Princess Margaret is often known as the wild child of the royal family. After all, she is the one royal who loved to party with high-profiled celebrities like Mick Jagger, supposedly mocked Liz Taylor and was known to be the life of the party. As a matter of fact, when she stepped in a room everyone couldn’t help but notice her, as she was often the best dressed and also the most beautiful woman around.
At least, that’s what Netflix’s highly acclaimed series The Crown wants everyone to believe. Apparently, Season 3 of the series will take a deeper look into Princess Margaret’s life. She will be played by actress Helena Bonham Carter, who is also often regarded as an enigmatic artist in Hollywood herself.
Everything that viewers will see in The Crown Season 3 might be somewhat exaggerated, according to royal experts. Princess Margaret might look like a whisky drinking and sneering socialite on the small screen but British writer Craig Brown points out that wasn’t necessarily true. In fact, Princess Margaret wasn’t the wild child that everyone thought she was behind palace doors.
Mr. Brown, who wrote the book, Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret, says a lot of the material in The Crown is either made up or exaggerated. He said, “There was no need to embellish the princess’ story lines, because the reality was so colorful. Unlike the queen, [who] always had to say the right thing at the right time, she always said the wrong thing. For Queen Elizabeth, life was all about doing the right thing. For Margaret it was, and always would be, much more of a performance.”
Apparently, the Queen’s mother disapproved of her daughter’s all-day drinking and her late-night socializing. If that weren’t enough, Princess Margaret was known to make fun of her mother’s clothing choices and even her Scottish castle. She was as opinionated as she was witty.
And while The Crown wants fans to believe that there was a bitter feud between Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret while they were growing up, Mr. Brown says that wasn’t the case. Instead, Margaret longed for her sister’s approval.
Season 3 is also expected to feature the demise of Princess Margaret’s marriage to Antony Armstrong-Jones. The series is expected to return to Netflix in January.
