Katy Perry has finally confirmed that she will be the judge on the American Idol reboot. The singer has been stumbling on the music charts. That hasn’t stopped her from pushing her new album and tour and pursuing other interests. On Tuesday, May, 16, Katy tweeted that she wants to bring music back to the singing competition show.
This isn’t Katy Perry’s first time on American Idol. She served as guest judge on the original series in 2009 when it aired on Fox. She wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns like her pop persona. In fact, Katy Perry was rude to the contestants. She was so rude that she threatened to throw a coke in one person’s face. She also had a feud with former judge Kara DioGuardi. She was hailed as the female Simon Cowell when she was on. Imagine if Simon Cowell threatened someone. It wouldn’t end well.
However, in her statement, Perry said that she loves listening to new music and “discovering diamonds in the rough.” American Idol fans are wondering if Perry will be harsh to the contestants during the audition process. Perry allegedly acted like a diva behind the scenes and made demands. She was riding high off the success of her album, Teenage Dream. After all, she was on top of the charts. She had chart topper after chart topper. Perry was also married at the time to Russell Brand. She was at her musical prime.
That has all changed over the years. Katy is now single. She’s been through a public divorce and a string of high-profile relationships. She’s now stumbling around and trying to find her way in the changing music landscape. It seems like Katy can’t keep up with the changes in the music industry. She previously worked with Dr. Luke, but has now relied on Max Martin amid Kesha’s ongoing legal battle with the music producer.
Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked in her favor. Max Martin has produced hits for Britney Spears and Taylor Swift. That hasn’t been the case for Ms. Perry. She has received a lukewarm response to her new songs “Chained To the Rhythm” and “Bon Appetit.” They’re quite different from her chart-topping hits like “Roar” and “Rise.”
Does that mean Katy Perry will finally eat some humble pie? Not necessarily. During her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she noted that Idol is all about constructive criticism, which she claims to be good at. If being rude to contestants counts as offering constructive criticism.
