The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Devon (Bryton James) will become the father he recently hoped to be. Fans know that this unexpected blessing from God will come after Hevon’s seeming dissolution. Hilary (Mishael Morgan) currently believes all is lost, but future morning sickness will prove to be a gift that causes everyone to rethink everything.
Oh, this baby won’t make Devon fall back in love with Hilary. Instead, he’ll kick himself for every having been with his perceived soul mate. But those feelings will fade. Hilary will have followed through on her promise to not contest the divorce and she’ll also not have asked for anything by the time she tells Devon that he’s going to be a dad. Through he’ll initially respond by telling the ex-Mrs. Hamilton that he wants a DNA test.
Y&R fans, along with devotees of other soap operas, lost faith in the scientific methods used by so-called medical professionals years ago. So yes, it will be possible that the requested test result confirms Devon as the father, but somehow isn’t true. That wouldn’t be the first time that Hilary lied, as she herself said on one of this week’s episodes.
It was interesting to hear Hilary admit to Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) that she was shocked to learn that Devon wanted a baby and for her to admit, possibly to herself, that she also wanted to become a mother.
Morgan’s evolution as an actor has been impressive. An obvious talent from her debut scenes in 2013, she’s since skillfully mastered the art of sustaining a villainess who’s nonetheless likable. Yes, there are hardcore Hilary detractors who believe that she’s a schemer. But that contingent actually proves that some fans recognize people from their real lives (or themselves, wink), as evidenced through Morgan’s consistently sharp performances.
James’ efforts must also be highlighted whenever Hevon is referenced. Here’s a still-young man who was born in 1986 and joined the cast in 2004. The growth he’s shown and the respect he’s gained from all savvy viewers since is unquestioned. The work he’s done with Morgan arguably represents the best of his Y&R career, as it’s allowed him to elicit strong sympathy from the audience through his character’s nuanced vulnerability.
Yes, a new platform is about to emerge. Neil’s (Kristoff St. John’s) marital experience with Hilary will be broadly overtaken by Devon’s now far deeper connection to the original Ann Turner. Lily’s (Christel Khalil) protective instincts will be neutralized by concerns for her nephew, or niece.
As for the main players in this previously quixotic relationship, both Hilary and Devon will need to put the interests of their child above whatever mixed feelings they hold for each other. And if that reality is realized anything then becomes possible, even remarriage.
