Sure, it seems silly for Katy Perry fans to be worried about the superstar’s career, after all she has been in the business for almost 10 years and has dozens of chart-topping hits.
But, some are actually concerned that her career has taken a downward spiral. It seems as though a lot of Perry’s music as well as other projects she has worked on have “flopped”. This has caused many of her fans to wonder if she is could still be considered the reigning princess of pop.
When Katy burst onto the scene with her hit single, “I Kissed a Girl”, she was immediately embraced by pop music. Her fun, quirky style earned her a legion of “Katy Kats”, the nickname for Katy’s fan base. But, it was her mega-hit album, “Teenage Dream” that she was catapulted to super- stardom. The album produced five #1 hits, tying her with Michael Jackson for the most #1 hits from the same album, and sold over 11 million copies.
It was after Katy released her next album, “Prism” that her career seemed to cool down. Sure, it would have been virtually impossible for Katy to top the success of “Teenage Dream”, but her follow-up, “Prism” spawned more flops than hits. Since then, it appears that most of Katy’s projects have disappointed fans.
Last summer, Perry released what was supposed to be a powerful anthem, “Rise” to be used as the song for the Summer Olympics, but it was barely played during the Olympics and despite initially debuting high on iTunes, the song failed to be a hit.
Her recent single, “Chained to the Rythm” hasn’t completely tanked, but Forbes asked if it was a “flop”, at least by Katy Perry standards. It’s not just her music that is failing to connect with her fans. In December 2015 Katy released a mobile game app that suffered disappointing sales and bad reviews.
Katy does have a chance at a comeback, she will soon be releasing “Bon Appetite” with Migos and teases that her next album will drop soon. So we will see if she has a hit on her hands, or if some of her fans are correct and she has lost her creative edge.
