Chicago Fire begins tonight with Captain Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) waking up just after 2 am, to an empty bed. He finds Gabi Dawson (Monica Raymund) looking on the computer, but Bria (Quinn Cooke) hasn’t posted in days. He encourages her to get some sleep, but Gabi says the social worker said Bria didn’t have any relatives but there was an Aunt Melinda on her FB. Gabi wants Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) to cover for her tomorrow so she can keep working it, Matt isn’t pleased but agrees and goes back to bed.
Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) is surprised to see Stella working EMS instead of a truck; but Herrmann says Gabi sometimes gets too passionate about her job. Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) arrives at the firehouse and asks Brian “Otis” Zvonecek (Yuri Sardarov) and Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) if they smell that, as it smells “ripe”. Randall “Mouch” McHolland (Christian Stolte) says that female’s nostrils hold more scent receptors than males, as Otis blames the smell of Capp’s (Randy Flagler) gym bag. They are interrupted by the alarm and all crews are off to a call.
Truck 81 and Squad 3 arrive at a building where a woman’s foot is caught in a door, turnstile. A man is also caught in the doors and is pushing on the door telling them to hurry up as he has a meeting; Matt tells him if he pushes the door again, they will leave him in there all day. Once they cut the metal, Lt. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) carry her to the gurney and the man demands to be let out. Matt turns to him and tells him they will let him out once they sweep up the glass, when he shouts as Matt, he hits the wood in further to force the doors closed tighter and walks away.
A homeless kid calls Severide over, saying he knows Bria, saying he went to school with her. He tells them where she hangs out, saying he didn’t tell them last night because they looked like cops. Kelly gives him some money and he takes off; Matt sees the exchange and confronts him about going to skidrow with Gabi. Severide figures Gabi didn’t tell him because he worries about her getting too close to victims.
Once back at the firehouse, all the men can smell the stench. Otis thinks its another shift trying to mess with them. Matt orders them to go through their stuff until they locate the source of the smell. Gabi calls Severide, informing him about going to find this Melinda on Bria’s facebook; he tells her that Matt is worried about her and she promises to catch him up.
Severide runs into Matt in the hallway and tells him that Gabi went to Juliet to check out an aunt she found on Bria’s facebook. Severide said he isn’t getting involved, just trying to find this girl and asks if he can take the Squad by that store where the girl supposedly hangs out. As Severide walks towards a group of kids, they scatter when he says he wants to talk to them; one pauses when he says its about a girl named Bria.
He finds a cell phone on the ground and takes it with him as he returns to the truck, and the girl returns, telling him to give her the phone back as its hers. She tells him, Bria went to see her dad who is locked up at a mandatory rehab facility, and never came back from that visit. She asks if he finds her to tell her that they are all worried about her.
Otis, Herrmann and Mouch begin to drag the beds out of the room determined to find the source of the smell in the bunk room; Otis swears it is black mold. Matt asks Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) if he can use his office to complete his paperwork. Boden tells him that maybe he should give him the blue office since he is now Captain, but again the alarm goes off and the crews are called out.
Stella and Sylvie are really enjoying working together, sharing tips on how to make things easier and quicker. A young girl answers the door, saying it’s her mom who is in the basement; they worry that it is carbon monoxide and say to hold their breath and get her in and out in 20 seconds, but while down there, Stella notices chlorine and ammonia in a bucket together with steam coming out of it, they rush back upstairs. Stella seals the basement door and calls Haz-Mat, as Sylvie helps the mother.
When they leave the house, Stella explains to the mother that she can’t mix chlorine and ammonia, as it creates a toxic gas, she had no idea as she was just trying to clean the floor. Zach (Daniel di Tomasso) from the Haz-Mat team assures them everything will clear out in a couple hours and both Stella and Sylvie keep staring at him, thinking he is gorgeous.
Mouch thinks that the smell could be a main-line plumbing problem in the firehouse. He asks for the toolbox from Truck 81. Matt sees the boxes of everyone’s stuff on the table and finds Gabi’s, with a photo of him, Gabi and Louis, he stops and stares at it.
Severide and Cruz arrive at the rehab clinic, where Cruz knows the receptionist; he asks to see a patient and she gives him the paperwork and access. He is escorted to Mr. Jamison’s room. He says he is Gabi’s co-worker and asks about Bria, revealing she is missing. He becomes agitated, asking Warren if Bria came to see him, beating himself up, saying he messed up and she is paying for it. He wants Bria to know that none of this is her fault, Severide says she doesn’t hate him and she did come to visit him. Bria had written on his window “I love you Dad. Bria” Severide encourages him to get clear and they will make sure to have her there when he walks out.
