Mara woke up unsure of herself. She had entered into a new relationship with Chris and she didn’t know if them being together wasn’t going to be a problem however she didn’t regret kissing Chris and he hadn’t regretted staying the night with her because he said they were two adults. Plus, they were both happier in the morning and so Mara ultimately decided to let go of her misgivings. She instead wanted to enjoy the moment and she did. She was happy and sure of everything until she went into work. Mara had been brought in another case because the client she needed to rescue hadn’t had permission to use the program. The client was Pilar Simonet and she lived in a retirement home that banned things like Reverie because they wanted their patients to live in the here and now.
Pilar broke that rule when she hands an aide bring her an at-home device and she was able to hide her sessions by telling the director she was getting hair treatments, so the director wasn’t happy. Jack Selve said Pilar had lung cancer and that she chose to miss an appointment in order to get lost in the program. He also mentioned how much he disapproves of the program because if the others could gain access to it they would never leave their rooms or take their daily exercises and so he said if Pilar didn’t come out that he would transfer her to a state facility. Mara later remembered that when she went into Pilar’s Reverie and she warns the young woman she ran into though that version of Pilar didn’t care what the director did because she said this time she didn’t want to leave. She said something about staying until it happened and so Mara tried to figure out what happened.
Mara was about to ask a question when bullets began to fly. She ducked and did her best to stay close to the ground, but Pilar knew what the shooting was about and had even hitched a ride out of there before the army moved in. It seemed whatever was in Pilar’s Reverie was a war of some kind and Mara got out of quickly. When she returned to real life, Mara tried to put the pieces together and figure out what Pilar recreated. She looked into where Pilar traveled because it turns out she was born in Arizona and so she traced the poster of a band back to the country Pilar was visiting in her Reverie. It was Chile. Chile, as it happens, had had a military coup in the 1970s and Pilar was reliving it. Mara didn’t know why Pilar would want to see that again and so felt compelled to go back in. And she talked to Paul about it because she wanted his help.
Only Paul hadn’t wanted her to go back into the Reverie. Paul has been concerned about her since Mara came out of someone else’s Reverie with a bruise and he confessed to Mara that shouldn’t have happened. He said it was just a program and so the fact that she was capable of getting hurt worried him. Paul thought maybe there was a glitch and until it was fixed he hadn’t wanted Mara to go after Pilar in a war-torn country yet Mara said she had to because Pilar would die if she didn’t receive treatment. She went after Pilar despite what Paul said and she thought she found out why Pilar felt the need to stay. Mara saw Pilar kissing a young man and theorized the reason Pilar created her dream world around such a time meant she hadn’t been ready to let go of her first love. So Mara left the program and she found out everything she could about this Joaquin.
Joaquin Alcazar had been a professor who left university to join the rebels. He led a raid during the coup and had died at a tragically young age. His story and the fact he never got back to Pilar was so unfortunate that Mara set out to save their love story. She went back into the program and she stopped Joaquin from leading the raid although that hadn’t been what Pilar actually wanted. Pilar had wanted Joaquin to keep the soldiers busy because she was going to use that to get the girls at the orphanage out of there. She explained to Mara that’s what happened last time and it was also the last time she felt her life had a purpose. Pilar tried to recreate that and Mara ruined the plan because Joaquin wasn’t where he was supposed to be. He had been brought to Pilar and that meant the soldiers were free to round up the girls because they wanted information on the rebels.
Pilar missed her chance to get those girls out of there and she blamed Mara. Mara should have left when she asked her to and Mara shouldn’t have just assumed it was about a guy, but Mara understood that she messed up and she wanted to help fix it. She asked Pilar about what they could do and had been told to just leave because Pilar hadn’t wanted her help. She pushed Mara away until Mara left the program. Mara later went to go check on the real Pilar’s condition and Pilar wasn’t doing so good. She was going to be moved if Mara didn’t get her out of the program by that afternoon and the director hadn’t wanted her to restart the program because he said he couldn’t go against policy. And so Mara came up with her own plan, all she needed was help from the others and Paul was willing to ignore the risks to help her.
Paul got Mara a couple of bombs to help rescue the girls in the program and he didn’t tell her or Charlie about his concerns. He instead brought his concerns to Alexis because they both knew there was only one person who could help them – Oliver Hill. Alexis hadn’t liked the idea of going to him for help and she did it anyway because she knew there was a problem with 2.0. She set up a lunch behind Charlie’s back and had told Oliver about the problem. The same problem he seemingly warned her about when they first started to work together and so Oliver understood what it was. He said it was like getting sick the morning after drink and he didn’t think it was something dangerous to Mara. Except he asked her what Mara had been doing when she got sick and found out the Military had used the program to detain people.
Oliver’s paranoia flared up and he warned her that the military would continue to abuse the program yet he threw a scene at the restaurant and that warned Alexis to get out of there. She left to go back to the company and by then Mara did what set out to do. She got Pilar to leave the program by helping to rescue the girls from the army and in real life, she was able to reunite Pilar with one of the girls. Elvia grew up and she had kids as well as grandkids because Pilar saved Elvia’s life a long time ago. Elvia thanked Pilar for what she did and the two women got to talk about everything that happened over the years.
And so Mara thought her day was over. She went home to Chris and had been happy to see him inside waiting, but she soon found out that the Chris she was talking to hadn’t been real. The real Chris called her and that one even said they hadn’t seen each other in three days. Meaning they never got back together and the Chris in her home had been a symptom of her using Reverie. So Mara didn’t realize she was losing her mind until it was too late!
And while everyone thought they shouldn’t be concerned about Oliver, Oliver somehow got his hands on an at-home set and he entered the Reverie program.
THE END!
