Prince Charles wrote Nancy Reagan letters about his split from Princess Diana. But, these weren’t your typical letters that expressed heartbreak and sorrow. Nope. They were letters filled with anger and resentment, according to a new report via the Daily Mail on Sunday, June 4. The letters have surfaced 20 years later after Diana’s death and after the former First Lady died last year.
Prince Charles wrote a letter to Nancy Reagan on June 21, 1992, which happened before his split to Diana. In the letter, Charles explained his anguish with being married to the people’s princess. He remarked that their marriage was only “getting worse and worse.” He promised Nancy Reagan that he will share his story someday. It compares his to marriage to Diana as a “Greek tragedy” and he thinks it would make a “good play.” I’m sure we agree as well!
It’s a stark contrast to an earlier letter where Charles seemed deeply in love with Diana. He complimented her iconic look on the White House dance floor in 1995, when Ronald Reagan became President.
This comes as a shock to those who didn’t know that Prince Charles was good friends with Nancy Reagan, the wife of the late former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. The two first met while Reagan was the governor of California. The two carried on their friendship by writing letters back and forth to each other. Prince Charles wrote to the Reagans in a friendship that last well over forty years, ending with Nancy Reagan’s death at the age of 94 in 2016.
The letters were revealed as part of Nancy’s private collection which was given to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library in Simi Valley, California shortly after her death. The letters used to be stored away in boxes that were locked away at secret warehouses throughout the Los Angeles area and were never been revealed until now. The letters have been made public in part of late President and his wife’s agreement that their papers were in the historical archive, according to the British newspaper.
The Daily mail reported that Prince Charles often wrote to Nancy Reagan about his marriage to Diana. They looked like quite the royal couple in public, but there was a lot of anger and resentment behind closed doors. He even lamented that their marriage was “so awful,” but no one believed him. He also showed his support for Nancy Reagan during her reign as former First Lady.
He even wrote to her over the death of his Queen Mother. Prince Charles also worried about being criticized on his tenth wedding anniversary. He was worried about the books that were coming out about their royal wedding and his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.
Prince Charles and Diana were divorced in 1996. Fans around the world were distraught when Diana died in a car accident the following year in Paris. Various 20-year anniversary specials about her death have popped up on television. Check back with CDL for more royals news and updates right here.
