The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple recently talked about the similarities between Rick Grimes and Negan. Before, you say anything – listen to this. Both men are strong characters on the show. They both want to be leaders. Rick Grimes has been a leader since the beginning of the series. Negan obviously has his own following with the Saviors. The Walking Dead has taken a dark turn and it will continue to get darker, assures Scott Gimple.
Fans have been frustrated with the AMC show. Negan has taken front and center. He has taken lives as well. Fans are still mourning the deaths of Glenn Rhee and Abraham Ford. The Walking Dead has portrayed Rick Grimes as the hero of the story. He’s outlasted most of the people on the show. It doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere anytime soon. And he’s not giving up without a fight. One of the executive producers on the show believes there isn’t much of a difference Rick and Negan.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Scott M. Gimple said that Andrew Lincoln’s character has made some offkey decisions on the show. What differentiates Rick from Negan is their “philosophies” on how they handle things. He said if fans got to know Negan’s backstory, then they would notice that he survived the apocalypse the same way that Rick did. Of course, the way that Negan got to where is why is just from behaving like a villain. Meanwhile, Rick believes that everything he’s done up until now is “justified,” according to Gimple.
Both characters have obviously changed in the new world. The world has made them the way they are. What Negan has done, however, was threaten people to get a reaction out of them and to make sure he survives. Things will continue to get darker on the show, assures Gimple. The things that Rick has done to survive cannot hold up to what Negan has done. And that’s what separates the two characters. But, the way that they handle things is very similar, says Gimple.
It’s just their “philosophies” that stand them apart, one is the “hero” and the other is the “villain” of the show. Of course, Negan is not the only villain who has graced the show. But, he is the latest one and it looks like he’ll be on for a little while. Things will continue to get dark in Season 8 of The Walking Dead when Rick takes on Negan and his crew. It looks like there will still be a war among Alexandria, the Hilltop, and the Kingdom against the Saviors and the Scavengers.
