Midnight, Texas Season 1 Episode 3 ‘Lemuel Unchained’ Recap Part 1
The sun sets on Midnight, Texas as Creek (Sarah Ramos) and Manfred Bernardo (Francois Arnaud) dress after spending the day in bed. Creek says she needs to rush home for dinner, she can’t find her earring but needs to go. Manny asks if she is late for dinner will her father come after him with a shotgun and she says that is a possibility, telling him her father must never find out about them. He wants to walk her home but she says its not a full moon and there are no were-tigers on the loose and one over protective man in her life is plenty.
Creek is paying attention to a text from Manny when a stranger stops her, she says she has to be home in 3 minutes or people will come looking for her. Once she says she isn’t afraid of him he shows his fangs and asks if she is now; Lemuel (Peter Mensah) rushes to her aid but recognizes the man. Lem says Zack is an old friend, he says he isn’t looking for trouble, they were just looking for Lem insisting its been too long since they saw each other.
Olivia (Arielle Kebbel) meets Zack realizing he is a vampire. Lem explains they go way back but has never mentioned him before; Zack says they had a falling out that cost him his closest friend. He’s hoping him and Lem can put that bad blood behind them and Lemuel gives him the rules to Midnight of no feeding on Midnighters and locals are off limits. Zack shows him a pack of blood, saying he brings their meals to go and don’t kill humans anymore; Lem welcomes him to Midnight. When Zack leaves, Olivia learns they have to give Zack the benefit of the doubt because Lem owes him his life.
There is a flashback of when Lemuel is chained and whipped by a white farmer. He says he prefers to hang as this isn’t life. He breaks his chains and encourages another slave to run with him, but he leaves alone. Lemuel kneels down to the man (Zack) at the fire, who can offer him freedom but it will cost him. He says there is no turning back and draws out his fangs and bites Lemuel. Zack gives Lemuel his blood and turns him into a vampire.
Manny talks with Creek, Bobo (Dylan Bruce), Rev. Emilio Sheehan (Yul Vazquez) and Fiji (Parisa Fitz-Henley) about the nest of vampires arriving in Midnight. Bobo says things are getting weird around here after Aubrey, the Sheriff getting killed and the Rev getting out of the cellar, demons in Manny’s house and now the vampires.
Rev confirms that vampires usually avoid Midnight as Lemuel is an energy leeching vampire, he can kill vampires. Bobo says they need to keep their guard up even though Lem vouched for them and the Rev says if anything happens to meet at the church. Fiji says garlic, holy water and them needing to be invited inside are all lies. The only way to debilitate them is by silver but the only way to end their lives is by sunlight or wooden stakes through the heart.
Olivia and Lemuel join the nest of vampires in the bar; Pia (Odelya Halevi) rushes up to Lemuel and kisses him, she tells Lem she likes Olivia when she asks if she is an old friend. Olivia says they have a lot of catching up to do and she feels a migraine coming on. She tells Lem to have fun and she will see him later, when they are gone. She kisses him, telling Zack and Pia sarcastically she will see them in the morning.
Manny catches up with Olivia in the streets and asks if she trusts Lem’s friends. He tells her those vampires are up to something. He wants to go into the bus the nest of vampires live in but needs Olivia to be a look out while he does that. They both get on the bus, there are no vampires and he isn’t sensing any spirits as he walks to the back of the bus.
When he opens the back door, they find a human attached to all kinds of blood bags, she twitches and they realize she isn’t dead yet. Manny wants to get her out of there, she says she didn’t lose the blood, she gave it. She hitched a ride from Tulsa and is having a blast with the vamps.
Zack and Pia dance together until Pia drags Lemuel onto the dance floor, they just begin to dance when Olivia and Manny return telling Lem that they are draining a girl in the back of the bus. Pia gets angry that Olivia was snooping but Zack tells her its okay. Lemuel explains that Tiffany is a groupie and this is the most humane way to get blood, from a willing food supply; Pia says it would be hard to understand since she isn’t one of them. Lem knows Olivia hates them but tells her that he has been a vampire a long while and most of that time, Zack was by his side.
