This Is Us begins tonight with Kate (Chrissy Metz) revealing to everyone she is pregnant, but struggling with Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) depression. He is back on his antidepressants, and everyone is supportive as Toby continues to hide in their bedroom and remains tired; Kate doesn’t know what to do.
10 year olds Kevin (Parker Bates) and Randall (Lonnie Chavis) play video games and begin to fight, which Rebecca (Mandy Moore) quickly breaks up. Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) comes home with a black eye, revealing he got it boxing at the gym. Rebecca confronts him about boxing with actual human beings, he feels its not a big deal; but she makes him promise to only use a punching bag from now on.
Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) follows up on a resume she has sent out as Randall (Sterling K. Brown) is busy prepping for church in Philly. He is trying to connect with the people in the community he is trying to represent as he runs for Office, after church he wants to get an authentic Philly Cheese Steak. The girls want to talk about themselves, and selling their scout cookie sales, but since their mom was fired they are down on their sales, Beth suggests setting up a table and they should get Deja (Lyric Ross) to help.
Kate calls her mom, who tells her to simply remain supportive and patient of Toby, but reminds her to take care of herself. Kate hangs up as she needs to take care of Audio, who ate something out of the garbage.
Kevin (Justin Hartley) continues to obsess over the photo of his dad and the woman in Vietnam, who is wearing his dad’s necklace. Zoe (Melanie Liburd) is finished her documentary and wants to check out the festivals. Kevin needs to text Jimmy Kimmel and then he is “in” on the tradition of pampering with Zoe, but she tells him she does this alone. She advises him to stop obsessing over the picture.
A young Randall wants Jack to teach him to box, but Jack says Rebecca no boxing in this house; Randall says a kid is bullying him at school and promises he won’t defend himself unless he has to but he will feel better knowing he can.
Randall seems to be thoroughly enjoying the black church is Philly until Brother Solomon introduces him to the entire congregation, calling him out for not bringing his entire family and announces that Randall is running against him and welcomes him to their humble neighborhood. Meanwhile, Beth brings the girls to a store, only to find out another family had set up their scouts table there earlier, she promises they will find another spot.
Kevin calls Randall, who reminds him that he doesn’t respect boundaries so Randall sends him an address where they can meet. Toby emerges from the bedroom asking Kate what is wrong with Audio, She tells him what happened at the dogpark and she says she will call the vet, closing the bedroom door behind her. Toby didn’t mean to make her feel bad.
Jack shows Randall a proper stance and box, saying he is a South Paw. Rebecca walks in on them with their boxing gloves on and isn’t impressed.
Randall meets Kevin at a Vietnamese Restaurant, saying this is where he brings his famous siblings that can’t be seen. Kevin shows Randall all the stuff he has found and Randall wants to know why now? Kevin recalls a childhood memory and Randall confesses that he is curious too but their dad made it very clear that he didn’t want his Vietnam chapter was something he didn’t want them to know him from. The Korean Waiter (Jason Her) brings them food “on the house” thanks to Kevin’s show. Randall wants Kevin’s help with his campaign.
Kate calls Rebecca from the veterinarian revealing that Audio swallowed a rock. She tells her to bring him home and if there is any sign of distress, she can immediately bring him back in; this way she is in control. Rebecca loves that Kate is calling her for advice, but there is a secret she needs to know. There is a million things she has to decide on, she needs to simply take a deep breathe, make a choice and hope she didn’t screw up too badly.
Rebecca is furious that Jack is teaching a very young Randall how to box after she just told him not to box. Jack tells her he is being picked on at school, she says he can go punch some guy at the gym but he can’t blindly follow the wishes of a kid and he definitely cannot hide things from her about their son, she leaves to call the principal.
The girls set up a table, and are about to sell 4 boxes until they realize Beth didn’t bring the swiper and can’t make a sale without it. Beth apologizes that she cannot be as good as Riley’s mom; when her daughter agrees, Beth orders her to shut up and tells them they are going!
Rebecca learns from the principal that Randall lied about the bully, Jack says he will talk to Randall. He confesses to Rebecca that he boxes because it helps him with things – it quiets things, wishing he could explain it.
