American Horror Story: 1984 (AHS:1984) begins tonight in 1970, where three camp counselors are fooling around and one pulls out a condom, but they are distracted by a sound outside of their bunkbed. They continue to kiss as someone opens the door to the bedroom full of sleeping campers, she (Monroe Cline) peeks out again, told it is nothing and the other two begin to undress. The timid counselor takes her sweater off and looks back at the couple to see that a butcher knife had been stabbed through both of them, killing them instantly; she is next and then dragged out by the killer who cuts her ears off and piles all the campers on the floor with all their ears gone.
Xavier Plympton (Cody Fern) is instructing his aerobics class, including Montana Duke (Billie Lourd), Ray Powell (DeRon Horton), Chet Clancy (Gus Kenworthy), and Brooke Thompson (Emma Roberts). After class, in the shower Montana offers to introduce Brooke to Chet, saying that he is obviously intrigued by her; but Brooke says she is the last American virgin and has no intention of hooking up with anyone. She is new in town as Montana tells her she is going to be the biggest aerobics competitor of all times.
In the cafeteria, Xavier is talking about the murder a few days prior in the park, where someone had been stabbed over 40 times and almost decapitated. He tells them his cousin who is a cop told him they believe it is someone who is responsible for several other unsolved murders in town. Brooke pipes up, saying that serial killers become more active in the summer months because people sleep with their windows open at night. Everyone greets her, explaining how they all met and know each other. Xavier says he is getting out of town to be a camp counselor to get away from all the murders, suggesting they all go with him as they are desperate for counselors. Brooke is the only one who declines as she is taking classes at the local college this summer, but Xavier tells her she doesn’t want to be there this summer as it might cost her her life. Montana writes her number on Brooke’s hand, so if she changes her mind.
Brooke comes home to her apartment complex, gets ready for bed, checking on the engagement ring in her jewelry box before she goes to sleep. She is harshly woken up by a man on top of her, demanding her to get the jewelry. He orders her to swear on Satan that this is all she has but continues to throw her around. He tells her she is going to be famous as she is going to die by the Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez (Zach Villa), but they are interrupted by a neighbor who heard her screams and pound son her door, demanding to know if she is okay. He promises he will find her as Satan will show him the way.
Brooke takes a swig out of the flask, as Montana calls her a “bad ass” while they travel off to the camp. She tells Brooke she is definitely doing the right thing going with them as Ray says he brought enough drugs and booze for them to enjoy the entire summer; Chet disagrees as he worked so hard to get into the spot in sports but he takes some of the cocaine, along with Montana.
The van stops at a random gas station, where everyone unloads so the van can be filled up and they can use the bathroom and phone. Xavier checks his messages and one says, “you can’t just take your dick and run away as there is no where to run and no where to hide. I know exactly where you are going!” The gas station attendant learns they are going to Camp Redwood as counselors for the summer but he warns them to go back to the city and never show up there again; they brush him off but he tells them they are all going to die!
Xavier isn’t paying attention and hits a man who is standing in the middle of the road. Brooke rushes to get a blanket as Xavier feels he didn’t hit him as the blood and cuts are old and they didn’t hit him. They try to help him, but he grabs Brooke’s hand and warns them that they have to leave there as he tried, but they drive rapidly onto the campground property. They are greeted by Margaret Booth (Leslie Grossman) who is the owner of the camp. She quickly reveals they are short staffed due to the Olympics as Brooke calls her over for a medic or nurse as they have a situation. Margaret tells them to bring him over to the infirmary where Rita (Angelica Ross) says he is extremely dehydrated, probably after hiking and getting lost. She feels he is lucky they found him. She hooks him up to an IV, revealing she works at Hawthorne Hospital the rest of the year.
Margaret brings them on a tour, explaining what will be their responsibilities, as drowning is the number two cause of death among children campers. The five counselors meet Chef Bertie (Tara Karsian), who puts them to work carrying crates of food. Margaret explains that Bertie was already working there when she was just a counselor and they are blessed to have her with them. They are explained the rules and shows them the girls and boys cabins, reminding them to not mix. Xavier says they are not going to remain celibate all summer as there are co-ed showers in West Hollywood. She is aware of, but she has been fighting God’s fight around the world, saying she bought this camp to be a safe, decent and Godly place for the children in the summer. She expects them all to follow them all without exception.
Sitting around the fire later that night, they all smoke a joint but Rita says she only smokes cigarettes. Brooke admits to her that she was attacked by the Night Stalker in her own home and he would come after her but Montana reminds her that nothing bad will happen there. Rita begins to tell them that 14 years prior something awful happened there but Xavier stops her, saying he understands the tradition of ghost stories but Brooke was truly attacked. Rita says it is true, telling them to question how they got these jobs without experience. It is because anyone who knows anything about Camp Redwood doesn’t want to be in Camp Redwood. This is the site of the worst camp massacre of all time.
