Grey’s Anatomy begins tonight with Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Dr. Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) have sex, after which she reminds him he cannot sleep there and needs to go. He gets dressed as she giggles, watching him. He kisses her goodbye and tells him to tiptoe out of the house. DeLuca is almost out of the door when he runs into Zoe, wondering why she isn’t in bed. He returns to the room as Meredith worries that her kids know him only as the sad guy from the couch. DeLuca smiles as he learns she was planning on telling her kids about him; she checks to see if the coast is clear, asking him to leave quietly.
Meanwhile, Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) speaks to his sister, Megan promising he will be there for therapy but is dealing with a crying Leo. He drops the phone, telling her he will call her later. Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) explains to Meredith that her ex-husband heard their son call Ben Warren (Jason George) “dad” and he is all bent out of shape about it. Meredith asks how she told Tuck about when she started dating Ben as Miranda knows this is about DeLuca because Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) is very chatty. Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) joins them, informing them that his wife, Dr. Jo Karev (Camilla Luddington) is back! He doesn’t want to have a speech but begs Bailey not to act weird. She welcomes Jo back who simply tells her that she is going to the lab.
Dr. Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) and Dr. Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack) are joined by Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) who learns it is happening as it is ready. Tom doesn’t want to bait anyone with false hope as Amelia and Link hope this isn’t anything. They meet their patient, revealing they need their approval to try this procedure when the stem cells arrive.
Dr. Nico Kim (Alex Landi) walks with Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli), saying he isn’t nervous about job interviews as he aces them. Levi suggests there are a lot of jobs here in Seattle, so why San Francisco? Nico walks away to see his patient.
Dr. Dahlia Qadri (Sophia Ali) meets with her patient in the ED, saying she would like to take her word that this is IBS, but she needs to order a CT. Qadri calls out for Dr. DeLuca when another patient asks if he is a doctor, saying she is having trouble putting on her shoes; opening her coat, her high heel is embedded in her chest.
Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) comes to the ED doing an ultrasound. The patient says the shoes are new, she drank too much at a club and took her shoes off to walk up the stairs to her apartment; that is all she remembers. Richard walks by and calls out Jemma’s name, he says they are mutual friends. She rolls her eyes as he begins to understand how this all happened.
Nico and Levi have a patient who is having spinal surgery as Nico is confident he will have him home in time for dinner. Miranda notices their patient’s father is one of her patients that she does bowel surgery on every four years. She explains that Dr. Kim is Dr. Lincoln’s fellow and he is being wooed by top hospitals and sports teams.
Alex comes to see his autistic patient, Gus but is called to meet with Meredith; they are still waiting to hear from the rare blood organizations. She asks about Jo as Alex frets that it is happening again; that Jo is broken and will leave him. Meredith reminds him that this is Jo, not Izzy and she has been through worse and came through. She promises it not happening again.
Jo is in the lab when Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) comes in. Jo complains this is where things go that go from boring to more boring. He wanted her to help him with his skin research and she is willing to help, with sarcastic comments and all.
Owen arrives for his neuro-emotional technique therapy, something Megan swears by. Owen challenges that this is a trick and not science when it comes to finding trauma in his muscle reactions. He feels if this helped Megan than what the hell. He continues to call it “voodoo therapy”, saying Megan is supposed to help. Owen is asked if he thinks Megan is right.
DeLuca has the patient, Avi with IBS inside getting scans as she complains that this is the worst it has ever been. He asks her to stay still, reminding her she is doing great. Meredith is paged when DeLuca feels she is in too much pain for it to be IBS. Meredith feels Zoe is being normal while DeLuca doesn’t feel they are doing anything wrong. DeLuca explains he has many first cousins and how they are attached to him; the problem isn’t that he will like kids, the problem will be her kids are going to like him more than her. The scans come up and Avi is in labor, Meredith chastises DeLuca for not running a pregnancy test. Meredith tells DeLuca to page OB and the Chief as Avi is crowning.
Richard asks Maggie to give him a minute with Jemma, who says he isn’t her doctor and doesn’t owe anything to Ali who is dead. She reminds him he has a wife and kids; she had Ali and now she has a stiletto stuck in her chest and a bottle of tequila waiting for her at home. She orders him to leave before she calls security. Richard orders Maggie to run a tox screen to make sure she isn’t still drunk. Maggie shouts for Richard to get out.
Avi is in full labor, as Meredith is helping her deliver. Miranda notices on the scans that she has two uteruses as Meredith delivers a healthy baby boy.
Jackson asks Jo if she followed through with the whole birth mom thing. She wants to focus on their technique and when he continues to talk; she says that she was wrong and this is the boring lab. Levi is impressed with how easy Nico made the surgery look. The link comes to get some blood samples from his patient for the stem cell procedure, but talks to her daughter who is openly aware of her limbs and extremities, being grateful for them and would love that for her mom. She wants her mother to have hands again, so much so she can’t breathe.
Tom and Amelia are in their lab, taunting Amelia that she is missing her boyfriend. Asking if it is weird having sex with a cartoon character. She says the sex is athletic, eye contact and no one cries after and he is funny and fun, easy to hang out with. Tom says he is Amelia’s “Altman”, referring to Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver).
Owen explains how when he came back from Germany he got back with Amelia and it is what he wanted. Owen admits there is no Teddy and have bad timing. He is asked if this is truly an accident as this is the opposite of why he went to Germany. He isn’t stupid, and doesn’t like hurting people so why? The therapist tells him it sounds like a pattern and if they can find the original event that started the pattern, they can stop it from replaying.
