How to Get Away with Murder (HTGAWM) begins tonight with Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) and Connor’s (Jack Falahee) wedding, where DA Ronald Miller (John Hensley) is in the car with an engagement ring, he messages Bonnie (Liza Weil) asking her if they can talk.
1 MONTH EARLIER
Bonnie arrives at her sister, Julie’s (Elizabeth Morton) house. She quickly tells Ron she plans on staying because Julie has a little girl and needs to talk to her sister, so she is can’t leave. Annalise (Viola Davis) talks to Frank (Charlie Weber) worried that Ron can’t handle all of this even though Bonnie loves the guy. Annalise wants Frank to check on her because Bonnie turns into that abused little girl when she is around her sister; she has seen it for herself. Bonnie tells Ron that she loves him and she is glad he came, reassuring him she can handle this.
Connor and Oliver bring their moms to the venue they chose, but both their mothers want to pitch in on the location. It is quite clear that Oliver’s mother is not pleased with anything that is going on right now.
Gabriel (Rome Flynn) is at Caplan & Gold, while Laurel (Karla Souza) stares at him, pretending not to know everything Frank has told her about him. Frank calls her to tell her he is heading out of town, not divulging any details. Michaela (Aja Naomi King) wants to know what is going on today and Tegan (Amirah Vann) informs them their new client “Gut Suckers” is being sued for false claims and they need to worry about their client becoming bankrupt; she wants Laurel to run point on this case, saying it’s about time she paid the firm back!
Annalise meets with the Governor Birkhead (Laura Innes), who admits she was pissed off over her interview. She hates to lose and says she was wrong as public opinion is on Annalise’s side. Her pitch is to create the Pennsylvania Fair Defense Project, with her and Annalise working together. She understands it’s great publicity for the governor and is given two days to decide but it must stay confidential.
Miller calls Bonnie, who is avoiding him. Julie drops her daughter, Skyler off at school and she confronts her sister with the photo from the hospital. Julie reveals their dad made her take the baby, once she got home their dad took him somewhere and sold him. She swears that she never told her because she never wanted her to worry; Bonnie holds her crying sister.
Bonnie stays because she wants to know more, but Annalise wants her to come home. Julie comes out of the house, saying the best thing for her is to go to NA because all she wants to do is get high right now but Bonnie is suspicious.
Nate (Billy Brown) visits with his dad, Nate Sr. (Glynn Turman), who is still waiting for his transfer. He feels this is karma for what he did and wants to write the family a letter. Meanwhile, Annalise reviews the offer Birkhead gave her as Emmett (Timothy Hutton) walks in, apparently completely aware of the offer. He reminds her this is the same governor he has been protecting her from; Annalise tells him he is not going to decide what is right for her and will let him know when she has made her decision.
Asher (Matt McGorry) asks Connor’s mom if he can call her “mom” too and she says of course. Oliver calls Connor into the other room, where he turns the stove for Oliver’s mother. She wants them to get married in a church, which neither of them want. Asher puts his foot in his mouth when he inadvertently invites both mothers to the bachelor party.
The clinic students watch the video for Gut Suckers and Tegan is very rough on Laurel. Gabriel tells Laurel he can come by tonight to help her as she helped him but she declines. Miller wants to be there for Bonnie, but she feels digging around in any official capacity could put her niece in jeopardy. Bonnie discovers a gun and tells Miller she could use his help. Julie tells her group that Bonnie is in town, Frank is part of that group, recording as she says that she has secrets that would kill her sister.
Nate visits Annalise, at first saying he would like to help Bonnie, but then says he would like an address. Annalise tells him that the governor is apparently on their side, showing him the proposal from Birkhead.
At home, Oliver’s mother is enjoying time with baby Christopher as Connor’s mother goes upstairs. Michaela reveals her and Asher broke up and she is only focusing on work. Joanna, Oliver’s mother tells Laurel how women at her church tries Gut Suckers and all of them were on the toilet for days, it was like a liquid diet. Connor’s mom tells him that Joanna found another venue and wanted her to pitch in 10 grand but she doesn’t have the money; he wishes she would just respect their decision.
Oliver overheard their conversation and that Connor told his mom Oliver is afraid of his mother. Connor knows Oliver is a good son, but he needs to tell her. He feels like it is coming out all over again.