His name was Benjamin Richter, but everyone called him Mr Jingles (John Carroll Lynch). He was sent to Nam and went for a second tour because he liked to kill, cutting off his enemies ears as a trophy; no one knows why he snapped, but one night he slaughtered an entire cabin including 10 people. Margaret comes and reveals there were 9 victims, not 10, showing her ear missing, saying she will tell them everything. She was asleep when she heard the sound of his keys jingling, knowing she would die when he went to slit her. She stayed in the light and warmth, saying it was Jesus and she stayed above, saw him cut off her ear and she gave him not a twitch nor a sound and that is how she stayed a live; by the grace of God. Jingles was put on trial, within an hour he was found guilty. She cannot escape him though and that is why she bought the camp so she can take her dark memories and turn it into something bright and happy. She reminds them the kids are coming tomorrow and this is the last time she wants to hear about that horrible night.
Suddenly, the man who was lying on the road wakes up in the infirmary and staggers to the mirror, where he reveals that his ear is missing too.
Brooke goes to the infirmary, but the light bulb blows out, scaring her. He says she shouldn’t be there as she helps him back into bed, telling him he doesn’t look so good. He wants to know where they are as she tells him she is surprised they are reopening this dump. She tells him it is a summer camp called Camp Redwood. He jumps up, urgently shouting for her to say something terrible is going to happen and she needs to get out.
Brooke tells the others that maybe the hiker has a concussion but something is definitely wrong with him. Suddenly Trevor Kirchner (Matthew Morrison) barges in, chastising them for fraternizing, but then admits he was only joking and he is the event coordinator. Montana insists that she knows him, but he was in a Jane Fonda workout video, and that is how she’s seen him in the original but he was removed as his private parts were flopping around like a baby elephant’s trunk and it was distracting from Jane herself so he was pulled from the video.
Later, Trevor goes outside, finding that Montana got naked and jumped into the lake; Trevor begins to undress to join her; he confessing how she pleasured herself to him in the video. Trevor goes under the water, but a storm comes and the two have to get out of the lake.
Meanwhile, it is a disaster at the psychiatric hospital where all the patients are outside, Mr Jingles hit the mass release button on the way out; they are combing the grounds and they try to reassure that he won’t get far.
3 hours earlier
An orderly (Pierce Minor) opens Jingles room, to see that he is hanging himself from the ceiling, but he isn’t actually dead. He chokes out the orderly and removes the noose. He takes the keys and casually walks out of the psychiatric facility for the criminally insane; releasing everyone from their rooms, causing havoc for the authorities. They find an article in his room that shows site of camp slayings to reopen for summer!
Roy (Don Swayze) is spooked at the garage, originally thinking it is just the cat, but when he returns to working under his car he hears more noises and calls out for whomever is there. Mr Jingles kicks out all the car jacks and crushes the mechanic before stomping on his face and taking his keys.
At the camp, Chet is complaining about not being at the Olympics, snapping at Brooke and then throwing a crushed beer can at Ray, cutting his hand open. Ray goes off to find bandages as Brooke leaves too. Outside, the truck arrives from Roy’s garage and Mr Jingles is back at the camp where he committed all those murders years earlier.
Brooke checks on Ray, feeling Chet may be really sorry and helps clean up his wound. He tells her to be safe as she looks for some bandages. When she goes into the room with the beds, she finds the hiker has been repeatedly stabbed and is hanging dead on the door in the infirmary. She runs screaming towards the cabin but no one can hear her as everyone is watching the Olympics. Brooke falls down a hill and into puddles as she is desperate to get to help; she runs in, saying “He is here. He is outside and trying to kill her. She saw his raincoat and kept hearing his keys. All three men go out the door, mocking her that no one is out there.
She tells them the hiker has been murdered and cut off his ear, causing Xavier to think twice about it. All of them walk together to the infirmary with Brooke refusing to go back in. Rita leads the group in, but when she looks there is nothing and Rita tells her she is “tripping.” Xavier feels the hiker could have wandered off from where he came from. They all make fun of her and she jumps, terrified when she sees Margaret outside the door. She tells them to get some rest as they have a big day tomorrow; everyone leaves and she demands Brooke to clean herself up.
Brooke wakes up to a phone ringing, waking up Montana who is holding a knife. Brooke is curious because the hiker said the phones were down so why is the payphone ringing. Brooke heads outside to answer it and hears keys jingling. Brooke asks, ‘Who is this?”
THE END!
