How to Get Away With Murder (HTGAWM) begins tonight with Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) entering his class, informing them that today they are doing a form of “autopsy”, reviewing where she went wrong during trial of proving Nate Lahey Sr (Glynn Turman) was insane at the time of the murder of Gerald Rinehoff. Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee) is more than willing to state all her faults.

Annalise informs Sr and Nate Lahey (Billy Brown) that she has chosen to have a jury trial as he is a likeable guy. Nate wants to know how Bonnie Winterbottom (Liza Weil) is, but she is to be as expected. Annalise comes home to find Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber) sleeping and Bonnie’s bed empty and her window wide open.

Nate tells Bonnie he never wanted anything bad to happen, only wanted the best for Bonnie; but she begs to differ. She feels he ripped the part of her life open that killed to get past and now she is left with what he did. She has nothing left to say to him as Annalise and Frank worry to death about her. She comes home, revealing she went to Nate’s; promising she won’t do anything stupid. Frank says he will hide all her razor blades.

Gabriel Maddox (Rome Flynn) calls with a new name on the witness list – Nate Lahey Jr. Nate is questioned about his father and although they had a very hostile relationship, Nate denies there was any violence at home. Connor argues with Gabriel, saying the whole point of this exercise is to point out where Gabe and Annalise went wrong; she points out this is law school, not daycare! Sr. and Jr. are fighting that he lost his mind over that letter and he spent all that time in the shoe because of Nate’s letter. He doesn’t want to see his son’s face ever again. Annalise says he better want to see his face again or he is the bastard who turned on his own kid.

Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza) says Annalise lost this round because she didn’t see the letter coming because she was too close to the witness. Gabriel feels the blame is on the guy who wrote the letter, while Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King) says they all did stupid things when they were 14; but Gabriel wonders what kind of guy turns his back on his people. Michaela leaves to meet with Asher Millstone (Matt McGorry) agreeing to meet with him after work at his place; he’s worried about Bonnie who hasn’t been to work in a few days.

DA Ronald Miller (John Hensley) comes to see Bonnie, wondering if he freaked her out by the HR forms and if so, to forget about them. Frank says he will pass on the message and talks to Bonnie about everything. He tells her to consider all her options and how happy she has been, way more than he has ever seen. He will support her in whatever she decides, leaving her to wallow in her tears.

Annalise tells Nate to pour himself a stiff drink because at least they have the psych expert on their side. Nate remembers writing the letter and after seeing his dad in cuffs a few times, he was beginning to see the cops as the good guys. Annalise says she would never drag their asses to Philly if she wasn’t sure they would win.

Michaela arrives at Asher’s place, telling him she needs his help with their case to discredit Dr. Charmagne. She understands that he thinks she is a heartless bitch, asking him to do this for Nate, not her nor Annalise. Asher comes to see Annalise, giving her the information to take down the doctor; but first he wants to know what is going on with Bonnie. She explains what her father did, but makes him promise not to tell anyone, especially Miller; he agrees.

Dr. Charmagne is on the witness stand, when Annalise confronts him about the Governor Brookhead told him to testify against her client, hired him as the head of the new mental health initiative. Annalise believes this is a bribe from the Governor and the Judge agrees; Nate is pleased with the outcome. Laurel finds Gabriel outside and offers to help him, in exchange for when she is second chair and will need his help.

Nate visits his father, who feels they are losing this case. Sr wants his chance to speak to the jury himself and fight for himself using his own words and no one calling him crazy or a liar. He wants his own day in court; Nate says it isn’t him he has to convince, but Sr. feels Annalise will listen to Nate if he tries hard enough. Annalise tells Gabriel to put a list together of all major insanity defense cases for the last 50 years where the defendant took the stand because Sr is taking the stand.

Oliver Hampton (Conrad Ricamora) enjoys the sex with Connor, but wants him to be the bad ass social justice guy who he really is. Oliver’s mom calls and he hopes the date they picked really works. Laurel and Gabriel work together with baby Christopher there. She talks to the baby saying Gabriel used the word “nutjob” and shouldn’t say those words around him suggesting talking to the baby and using eye contact is good so he doesn’t turn into a serial killer or anything. Gabriel asks if his dad passed down some bad genes or something? She reminds him that his dad isn’t around. He knows she is a single parent but didn’t know if the dad was completely out of the picture, he reveals his dad ghosted before he was even born. Frank watches the complete exchange.

