After getting publicly humiliated by Taylor Swift on numerous occasions, has Harry Styles finally gotten his revenge by writing his own songs about her? Music from Styles’ first solo album has been making waves on the Internet, and some reports are alleging that lyrics from his new songs and the titles have been hinting at his breakup with Taylor Swift and the aftermath. The song titles are: “Meet Me in the Hallway, Sign of the Times, Carolina, Two Ghosts, Sweet Creature, Only Angel, Kiwi, Ever Since New York, Woman, From the Dining Table.”
Fans on Twitter have been losing their minds over the ‘Ever Since New York’, pointing out Taylor Swift’s single, ‘Welcome to New York’. Are they reaching to make this comparison? Perhaps, and perhaps it’s just a coincidence. After all, New York City is popular with musicians and ever-present in song titles, and there are only so many variations of titles involving New York City that they can use.
But there’s also the fact that Harry Styles is very media savvy, and he had to have known that his song titles and album would be critiqued, scrutinized, and disseminated by the public. Every word would be analyzed and every intention questioned, and people would automatically start drawing parallels and comparisons to Taylor Swift. And knowing that, he still went ahead with calling one of his songs ‘Ever Since New York’, even though his whirlwind romance with Taylor took place mainly on the streets of New York City.
With all that in mind, it could easily be a pointed jab at Taylor Swift, although we’ll have to wait until the single – and its lyrics – are released before we are able to judge his intent behind the song. Will he take a lower-key and more melancholy approach to his relationship with Taylor Swift, or will he follow in her footsteps and make it a passive-aggressive re-telling of their breakup and the ensuing heartbreak? Somehow, it’s hard to imagine Harry Styles going down that route, but you never know.