Gabi arrives at the address she found for Melinda and knocks at the door; she tries to look through the windows but no one responds. When she walks away, someone opens the door and she asks if she is Melinda Tripp. The woman tells her to leave Bria alone and that Bria is better off alone and living on the streets. She won’t end up like her mother. Gabi sees that Melinda is a druggie too but learns that Bria’s mother killed herself. Gabi pleads with her, saying Bria is alone and scared to death.
Gabi talks to Severide, saying she found Bria’s aunt and understands why she wasn’t listed as a guardian because she is “off.” She reveals that Bria’s sister was driven to suicide by Bria’s dad, but he says that Bria was there and loves her dad. He tells her to drive safe.
Mouch has torn the walls out, saying you got your main line and then you water line; one goes to the sinks and one from the toilets. Herrmann tells him to make sure he has the right ones and Mouch assures him he has and they are good to go. He replaced the seals, flushed the pipes but Herrmann looks on the floor wondering what all the extra pieces are for; Mouch shrugs.
They return to the bunk room asking Otis if the smell is gone but he has cotton ball sup his nose and says he has no idea. Stella and Sylvie walked in saying it still smells. Boden walks in, wanting to know why there are greasy gaskets in his hallways and Herrmann reveals Mouch wanted to flush out the sewer line. Boden wants to know who was the whistleblower who called HQ saying maybe they had black mold at Firehouse 51. Sylvie and Stella suggest they call Zach from Haz-Mat as a favor to rule out the smell, he agrees.
Sylvie calls him and he agrees to come over but as soon as she hangs up, Stella says as soon as he gets there she is asking him out; but Sylvie says she was going to ask him. Stella says she calls “dibs!” They disagree on who he was checking out on the call, and both saying they desperately need this – Stella because Severide has stuck her permanently in the friend zone and Sylvie because she broke up with Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) again. They challenge each other.
Matt listens to Gabi’s message repeatedly, apologizing for being so distant lately. He walks over to Boden and says he needs to talk to him. He says he prefers to stay in his old quarters because he has been distant lately and wants to stay close to his men. Boden admits he is a bit jealous because sometimes he really misses being bothered. Matt jokes about sending Mouch to sleep on the couch if he misses it that much.
Zach arrives and Sylvie and Stella rush to greet him. Herrmann says they have a mystery odor that for once isn’t coming from Otis. Zach brings out one of his toys that is used to identify dead bodies in the rubble, as he approaches Otis the detector sounds louder and louder. He finds the that the smell is inside the divider and chisels into it, where he pulls out a the blue collar and a bell on it; Herrmann says they found the smell.
Zach carries the hazardous bag, saying he will dispose of the bag on his way out. Herrmann says he may have to come back and dispose of two more bodies stuffed into the walls. Cruz confesses that Mr. Sprinkles got away and they didn’t want to break his son’s heart. Matt comes out and calls Truck 81 for a meeting, Sylvie talks to Zach about Stella and says she is fantastic. He asks for her number and gives it to him.
Matt tells the crew to get all the bunks back, the wall covered until they can get it repaired. He wants the closet in the hall cleaned up and looking the way it was when the shift started. Matt sits back in his office, enjoying the hustle and bustle of his crew, even opens his door a little to hear them.
At Molly’s Otis tells the guys that Lily was so nice to do a fitting tribute for their wall of fame. It is a picture of Mr Sprinkles and Herrmann doesn’t find it funny, saying the animal died because of them, calling them “nitwits”. Otis says he sacrificed himself, for the greater good; because of the call to HQ, they have approved new mattresses for all the bunks. Herrmann grabs a pitcher and puts it on the counter, ordering them all to put $200 in it, donating it for the Chicago Humane Society, or they are never drinking at Molly’s again.
Stella tells Sylvie that she just got a call from Zach and they are going on a date tomorrow night. Sylvie says that is great because he sounds terrific. Stella is mad, feeling Sylvie felt sorry for her and told him to ask her out; Sylvie says he asked for her number and she simply said she was fantastic. They hug and Stella says she was the best.
Gabi tells Severide about talking to Antonio about Bria’s aunt. Bria was only 6 when her mom shot herself, and her aunt is severely mentally ill. Gabi’s phone rings as Matt sits there, not saying anything. Gabi gets a call, and she asks them to describe her, she hangs up and tells Matt it was the morgue. A Jane Doe teenage girl just rolled in, and she had Gabi’s card in her purse. Severide gets up to take her but Matt tells him that he will take her.
