Fans are excited about the Will & Grace revival. Now it’s time to discuss Debra Messing’s character Grace Adler. On the series, she played an interior designer who lived with lawyer Will Truman (Eric McCormack), aspiring actor Jack McFarland (Sean Hayes), and socialite Karen Walker (Megan Mullaly).
Grace was obsessed with men. She had countless fiancés and boyfriends on the show. However, the real Debra Messing is not what you see on the small screen, but she somehow made it work. She’s far from the hopeless romantic she played on series for eight seasons. At least, she sure doesn’t act like it even if she’s single.
She met actor and screenwriter Daniel Zelman in 1990. The two later married in September 2000. She gave birth to their son, Roman Walker Zelman, on April 7, 2004. Then, in December 2011, Messing and her husband separated after eleven years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized on March 1, 2016.
Debra was not entirely cool with playing Grace at first. Alcohol was what led her to the decision to play the character. The show’s creators, Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, wanted Debra on board so bad that they brought a bottle of vodka to her house and pitched her ideas about the show, she revealed in an interview with the Daily News. However, it didn’t turn out as planned since Debra admitted she’s a lightweight when she drinks. She was tipsy enough to say yes and luckily it worked out in her favor.
It’s obvious that Debra Messing was the perfect actress to play Grace Adler. She’s smart, funny, and bubbly to boot. Her laugh is infectious. Some hailed her as the next Lucille Ball during the time of the series. She also received plenty of acclaim for her work on The Starter Wife, Smash, and The Mysteries of Laura. But it will also be Will & Grace that fans recognize her for.
She teased that the return of Will & Grace to NBC this fall will fit right in with today’s political climate. It’s a show that’s important now as it was then. Will & Grace originally premiered in 1998, a year after Ellen DeGeneres came out on national TV. Messing said she “never imagined” the show would return, but she believes the show needs their characters more than ever. It will show bring plenty of laughs in these turbulent times.
