John is sitting in his truck looking at his divorce decree. A bank teller, who is also a friend, lets him into a safety deposit box. He talks about what he is going to do now. He puts the papers and his ring in the box and leaves. On his way out, the bank is robbed. Everybody gets down. One of the robbers watches all of them while they other hits the back. John stands up and explains that this is the most exciting thing to happen to him in a long time. Life has always happened to him. Just as the robber is about to shoot him, the police bust in and take the guy down.
Later, John shows up at the police station for the program. Two officers send him down the hall to punk him. He is running behind for roll call. He makes it in time. He sits with 2 other rookies. They all get assigned. Before John leaves, the sergeant tells him he is old and this mid-life crisis he is having is annoying. He doesn’t like him for that reason.
Nolan goes to his first call, a domestic. The guy is huge and Nolan is intimated. He tries to make friends. It works and he realizes the man is the one getting hit by his tony girlfriend.
Meanwhile, Rookie Chen is told to get out of the cruiser when she can’t tell her trainer where they are within seconds. They run into some Spanish people. He asks her to translate, she changes the words. He gives her an F. He speaks Spanish.
Chen and Nolan are forced to chase a man who is trying to find his unicorn while their trainers watch with humor. They get a call from the man’s wife. He left his kid in the car and its hot out. They all try to find the child. They find him. Nolan gets him out with the help of his trainer. He looks ready to cry when the child wakes up.
Nolan and his training office get a call to return to the address where they had a domestic dispute. They arrive to find the tiny wife hanging on the husband’s neck, stabbing him while the husband tries to get her off. They are too late. The man drops to the ground and bleeds out.
Outside, Nolan is mad at himself for not following up on the fact that the husband hinted he was being abused. The sergeant stops by the scene. He was hoping Bishop was going to tell him Nolan was bad but she says he jumped right in.
Nolan and the other rookies go out for a drink. They talk about their day. A bartender hits on John and he doesn’t even notice. Chen feels bad and tries to comfort him. It wasn’t his fault. They karaoke.
The net morning, Chen and Nolan wake up. They kiss in the kitchen. He wants to go out for breakfast but she reminds him everyone will find out they have been sneaking around for the last 2 months. They stay home and drink coffee.
The sergeant shows a video of Nolan trying to break through a fence. They all laugh. They are given a target for the day, a wanted man. Meanwhile, Chen’s TO makes her take down a drug addict. She kicks his butt and cuffs him. Her TO sees a woman come out of the store. He pauses. He talks to her, telling her that she knows him. She starts to focus. She is on drugs. She begs for money. He gives it to her. She runs. He tells Chen that was his wife. He hasn’t seen her in a year. Chen promises she won’t tell the others. They get a call, sighting of the man that is wanted. They head to the scene. They call for back-up and quickly end up in a shoot out. Chen’s TO gets shot. Chen steps up and shoots back. Nolan and Bishop arrive. Bishop fights a suspect while Nolan goes on the chase to get their man. He shoots him in the leg when the man grabs a woman as a hostage.
The sergeant tells Bishop to go home because he left his partner. Nolan goes home but comes back later to talk to the sergeant. He tells him he is going to come back and he needs to accept it. The sergeant tells him he is going to harass him. Bishop tells Chen to break it off with Nolan because it will brand her.