Bonnie finally sits up and review the file on her bed, showing she had a little boy; seeing the photo of her sister, Julie abducting her newborn baby from the hospital.

Annalise questions Nate Sr. on the stand. He didn’t read while he was in solitary, but had a photo of him and his son. He admits when the guards took it, he went downhill from there. After coming out of a year in solitary he was scared and when Gerald Rinehoff approached him in the yard, he wasn’t a man, he was a bomb and exploded; it was what the shoe did to him, it made him very sick in the head. He confesses that he wasn’t himself.

Bonnie meets with Ronald Miller in the parking garage, who is happy she called. She apologizes, revealing the truth about her family. She tells him that her father molested her and her sister from the time she was 5 and her mother knew about it. They made money by making tapes and selling them to men. When she was 15, she got pregnant and had a baby boy; her parents told her that he died but she just found out he might be alive. She apologizes if this is too much for him and doesn’t know if this is the right time for her. He tells her to look at him and tells her she is the bravest person he has ever met and he loves her no matter what. He wraps his arms around her as she breaks down in tears.

The prosecutor questions Nate Lahey Sr. if it is possible that he threw the first punch. He says he remembers that it was the worst day of his life. The Judge orders him to stop questioning him as Annalise insists he is badgering a mentally ill person on the witness stand.

Back in the class room, Connor feels the jury is leaning towards the prosecution and Annalise wants them to discuss how they can still win this case, Gabriel stands up suggesting she should move for a mistrial. She doesn’t want to throw in the towel, but he feels it’s better than a guilty verdict. He presents her with a file, saying Mr. Cox referred to Sr. as a crack dealer but he only used Marijuana, so lying about his crimes is grounds for a mistrial. She worries about showing her hand to the State and she would have to rebuild a whole new trial and she doesn’t know if her client can handle this. He feels Sr. is the face of her whole class action suits. They vote and the majority of the class agrees with Gabriel.

In court, Mr. Cox says his closing arguments but when it is Annalise’s turn she looks at Nate Sr. then knocks on the table. She says 492,750 minutes is how long Nathaniel Lahey spent in a cell smaller in a parking space. Gabriel puts tape down on the carpet to show how small the room is, and just days after getting out, he snapped and exploded and lost his mind. She stands in the box, telling the jury this is all he heard for all those minutes; silence!

Outside the courtroom, Annalise tells Connor just because she didn’t go with the mistrial idea, doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good idea. He asks if she is going to tell Gabriel, she says he was the only one who knew the case well enough to catch that detail. She is trying to apologize to him. Gabriel rushes out to tell them the jury is back.

The jury has reached its verdict and Nate Lahey Sr. has been found not guilty by reason of insanity and will be remanded to care of the State until a suitable psychiatric facility can be found. Annalise tells Sr he has won, he told his story and this is all him.

Annalise says winning is a great strategy moving forward and this is one step. She tells them to keep working on the injustices in their legal system. She wants to keep working for the invisible population in prisons and tell their stories in front of a jury. Sr. forgives Nate saying how can he expect 12 strangers to forgive him if he can’t forgive his own son.

Laurel feels Gabriel should get behind Annalise so she can send the photo to his mom, but he doesn’t want to. She asks Frank if he is there to spy on her, but he is there to speak to Annalise; Laurel knows he is spying on Gabriel and demands to know who he really is. Governor Brookhead watches Annalise on the news and orders them to bring her in, wondering if Annlise has the balls to say this to her face!

Everyone celebrates Annalise win as Asher and Michaela announce they are planning their joint bachelor party. Oliver reveals he invited both his and Connor’s moms to come this Friday; Connor isn’t happy.

Bonnie calls Annalise and tells her that she is outside Julie’s house but she isn’t alone as Ron is with her. She hangs up on Annalise and knocks at Julie’s door.

Fastforward to Oliver and Connor’s wedding, where Bonnie is outside in the snow with blood on her foot; Connor is calling out for Oliver and catches Asher and his mom making out in the parking lot.

THE END!
