The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that Michael Muhney (who formerly played Adam Newman, 2009-2014) is still hoping to return to Y&R. This week, in replying to a tweet, he praised Eric Braeden (Victor Newman). “…Proof that Eric Braeden was the single greatest acting partner I’ve ever had, he always elevated my performances,” Muhney said.
Public perception, as confirmed by Muhney himself after his termination in December 2013, was that Braeden didn’t see eye-to-eye with his on-screen son. Fans then went wild, choosing to devour every possible rumor about why Muhney was let go by Y&R. Others created provably false narratives (a fancy phrase for lies) about this actor, some of his cast mates and other off-screen decision-makers.
Muhney has smartly maintained significant social media engagement since the spring of 2014. His strategy was to remain connected with his fans and yes, to stay relevant. Michael Muhney’s efforts haven’t resulted in many paid acting jobs, which implies (if not confirms) that he’s suffered a form of blacklisting.
To praise Braeden could be interpreted as Muhney hoping that the veteran Y&R actor replies, or offers some positive comment about him. To-date no digital compliment has been offered by that actor. What’s not debatable is whether Muhney’s hire would set the soap opera audience on fire. It would. However, life isn’t that simple in Hollywoodland.
Is it actually true that the current The Young and the Restless regime, headed by executive producer Mal Young and co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman, agrees with former executive producer Jill Farren Phelps? Or is that duo simply following whatever directive the parent company’s head honchos put in place?
That’s the rub. Theories remain just that, unless they are publicly confirmed as fact by more than one source. That opening forces the public to piece together an explanation when one hasn’t been fully offered, as is true in this instance.
Yes, Phelps implied that there was trouble behind the scenes and Muhney admitted that he was far too aggressive on the job. But seemingly concocted rumors about what he did to another cast member, combined with apparently real verbal bouts that took place with Braeden and others make it appear as though Muhney’s ineligible for rehire.
Until another actor is cast to play Adam it will remain possible for Muhney to return. The actor in question has stated his willingness to do just that via social media. That’s why all Y&R fans, along with soap opera devotees in general will remain curious.
Daytime drama is famous for stretching its storylines beyond the bounds of reason. But life is often stranger than fiction, as proven by Muhney’s three-plus year quest to regain his cast slot at Y&R. This time that point is apparently further evidenced by his praise of Braeden. More answers than questions, just like soap itself.