Kate texts Toby, saying she is almost done with the vet, asking how he is feeling; calling him “Boo-thang” He gets off the couch, takes a shower, gets dressed and grooms himself. At home, Deja talks to Beth about how her mom lost a lot of jobs. Beth tries to reassure her that she doesn’t need to worry about her, but Deja tells her that Randall called her “exceptional” and Randall must think that isn’t a big deal. She reminds Beth that she is too, and Randall loves her like that too, like they are in a Disney movie or something; but if she is sad, she needs to talk to him about it. Beth tells Deja she is really good at these talks, both girls come in as Beth apologizes for exploding and they apologize for being a brat.
Kevin helps Randall get the people to register for voting; Randall is confronted with the fact that he is using Kevin’s “Baby Man” celebrity to get his Korean votes to beat Solomon in the race. Randall is told they believe he has never set foot in the area before and they bet if he gets elected he would never set foot there again; calling him completely transparent. Randall admits he has never been there before, but he is there now. He sees empty storefronts, bad potholes and a guy carrying a bike tire worried it would get stolen; but he needs to know what the neighborhood needs and wants, as long as they talk to him and his kickass sister keeps translating for him. They smile when he uses the one word Kevin taught him in Korean.
Kate tells Toby they will have to monitor Audio, as he swallowed a rock. She feels its huge that Toby got dressed. He doesn’t feel better but he’s worried Kate will leave him eventually as this is not what she signed up for. Audio runs for the door, he initially declines going for a walk but Kate thinks he should and he agrees.
Kevin talks to Randall about finding his birth dad which led him to buying the building, leading him to running for council. He just goes for something, which is remarkable. Kevin says he has that inside of him about their dad. Randall understands, bringing up their childhood memory of peeling the wallpaper; Randall hopes he finds what he is looking for.
Randall wonders if his mom is angry about the boxing as Jack asks him about him lying. He admits he wanted to learn boxing so he could be more like his dad, similar to Kevin who is tough; he got that from Jack and he didn’t. Randall knows he is Jack’s son but Kevin is his son son. He got DNA stuff that Randall didn’t. Jack says he is his “son son” and he also has something greater than throwing a punch; he has a brain so smart that he tricked his old man into thinking he had to teach him how to fight and that is going to be his secret weapon.
Randall is in his office when the Korean man returns, talking about how his grandmother has never voted once in her life. It has always been clear to her that no politician has cared about what she wants, but today she registered to vote for the first time in 75 years because he made her believe that he cares. He wants to be Randall’s campaign manager, introducing himself as John.
Jack tells Rebecca about his talk with Randall, saying he can’t get his head around Randall sometimes. She gives Jack headgear for boxing, saying if boxing is important to him, she just wants him to be safe. He tells her about how him and his brother used to box, saying the gift is great. She wants to learn how to box and he tells her to put on the head gear but she refuses as he puts on the gloves. He jokes that her in the gloves and nightgown is a fantasy he didn’t even know he was missing. She tells him to shut up and show her how to do it, but instead he kisses and thanks her.
Randall goes to see Solomon at his office, telling him he was good and gracious at church but he also made it very clear that he doesn’t think Randall belongs. Randall tells him it was well played. Randall recalls watching a boxing matches with Jack and his dad explaining how opponents just plaster on a huge smile when they get hit really hard. Randall tells Solomon he got a campaign manager and he is going to win Korea Town.
Kate and Toby walk the dog as she tells him she is not going to leave him as she signed up for better or worse. She reminds him that ever since she was a little girl she always needed to be coddled and he has talked her off of more ledges than she can count and the truth is she is strong and the things she has been through has made her tough as hell and if he thinks this is going to scare her away, he has another thing coming. If he falls again, she is going to be right there to pick him up.
Kate tells him this is in sickness and in health, for better and for worse. She is talking forever. Toby touches her face, saying she is incredible. She looks over and laughs as the Audio is pooping.
Kevin goes to see Zoe at the hotel, really needing to talk to her. He explains he never knew how to ask his dad things and hands her a bag. She opens it up and its a Visa application for Vietnam, he needs to find the woman and figure out his dad’s story and wants Zoe to come with him. He’s hoping she will dig all of this, and she does.
Randall returns to Beth drinking a glass of wine. He is on a high about his campaign manager, but she reminds him that she was fired and she has been pretending she has been fine. She doesn’t feel confident about herself as she hasn’t had any job offers, he wants her to join his campaign, saying anything they take on, they crush; swearing its not a pity job as he would never offer her a pity job. She leans in and tells him, “Let’s win you an election!”
