Tonight’s episode of Nashville kicks off with Rayna James being rushed into the emergency room on a stretcher, she was just in a high-speed automobile accident. Rayna was being escorted home by a police officer when another car slammed into the cop car. The doctors get to rush working on Rayna, she is bad shape.
Deacon is rushing to the hospital. He calls Maddie on her cell phone and tells her to have her boyfriend drive her to the hospital ASAP.
Scarlett has already slept with Damien, after breaking up with Gunnar literally a few hours ago. While Scarlett and Damien are lying in bed giggling, the phone begins ringing. Gunnar finally gets a hold of Scarlett, he tells her to pick Daphne up from school and bring her to the hospital.
At school, Daphne has stayed late for choir practice, totally oblivious to everything that is going on with her mother.
Deacon arrives at the hospital and the doctors fill him in. Rayna is banged up and in pretty bad shape, but she’s stable. They are prepping her for surgery. Deacon heads to Rayna’s room to check on her, she’s a bit groggy from the pain meds and her face is cut up and bruised, but she still manages to smile when she sees him.
At home, Juliette is researching bone infections on the internet. Her leg hurts and she’s convinced that something is wrong. Avery reassures her that she’s just being paranoid, but agrees to schedule a doctor appointment.
Maddie rushes into the hospital just to see her mom being rushed off to surgery. She heard about the stalker assault, and begins having a panic attack. She rushes out of her mom’s room and runs to the bathroom and throws up. Scarlett chases after Maddie to make sure she’s okay. Maddie blames herself for her mom’s accident, Scarlett gives her a pep talk.
Rayna’s surgery is going to be four hours long. Deacon and Daphne are pacing in the waiting room. Deacon wants Scarlett to take Daphne home, but she refuses.
Maddie leaves the hospital and gets back in Clay’s car. She says her mom is going to be in surgery for four hours and tells him to “just drive.”
In the morning, Rayna comes out of surgery – the doctors have nothing but good reports for Deacon and the family. Bucky stops by, all Rayna will talk about is a song that she wants to write with Deacon ASAP. Rayna notices that Maddie is missing. Deacon is certain she will be there soon. Meanwhile, Maddie and Clay are going for a walk, Maddie takes him to the top of the bridge where Deacon proposed to Rayna. She remembers when her mom used to take her to the same bridge when she was little.
Scarlett runs to Deacon’s house to get some stuff for Daphne, Gunnar tags along and demands to know if she slept with Damien. He snarks that she didn’t have to spend the whole day in bed with him, there’s no way that Damien is “that good.”
Juliette heads to the hospital to check on Rayna, she barges past the nurses’ station on her crutches, even though Rayna isn’t supposed to have any visitors. Rayna is thrilled to see Juliette, she says that she has changed, and when Juliette fell out of the sky, something shook out of her.
Maddie heads back to Clay’s house with him, Maddie rants about how guilty she feels about her mom. She has lied, ran away, and even took her parents to court and Rayna never turned her back on her.
Daphne is supposed to have a concert at school and a solo, but she won’t go. Scarlett tries to talk to Daphne in the waiting room, and convince her to go to her concert. Daphne cries that there’s no point, no one will go watch her. Maddie doesn’t even care about her, she’s always with Clay. Scarlett texts Maddie and let’s her know that Daphne is having a meltdown.
Juliette and Avery head to her doctor’s appointment. The doctor orders a MRI to check on her leg. Now, Juliette is convinced that she may have cancer. The doctor tries to explain that it could all be psychological.
Rayna is high as a kite on her pain meds, and insisting on writing a song with Deacon. Deacon catches Rayna talking to herself, apparently Rayna sees her mom in the corner of her hospital room ad is having conversations with her about the song. Deacon is a little alarmed seeing as how Rayna’s mom has been dead since she was a little girl. Deacon shares his concerns with the doctor, but they reassure him that Rayna didn’t have any damage to her head.
Daphne gets a surprise at the hospital, since she didn’t go to her concert, her crush Flynn and the entire choir came to the hospital so that they could sing for Daphne’s parents and families. There’s not a dry eye in the place as Daphne and her choir file in to Rayna’s room and serenades her mom. Suddenly, Rayna’s eyes start rolling in the back of her head and the doctors begin rushing in to her hospital room. Deacon rushes all of the kids out of Rayna’s room, Daphne’s clearly traumatized.
Maddie and Clay are stuck in a traffic jam when Maddie gets a text from Deacon saying that something is wrong with Rayna and she has been rushed to ICU. Maddie gets out of the car and begins running down the sidewalk towards the hospital.
Deacon chases after the doctors as they wheel Rayna away on a stretcher. The doctor says that Rayna’s kidneys are shutting down, she has a broken pelvis, and it is leaking fluid through her body and wreaking havoc. The doctors pull Deacon away and won’t let him go in to ICU with Rayna.
Meanwhile, Maddie is still running down the street and has not made it to the hospital yet. The doctors leave Rayna in the ICU and Deacon sneaks in to her room. Rayna is having trouble breathing and is very confused. She tells Deacon that if something happens to her, he has to stay strong and take care of the girls. Deacon promises he will take girl of the girls as the doctors make him leave the ICU again.
Juliette and Avery sit down with the doctor to go over her MRI, everything is perfectly fine, Juliette doesn’t have an infection or cancer. Juliette is thrilled, until a nurse rushes in and says that the doctor is needed in the ICU, because Rayna is crashing. Juliette is in such a hurry to get to Rayna, she rushes down the hallway without her crutches.
In Rayna’s room, the doctors give Deacon and Daphne bad news – Rayna is on life-support, and her organs are shutting down, there’s nothing more the doctors can do. Maddie finally arrives, and is devastated to see the state that her mother is in. Daphne, Deacon, and Maddie hold vigil at unconscious Rayna’s bed while she’s hooked up to the machines. The three of them choke back tears as they sing to Rayna. Suddenly, Rayna’s eyes begin fluttering, she looks at her kids and Deacon, and then closes her eyes and the machines begin beeping. The doctors rush in as Rayna flatlines and dies.
THE END!
