The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Noah’s (Robert Adamson) chiding of Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) telegraphs the coming split between these characters. While the gun issue that Noah referenced will be resolved, he and Tessa will grow apart in the near future in order to set up a different storyline.
Mariah (Camryn Grimes) came to terms with her feelings about Tessa and told that character the truth. As Y&R fans took note, Grimes’ character didn’t tell Sharon (Sharon Case) that she was attracted to all females, but just to Tessa. That interesting plot point left the audience wondering if Mariah was actually being transitioned to a homosexual character, a bisexual character or neither.
One as yet unresolved point within this proposed arc is whether Mariah’s childhood somehow served to repress her true sexuality? Living under the control of Ian Ward (Ray Wise) would damage anyone’s mind. How it would affect someone’s sense of self in all areas is unknowable.
Mariah continues to be conflicted because she and her half-brother (through Sharon) love the same woman. Noah would face a double reaction; Learning about his sister’s sexuality and her interest in the person he’d like to spend the rest of his life with, potentially.
Tessa also told Mariah, when pressed, that she was making a choice to stay with Noah right now. That obviously implied that if Nessa didn’t exist that Mariah and Tessa could be together, which also suggested that Tessa could be bisexual.
Sexuality identity issues are hot topics in the real world. So it makes sense that Y&R would address this complex matter through a main storyline. It’s choice of Grimes to lead the way is bold, as her original character (Cassie) was beloved by the audience.
Mariah recently voluntarily ended her relationship with Devon (Bryton James). It would seem that at some point in the future she’ll tell him the main reason why Mevon wasn’t going to work. He’d likely support someone who he rightly considers to be a friend.
Grimes has successfully created a secondary alter ego that is separate from Cassie. In so doing she further endeared herself to hardcore Y&R fans and newer viewers as well.
Y&R seems not to have axed this opportunity, but rather delayed it. It’s smart to carefully craft a respectful storyline that allows all audience members to clearly see the depth of this matter as evidenced by characters who are well-liked and played by actors who are up to the task. Grimes, Adamson and Fairbanks are that.
