The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that viewer’s collective hunch and seeming desires are being furthered. Yes, Jack (Peter Bergman) and Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) are inching closer to each other.
This one-time couple settled their differences long ago. In what could be looked back upon as a storyline reversal, it appears as though Phyllis’ ongoing reach-out and Jack’s ever-present shoulder availabilty is deeply similar to the arc that led to Philly’s formation.
As Y&R fans recall, Phyllis initially began talking to Billy (who was then played by Burgess Jenkins) about Jack’s inability to stand up for her. Phack was coming off the horrid Marco (also played by Peter Bergman) ruse and Phyllis felt that Jack didn’t defend her honor, or go after Victor (Eric Braeden). That weak plot point wrote Jack out of character and was revealed as intended to help establish Philly.
In the summer Jack and Phyllis were shown together at Hilary’s (Mishael Morgan) post-funeral gathering. More recently, Billy’s (Jason Thompson) gambling wreck has paired Phyllis and Jack on multiple occassions.
Phyllis took charge of Jack’s pill addiction earlier this decade. Memorable Abbott cabin scenes detailed the painstaking efforts Phyllis made to help Jack break what had become a habit.
This time, Phyllis was written into enabler territory. She literally froze for the past handful of weeks since Billy admitted to what he referred to as a lifestyle. While her heart was in the right place, Phyllis did not know how to stop what Billy was doing. Phyllis’ actions reminded fans of Vickie’s (Amelia Heinle) equal inability to prevent Billy’s gambling recurrences.
Michelle Stafford’s version of Phyllis would have never been written into a Philly scenario. So Genoa City observers who rejected the forced play-along have always known that the Phyllis they’ve been watching since 2014 isn’t actually the same character. Therefore Phack was never destined to be revived, even though Tognoni’s edition was committed to Jack until the Marco storyline was over.
While many Y&R fans have panned the rewritten version of Summer (Hunter King), large segments of the audience do agree with Phyllis’ daughter on three points. They did not like the Phyllis-Jack split, or think that Phyllis and Billy should be a thing. Like Summer, they are willing to repair Tognoni’s Phyllis with Jack and see how that goes.
Projecting Phack back is easy . Nothing stands in Jack’s way, romantically, right now. If Phyllis drops Billy, Jack would be her natural fallback option.
Soap opera fans care about consistency and believability. But if Phack comes back it won’t necessarily be Y&R’s admission that Philly was wrong. Instead, the couple revisit would simply follow true love.
