The contestants enter the kitchen and Giada tells them they are officially at the mid-point of the competition. Bobby explains that their mid-term exam will consist of making a special personalized dish using potatoes. The dish needs to be something that can only be made by them. Each contestant will then have one minute to explain the dish on camera. Cory will make a roast pork lion with sweet potato hash and apples. Jason starts cooking uptown sweet potato with bourbon and bacon. Addie plans pac-man potatoes – red potatoes. Amy makes oven roast beef tenderloin with potatoes, arugula and a chimichurri dressing. Rusty makes purple potato cakes with bacon and tomato jam. David makes curried potatoes with seafood. Matthew makes a masked potato with cheddar cheese and roasted poblano peppers.
Cory is the first to present his dish and struggles. He gets nervous and looks down more than at the judges but his food tastes great. Amy shows a big improvement. Bobby and Giada both loved her presentation but her dish is not the best. Her sauce is overpowering. Rusty starts strong but finishes with 10 seconds left and stands there in silence. His dish is delicious which saves him. Both judges found Addie’s presentation low energy and boring but her food was great. Jason is his
Jason is his usually self with lots of one liners but seems a little stale and for the first time the judges don’t love his food. David talks so like about the potato and says delicious so often his presentation is not his best. His food tastes great but is more about the seafood than the potato. Matthew comes on too strong during his presentation and is almost abrasive. He can’t find a spoon so he uses his fingers to eat his mashed potatoes. Both Giada and Bobby are disgusted. Matthew thinks he did great and is taken aback with the negative feedback from the judges but his dish tastes very good.
The judges decide that since it is mid-terms the winner will be the chef who is most improved and Amy is declared the winner. She will have an advantage in the next challenge. Emily Silver who is the general manager of Lipton Ice Tea joins Bobby and Giada as a guest judge and explains the next challenge involves fun in the sun. Each contestant will be assigned a traditional summer gathering that they will host for a group of people.
The gatherings are a clam bake, a picnic in the park, Christmas in July, garden party, pool party, 4th of July and country boil. Amy gets to pick which gathering she wants and assigns each contestant to their gathering. She takes the picnic in the park and gives Matthew the pool party, Jason gets 4th of the July, David is clam bake, Addie is county boil, Cory is Christmas in July and Rusty gets garden party.
Rusty makes a vegetarian dish with hummus and tzatziki salad. If he has to host a garden party he is going to feed them things straight out of the garden. David makes clam bake chowder and a seafood fritter. Amy makes a cold lamb sandwich with goat cheese and chutney. Jason prepares a tomato and roasted corn salad with firecracker sauce and roasted fish. Matthew makes a scallop ceviche with a fried tortilla. Addie uses one pot to cook shellfish, potato, sausage and corn. This is something she has never made before. Cory plans a seafood gumbo for his Christmas in July. He is not thrilled with his assignment.
Each contestant is told they must incorporate Lipton Iced Tea into their dish. The contestants finsish cooking and head to the park to set up their parties. Tiffani Thiessen of Saved by the Bell joins Bobby and Giada at the parties to help with judging. Jason is the first to welcome his guests and is quite charming. He plates is beautiful and his food is wonderful. Matthew really listened to the judges advise and does a lot better in his presentation. His food is also very good.
Amy has a hard time talking about her dish and Giada tries to save her by asking questions. Her food is very good but her struggle to describe her food is not good this late in the game. Rusty is up next and goes a great job and his food is also great. The judges think he had the hardest topic and hit it out of the park. Addie has a hard time connecting with the judges and again shows little to no excitement but her food is very good as always. Cory was much more relaxed then earlier but his food is too heavy for the summer. David connects well with the judges but didn’t tell his personal story very well. His food is a little too heavy for summer.
Rusty and Jason both hit it out of the park and are safe for another week. The other five contestants are up for elimination. Each of the five contestants gets feedback from the judges and it is all things they have heard before. Cory is told he is safe followed by Amy. Addie is the loser of the week and is sent home.
