The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that yes, Adam Newman could still return to Genoa City despite the sudden departure of his wife and son. Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) just left Genoa City with Connor (Gunner and Ryder Gadbois), who appears to be nearing kindergarten age? Soapy logic must now be applied.
Egan publicly announced her departure from the cast. She provided plenty of time for a fitting Chelsea write-out, but many believe Y&R dropped the ball in this regard.
Along with Egan’s announcement to her fans was a wink at the future. The basic message she sent is that Chelsea wouldn’t be gone forever, meaning that Egan was open to returning to Y&R some day.
Okay, it’s a year or two from now, and some invented reason brings Chelsea back to GC. Hopefully that is linked to Adam’s (Justin Hartley) resurrection, or is the lead-in to said needed event. With whatever happens, Chelsea will return with her SORAS’d son, Connor. How old could he be at that time? Well, let’s consider daytime’s open use of the suspension of disbelief theory.
This creative method, which has often been employed by soap operas, asks the audience to accept the rapid aging syndrome, where the R, A and S in the acronym SORAS, with the S representing Soap and the O, Opera. Characters are advanced past their actual ages based, on their on-screen birth dates, in order to further a variety of storylines. In other words, the real world calendar and Y&R’s chronology don’t have to match.
Many viewers previously accepted the impossible face-change of Connor’s father (from Michael Muhney to Hartley). So why wouldn’t a significant segment of viewers also buy into Connor being a teenager when he returns to town with his mom?
Charlie (Noah Alexander Gerry) and Mattie (Lexie Stevenson) were SORAS’d from children who were about Connor’s age to high schooler’s in 2017. Various other Y&R characters also experienced the same in past years.
Some questioned why Faith (Alyvia Alyn Lind) wasn’t SORAS’d as well, as the younger versions of Charlie and Mattie were once near her age group. Lind’s stature within the show is the actual answer. But her burgeoning career could easily allow Shick’s daughter to be aged along with her cousin when Connor returns.
More importantly, the call for Connor’s dad to be brought back has never ceased. A sizable contingent wants Adam Newman back and if possible, in the form of Muhney. While fans rightfully wonder if their current hopes were played by Y&R teasing out all that Adam information in recent months, this soap’s future affords ongoing opportunity to deliver.