Back in time, when Zack turned Lemuel, they return to the farm where he was a slave and find the other slave hanging; they ride on horseback to the farmer’s house and he says he needed to make an example out of Abraham the slave as Lemuel cost him. Lem angrily tells him he owns him and savagely bites him; Zack tells the remaining guests that dinner isn’t over and Lem drains all of them.
Manny talks to his dead grandmother who warns him that all vampires are killers and while Lemuel is the only exception he should be wary that this nest is dangerous, as he is food to them. She asks if he is willing to bet his life on them changing? She says Midnight is safe but he might have to work to keep it that way.
Bobo rushes over to Fiji’s house; she is studying her books on Vampires and he brings her a crossbow so she can protect herself. Creek is busy making wooden stakes when her brother comes in and asks her what is going on; she tells him about the nest of vampires who are nothing like Lem. She tells him they shouldn’t be worried but be prepared.
Rev returns to the church and finds Joe Strong (Jason Lewis) in the church and assumes Joe is there for confession. Joe says the reason he hasn’t seen him there before is because he is a fallen angel, living the grounded life with someone he loves and its a life he wants to protect. He says the vampires are only the beginning of the threat. Rev says he will hear his confession and keep his secret.
Joe tells him the veil that Midnight sits upon is fraying and evil is being drawn there. Rev admits he felt it the last time he turned. Joe says there is no “we” and he may not be there much longer so someone needs to know the truth. There will come a time when Midnighters will have to make a choice to either leave or fight.
Manny is gathering tools when the power goes out in the store. He slips on the floor, covered in blood from the store keeper. A vampire jumps him, he stabs him but only with a pencil, he is told he needs to pierce the heart and he kicks the pencil into him and he turns to ashes.
Midnight, Texas Season 1 Episode 3 ‘Lemuel Unchained’ Recap Part 2
Manny rushes to the church and tells the Rev and Joe they killed the hardware store guy named Henry. They worry that anyone in town could be next and Rev says its time for mass. Fiji explains to Bobo they are safe as her house is not hospitable to the dead, that is why she never has Lemuel over for dinner. Bobo tells him they need to be ready, they need more than crossbows and stakes and tells her she is a witch and needs to get creative.
Manfred attempts to contact Creek, but her father turns off the phone. Lemuel and Olivia are drinking with Zack and Pia, who share how she became part of the family in 1898. Pia asks if Lem is going to turn Olivia but she quickly tells them she isn’t interested.
Zack asks for them to give him and Lem some time alone. Zack says its a cold world for their kind and must be nice that he can live freely there. Zack says she forgot how special Midnight was and the energy is more powerful than he remembers, he says Midnight is calling him and feels they belong there and asks Lemuel to let them stay.
Manny’s grandmother says there is something he needs to know, revealing back in the 1950s Zack and Pia brought Lemuel a gift to lift his spirits. The young girl follows Lemuel to go to the room, he tells her to close her eyes, it will hurt for a second and then it will feel good. He then says to himself that he is still a slave and cannot do this any more. He tells the young girl to wait until daylight and sneak down the back stairs and she will be fine; he even suggests joining her and putting an end to this. She tells him he doesn’t have to kill himself, as its never too late to change. She says she can put this curse behind him and says her name is Xylda (joanne Camp).
Lem returns to the bar and Zack asks if he enjoyed the girl; Lem’s eyes turn electric blue and Zack asks what she did to him. Zack says she saved him and in the present Zack says that gypsy girl made him turn his back on them and he made him have eternal life. He says if it wasn’t for Xylda, he would have ended his life and Zack is furious she gave him power of them. Lem says his family is Midnight now and they cannot stay.
