The Young and the Restless spoilers documented Jill’s (Jess Walton) latest fallout with Colin (Tristan Rogers). Included with those high jinks were new scenes (yes new) with the late Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper). Y&R’s respectful rendering offered a gift to longtime fans and a refresher to newer viewers.
After being kicked out of the Chancellor mansion, Colin found a key inside the discarded music box that Jill originally received after Katherine’s death. It was linked to an illustration of the Duchess. Jill never discovered the secret compartment that was located inside the box, but Colin did. Inside was a key that matched to a lock box, which contained a sealed enveloped addressed to Jill, along with an emerald ring surrounded by diamonds.
Savvy viewers thought at the time (circa 2013, when Cooper passed away and Katherine died) that the Grand Dame’s sendoff was somewhat convoluted. Sally Sussman has wisely clarified Y&R’s record by having her team create a post script ending in 2017.
Colin used a contact to fence the ring. He plans to use that money to buy back Jill’s love. In the meantime he placed the letter in the mansion’s mailbox.
Esther screamed when she saw Mrs. C’s handwriting on an envelope that merely had Jill’s name scrawled on it. Mrs. Atkinson took the envelope, questioned how it could possibly have been delivered and opened it.
Terrifically done faux flashback scenes appeared to show an actor who was dressed as Katherine writing the letter to Jill four years ago. The scene was set in a corner of the living room, showing Katherine from behind and at a distance. Plot points confirm that the letter was written prior to Patrick Murphy (Michael Fairman) and Katherine departing on the fated trip around the world.
It was great to see Fairman again, as he scored strongly in the role of Cooper’s final on-screen husband. Esther (Kate Linder) welcomed Murphy to his former home, after which he filled in Jill on what she’d missed between the lines of Katherine’s cryptic letter.
Yes, Jill read and appreciated Katherine’s acknowledgment that Phillip (Donnelly Rhodes) truly loved her and that she did as well. Kay, Phillip’s pet name for his wife, also advised Jill to not question life and to find peace in her later years.
However, Esther’s call to Murphy surely sets up Colin for a potential fall. It would seem hard to believe that someone as shrewd as Jill wouldn’t figure out the scam her husband is attempting to pull. Suddenly he comes into money, while at the same time Katherine’s letter is discovered?
Surely Jill will notice that the music box, that was inadvertently removed from the mansion by Billy (Jason Thompson) and Esther, is missing. She’ll put two and two together and then let Colin have it. Katherine must be hoping that’s how it all works out as she watches from above.
