The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that Adam Newman is going to play a major role during May Sweeps. Victor’s son and his fate still command more attention than any other storyline currently on offer on the CBS top-rated soap. In this context Michael Muhney’s (Adam Newman) desire to return to Y&R in the role of Adam hasn’t abated and isn’t likely to anytime soon.
On April 28 Michael Muhney replied to one of his 103,000-plus Twitter followers who asked, “Michael…how do we let Y&R know that we need you back…” Muhney’s reply, which included the Twitter profile names of top executives at Y&R, CBS, and Sony, encouraged fans to contact those individuals regarding his return to the cast.
Easily one of the most referenced soap opera stories in many years, Muhney’s unexpected release from The Young and the Restless in December 2013, set fans and others within the industry reeling. The mysterious reason(s) behind why then executive producer Jill Farren Phelps let Muhney go, combined with his top-shelf status on broadcast network television’s number 1 soap opera, created a visceral and enduring reaction among Y&R fans and other observers.
Because full details weren’t offered, the Wild West world of social media took over. A digital cottage industry of Kennedy-esque style conspiracy theories emerged that included everything from Muhney’s on- and off-screen behavior, to Hunter King’s (Summer Newman) anatomy. The topic became Genoa City’s grassy knoll. There were even unfounded rumors that Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) got Michael Muhney fired.
The supposed passion many anonymous Internet users claimed to have on both sides of the issue seemed preposterous from the jump and then deepened as the months passed. Muhney’s advisement in the summer of 2014 that he was under consideration to return to the cast, coupled with Y&R’s lack of denial, ended all irrational fodder that had been spit about Muhney and King, neither of whom deserved the arguable slander each faced.
Public access to modern technology has naturally brought with it pluses, minuses and neutralizers. The attacks against Muhney may have impacted his attempts to rejoin the Y&R cast in 2014, or his subsequent attempts to do so since.
Fingers will pound smartphones across the globe when TPTB at The Young and the Restless decide it’s time to resurrect Adam with any actor. If that actor is Muhney, a ratings’ bonanza seems likely to be earned.
There’s no doubt that Muhney’s electric performances and smart social media presence would allow his fan base to bask in a victory they clearly would have enabled. Many in the genre and possibly, the entertainment industry itself, surely have studied the effect Muhney’s removal from Y&R had on the show and the public’s perception of it. All involved parties will also certainly be interested to see the results if this long-awaited reunion ever takes place.
During May sweeps Adam Newman’s alleged death is being dealt with on The Young and the Restless with Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson) and Victor taking center stage on this week’s new Y&R episodes (May 1 – May 5). Some Y&R buzz suggests that without at least an indication that somehow Adam survived the blast and is alive both Chloe and Victor remain irredeemable. In fact a recent poll conducted by CDL showed that approximately 90% of thousands of respondents agreed that without Adam alive Victor Newman can NOT be redeemed
The Young and the Restless Nation awaits word of Adam’s return – a sign of life! Given that Justin Hartley has become a Hollywood superstar and remains unavailable, fans think Michael Muhney would be an excellent and popular choice to play the role.