Bonnie confronts Julie about having an unregistered gun in the house, saying her daughter would end up in fostercare and she would end up in jail. Julie offers to help find her son if that is what Bonnie wants.
Annalise listens to what Frank heard. She feels that Bonnie was better off without any of this and doesn’t care what he does. He tells her that he will handle it. The next morning, she finds Emmett in her office who shows her this project is a smoke screen and says he can’t help her if she can’t see this. Once he leaves, Annalise calls to speak to the Governor with terms of her own. She wants her own budget and she wants Nate Lahey Sr completely pardoned.
Oliver is out trying tuxedos on with his mother. He wants to know why his mother doesn’t like Connor. He finally reveals that Connor is not the reason he has been pulling away and tells her that first of all, he is fine and healthy but he is HIV positive. He knows what she meant when he first came out when she said to “be safe.” He hates that he disappoints her and apologizes. She stands up and tells him to look at her, reminding him that she is there until the day she dies, no matter what; hating that he felt he had to go through this alone. He tells her that he wasn’t alone, he had Connor, she says then Connor should have told her!
Tegan wants to hear what Laurel came up with. She reveals another class action law suit that happened in 1993. Tegan is actually impressed with her work but Laurel tells her that Michaela should also take the credit. Michaela isn’t impressed that Asher invited Gabriel to the bachelor party. Tegan presents the case to Emmett, saying Gut Suckers will be paying more in legal fees than to their customers; when he doesn’t respond she knows he’s thinking about Annalise and the offer. She advises him to beg Annalise to stay because honestly, everyone wants to feel wanted.
Miller informs Nate that his dad will be transferred to a facility tonight. He also shares that Bonnie is suffering from the bad flu and should be okay soon. Frank meets with Bonnie, letting her hear the recording and gives her Julie’s arrest record of being at someone’s house where they have a son named Jake. It seems that Julie has known all along who Bonnie’s son is.
Connor comes home and Oliver’s mother asks him to sit with her. She gives him a wedding album that Olvier made when he was ten and how he was always trying to marry his Power Rangers. She knows how much Connor means to her son and vice versa. She feels they both deserve this and wouldn’t be upset if the ceremony happens to be in a church.
Emmett returns to Annalise’s office, admiring what she is doing and that is why he fought for her and the clinic. He explains that he fell in love with a client and the misconduct claim is the firm’s way of protecting themselves. He wants her to stay and he’s more than willing to destroy anyone who gets in her way. Annalise barges into the Governor’s office, turning down the job, saying she just doesn’t buy the sudden change of heart. She swears she isn’t Annalise’s enemy, saying the world needs real positive change. Annalise feels people need someone with no political motives fighting for the people in this state who are wrongfully imprisoned. The Governor tells her that Nate Sr has been pardoned as long as she accepts the job.
Bonnie shows Julie the photos of Jake, pleading with her to tell the truth for once. Julie says their dad was going to keep him home with them. Julie says once they left the hospital, she jumped out of the car and ran until she reached the house. She promised to protect him and that is what she did. She says she buried him in the woods.
The bachelor party is in full swing when Connor calls his dad, saying he wants to talk about the wedding. Laurel is stopped by Gabriel, who says he doesn’t like her that way because she isn’t his type and he wouldn’t hit on her knowing it hasn’t been that long since what happened to Wes. She now thinks he’s a creepy stalker because he just asked about Christopher’s dad the other day. She tells him not to talk to her anymore.
Nate tells his dad about being transferred later tonight and gives him the address of his victim’s brother, so he can write him. Sr. feels writing the letter will be the sanest thing he has done in years. Annalise tells Emmett he had every intention of turning Birkhead down, but not when she had the chance of freeing the man whose case gave her back her career. She feels this job gives her the power to do something good and right; it’s bigger than her and him, the firm and that is what she is choosing. Emmett picks up the phone and calls security to remove her badge and escort her out of C&G.
Frank drives Bonnie back to the city. Bonnie places a call to report an unregistered firearm where a child lives. Frank hangs up the phone, saying she will hate herself for doing that tomorrow and holds her knee as they drive. Annalise goes to Nate, informing him that his dad will be a free man, pardoned by the governor in a week and he needs to make space for his new roommate.
The prison guard comes in to transport Nate Sr. to his new facility as Nate calls to speak to his dad. He is told there is an incident. We see his father’s letter on the ground with blood all over the floor and his father dead, outside by the prison van.
THE END!