Zack says they should not end the night this way and offers them to end the night with a drink; he pours blood into a shot glass, Zack says he will miss Lem and Lemuel chugs it down. Pia tells Olivia Zack is reminding Lem that blood is thicker than water; suddenly Lem drops to the floor. Olivia attacks Pia after she learns Lem drank blood laced with silver, she takes her spiked shoes and kills Pia. Zack says she is going to take Pia’s place and orders the nest to kill everyone.
Joe watches the church door, while Manny is looking for the others. Creek and her brother get a loud knock at the door and its Manfred who says he’s been calling. He tells them vampires are on attack, her father says he doesn’t need to listen to him so Manny punches him out, apologizing saying there is no time and they need to get somewhere safe now. Manfred takes them in the RV and runs over as many of the vampires as he can on his way to the church.
Manny can’t make it to the church so he brings Creek and her family to his house and the vampires cannot get in because of Fiji’s magic. At Fiji’s house she tells Bobo that she can use a quartz that can emulate UV light like sunlight, Bobo says he can make this work and she hugs him tightly until shattering glass distracts them. Olivia is there and says she can’t make it to the chapel, she reveals they have Lem who has been poisoned, completely defenseless until the silver leaves his body.
Lemuel wakes up chained to the floor, Zack says the sun will be up soon but not soon enough for the Midnighters. Lem says he should have killed him when he had the chance.
Lem remembers when Xylda saved him and he tells Zack and Pia they could live a life free of killing but they say they love the killing and the blood. Lem says there is nothing left to say and orders them to leave Midnight; Zack tells him to never forget that he made him and he could unmake him; when he tells his vampires to take care of Lemuel he kills them just by touching them. Zack wants what Lem has but he says he had his chance and tells him to leave before he ends him too.
Olivia gets into the pawn shop but before she can escape a vampire attacks her; she uses the light Bobo and Fiji made and he turns to ash. She calls Fiji and tells her she has been hurt; Bobo calls Manny and tells him Olivia can’t bring the light. Creek tells Manny they can’t just stand there and wait for them to die. Manny sees his grandmother in the RV and goes into his closet, planning to risk his life to save Lem but for it to work they need Divine intervention.
Creek’s father calls Manny an idiot and Creek defends him saying he is trying to save Lem. He is surrounded by the nest of vampires when he calls out to Zack revealing he is Xylda’s grandson and he will make him as powerful as Lem, demanding him to make a deal. Lem wants him to stop but Zack silences him. He tells Zack he wants them to leave Midnight for the power but when Zack refuses he says to let all the Midnighters leave, including Lem and he agrees.
Rev prays as Joe flies above the town and into the tower. Manfred gives Zack an empty box and just when he is about to attack him, Joe shines the light on the nest and everyone burns up and turns into ash, leaving Manny standing alone in the street. Olivia breaks into the room and attempts to break the chains but can’t. She breaks the window and slits her wrist, telling Lemuel to drink. His eyes turn blue and he rips the chains just as the sun rises. Olivia turns around and sees the sun shining in the spot Lem was chained.
The Rev opens the church doors and everyone leaves. Manny reveals Olivia got to Lemuel in time. He asks Joe how he got the light up there and lies saying he snuck into the tower, he thanks Manny for stepping up and saving everyone.
Lemuel says he never intended to taste her blood, she wasn’t about to let him die. She says she also has a dark past as they share an intimate moment in bed.
Fiji is outside cleaning up when Bobo comes to see her. He takes some debris out of her hair. She says the hug was an embarrassing moment as she gets emotional when she is scared. He says he feels comfortable with her too and she is his closest friend, the one he can always count on; she’s clearly disappointed.
Creek is making dinner when her father comes into the kitchen and asks if she has been sleeping with that psychic. She says she isn’t sleeping with him and to stop looking for trouble. He says Manfred is the definition of trouble and to stay away from him as he is going to lead her down the wrong path.
A woman is walking down the street when she hops into a truck asking to hitch a ride. When she closes the door, the driver is a vampire and attacks her 1 mile outside of Midnight, Texas.
