Does Kate Middleton rule Prince William behind closed doors? That’s what actress Charlotte Riley is suggesting, as she believes that the Duchess of Cambridge is a force to be reckoned with. Charlotte, who plays Kate in the made-for-TV movie, ‘King Charles III’ says that the Duchess might be pulling all the strings behind closed doors at Kensington Palace.
According to The Guardian, Charlotte said that she believes Kate Middleton does rule Prince William and the rest of the royals behind closed doors. In fact, she even called her a powerhouse figure in the royal family.
The actress told the publication, “She’s just being pragmatic. She’s saying: ‘Come on, guys. It’s s**t that the only way I can connect with the public is by being a bloody clotheshorse, but if I have to do that for the monarchy to stay relevant, then so be it. Let’s suck it up. And I’m sorry, Charles, but we’re relevant and you’re not any more.’ I like to think she’s a powerhouse behind closed doors.”
There’s a good chance that a lot of royal observers might not agree with Charlotte’s comments. While there’s no doubting that Kate Middleton is the most popular if not influential member of the royal family right now, she’s not necessarily the most powerful one.
At the end of the day, her husband Prince William does what he wants, when he wants it. Kate certainly didn’t stop William from traveling to Africa to attend his ex-girlfriend Jecca Craig’s wedding in 2016 or from going on an all-mate ski trip to Switzerland. Kate Middleton might have objected to the trips, but it wasn’t enough to stop William from going.
Charlotte Riley also said that in order to get into character, she watched a lot of online videos and social media clips on Kate Middleton’s life. Through her observations, Charlotte says that Kate is the kind of person that knows she is being watched around the clock. And that’s why she’s so protective of her children and her personal life. But as far as who rules to roost in their marriage, only Prince William and Kate Middleton know the answer.
Of course, Buckingham Palace has not responded to Charlotte Riley’s comments and it’s doubtful that they will, too. In the meantime, ‘King Charles III’ airs on Sunday, May 14 on PBS. Also, don’t forget to check back with CDL for all the latest news and updates on the royal family right here!
