The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Tessa’s (Cait Fairbanks) sincere overture to Mariah (Camryn Grimes) will eventually lead to at least their friendship being revived. It’s understandable that Mariah feels the way she does and that Tessa was conflicted. So let’s see how this plot point plays out.
Stealing one’s intellectual property is wrong. No if’s, no and’s, no but’s. However, Tessa admitted her mistake and thankfully was offered ongoing employment at the Hamilton-Winters Group. That should allow Tessa to record more songs in the future.
Devon (Bryton James) is playing this situation smartly. He’s offering a second chance to Tessa, while also retaining a true talent who still may become a valuable asset for his recording division.
Tessa, along with the viewers, recognized the potential of Mariah’s creative writing ability. Merging her talent with Tessa’s musical chops can create great music, eventually. Yes, personal factors are preventing this collaboration from happening. However, Mariah just needs time to accept Tessa’s apology and then to reform a friendship.
Along with the business issue that was discussed is the deeply personal matter that was raised when Mariah kissed Tessa last year. That act shocked Tessa and also made Mariah realize that she was not heterosexual, as she had long believed.
Tessa appears to have retained her heterosexual stance, but might be bisexual. However, this character’s dialogue has been written in a purposely interpretive fashion. That allows the audience to consider matters as it likes and enables Y&R to revisit sexuality issues, as it may be doing now.
With however executive producer and head writer Mal Young instructs his team to proceed, this scribe is hoping that a caring and compassionate approach continues to be offered to all parties.
Those who face identity issues, like Mariah, deserve to have their circumstance handled with honesty. Doing so will do more than tell a story, it will also offer encouragement to real world individuals.
At the same time, those who are uncomfortable with this type of storyline direction shouldn’t be labeled either. That type of branding is exactly what people who face Mariah’s issues endure from some others in their own worlds.
Ideally, a measured, believable arc will unfold that presents life as it truly is. Soap operas, including Y&R, have often served as forces for good. Fans of this endearing and enduring daytime drama should be confident that will happen again through Mariah and Tessa’s storyline, with however it unfolds.
