The season 7 finale of Game of Thrones was not light on foreshadowing Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) impending pregnancy to audiences, although the showrunners did set it up in a way that said pregnancy might actually come as a surprise to the characters during Season 8.
Multiple characters touched upon the theme of fertility during the finale, but the most obvious foreshadowing came on behalf of the probable baby daddy himself, Jon ‘Aegon Targaryen’ Snow (Kit Harington). When asked why she was so sure that she was infertile, Dany replied that the witch who murdered her husband was the one who told her.
Jon then replies that perhaps this witch was not the ‘most reliable source of information’, at which point any number of thoughts could be going through Dany’s head. Some people saw this as foreplay between the characters, others saw this as evidence that when Jon and Dany finally hooked up, that they were going to make a Targaryen baby to rule them all (the seven kingdoms, we mean).
And then there were those of us who were just grossed out that an aunt and her nephew were about to have sex without knowing that they were related, a fact that the show has driven home on numerous occasions.
Alas, the question of whether Daenerys Targaryen will get pregnant won’t be answered until Season 8, but why bring up both Jon’s and Dany’s child-bearing prospects so many times this season if the show wasn’t going to go that route? First, Jon was told that his sword could be passed on to his children, and then the line of succession was discussed between Dany and her hand, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), and then this very, VERY obvious bit of dialogue between the ‘wolf’ and the ‘dragon’ in the finale.
Of course, Bran’s little voiceover when Dany and Jon were doing the deed definitely reminded us that whether the pregnancy comes to pass or not, the little matter of Jon’s parentage and real name will probably provide a bigger rift between the duo than any baby would.
What do you guys think? Is it going to be revealed during Season 8 that Daenerys Targaryen is pregnant, and do you think the baby will actually end up being born? Or is it going to be another tragic repeat of Season 1, where her baby was stillborn (if it’s born at all)? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