Miranda comes to see how Nico’s surgery went. Josh was awesome and it looks great. She is happy but Josh wants to know about the bathroom situation, they lower the rails from the bed as Josh learns that Nico is looking at another hospital; Josh tells him hospitals are boring and he should find himself a hockey team. Josh begins to walk but suddenly collapses and they give him oxygen, calling for equipment.
Maggie is scrubbing in for Jemma’s surgery, explaining how she is going to make sure her heart isn’t affected by the heel; telling her father that he really shouldn’t be there. He confesses the last time he has seen Jemma was when she was eating cake on the 17th anniversary of her sobriety. He talks about taking the bat to the bar and he didn’t take a drink. He is just telling her that if it wasn’t for Catherine… but they are interrupted when Maggie learns there is a 911 page for a cardiac in ortho. Richard said he will talk Qadri through the procedure, knowing Jemma doesn’t want him on the case.
DeLuca checks on Avi and her baby as Miranda continue to dodge calls from Tucker. She asks Meredith what is wrong with a boy having two great men in his life. Meredith asks about the roles being reversed which angers Miranda. She also explains that she should sit Zoe down and explain what is going on because most kids already have a clue like her son did when she began dating Ben. DeLuca returns, saying Avi had a pregnancy test but didn’t wait for the results as she was sure what was going on. Miranda reminds him to trust but verify as she makes fun of him getting caught.
Owen is told to go through various memories as the therapist figures out it’s Owen’s distrust and begins to question him on his mistrust of Teddy or when there was a moment when he did. Owen wants to talk about the Iraq war; but when he tests Owen he wants to know if he has a memory of distrust when he was 10. Owen feels like he can’t remember but is encouraged to not look too hard. He talks about winning an award, feeling great and proud; the best he ever felt but it doesn’t sound like it.
Tom finds out from Amelia that Owen went to Germany because she told him too. When Tom asks if she thinks this was a one night stand between friends but Amelia is certain this is a “love baby.” Amelia tells him as a friend that Owen and Teddy are inevitable. Link tells them the stem cells arrived, Tom tells Amelia they could be giving a paralyzed women the use of her arms, so inevitable doesn’t scare him.
Josh is in surgery as Maggie explains that the artery is destroyed and she is only doing a temporary fix, so he needs to go on the transplant list. His stats begin to fall as Nico feels horrible, with Levi looking on.
Owen talks about bringing his certificate home but his mom tells him to sit down, informing him that his dad died. That day. He never told anyone about it because he felt ashamed for being so happy while she was so sad. Owen doesn’t trust joy and stops it before something terrible or the bad news comes. The moment is over, it came and he is okay, so they need to stop the replay. Owen asks his therapist, “How?” He is shown a technique of what to do, Owen begins to cry as he does the position and simply breaths.
Richard gives Jemma an update, revealing he did the surgery. She asks if she can sue him and use the money to buy new shoes. He angrily calls her senile and an ingrate as he just saved her life, calling her a “stubborn drunk.” She begins to laugh at him, but they get real about her having 17 years. She wants them back as Richard reminds her the years don’t matter, just today does. She tells him to start his count all over again and then tell her about it. Richard explains he almost did it, telling her about the very bad day at the bar. He takes her hand as she asks him to tell her more.
Link, Tom, and Amelia begin the surgery. Miranda talks to her son, saying he needs to call his father and apologize and go back to calling Ben “Ben”. She notices Pop Pop, her patient in the hallway as she finds out something went really wrong. She promises to find out and will be back, but she walks into the OR where Maggie says he had a massive pulmonary embolism from the bone cement. Nico tries to explain but Miranda says he made a mistake on a healthy 21-year-old man. She tells Levi to close but Nico is going to come with her and will absorb Pop Pop’s grief and is to remember it so he never makes this mistake again.
Jackson tells Jo they can continue to work in awkward silence or she could explain. She says he was right when he told her not to go looking. He rephrased what he said and that she went looking, meaning she needed this. Jo denies it, saying everything is a mess. She doesn’t have a great job and Alex isn’t happy. She won’t communicate with Alex as it will only hurt and won’t help. Jackson insists she doesn’t believe that. She admits she took everything for granted and now it feels impossible to get it back. Jackson reveals it was Meredith that asked him to look in on her because she knows how things mess with their heads.
Jackson confronts her about being drunk, knowing she has vodka in the water bottle. He is happy she isn’t working with patients. She tries to leave, but he pleads with her to stay as he is trying to help her. He promises that if she sets foot in the hospital drunk again, she won’t be met with compassion! Jo leaves.
Richard informs Maggie that Jemma’s surgery went well. Miranda and Nico inform Josh’s grandfather about what happened. Pop Pop doesn’t understand what happened as Miranda had assured him Josh would be in good hands. Nico takes in the whole scene very solemnly.
DeLuca holds the baby they delivered as Meredith watches with a huge smile. Link, Tom, and Amelia just have to wait until their patient wakes up. Link invites Amelia out for sushi burritos, she agrees but asks for a minute first. She knows Tom thinks he is being brave, but that isn’t what happens here. Tom confronts her on being with this hunk who is a decent guy while she is still hung up on Owen Hunt. They both laugh as Amelia says she learned that life is about choices and sometimes there is an easier and softer way. Link is uncomplicated, which is so refreshing for her. She admits she is hung up on Owen and might always be but she is not using Link. She is choosing an easier path, suggesting he should try it.
Nico opens the computer when Levi walks in. Nico isn’t postponing his interview, but Levi had hoped they would after what happened today. Nico is beating himself up and doesn’t think he can call the hiring committee. Levi tries to comfort him, but Nico calls him a failure his entire life and that is Levi’s identity but that isn’t Nico’s life. He sits in front of his computer and begins his interview as Levi slams the door.
Maggie goes to one of the therapy rooms, joining Jackson who simply holds her hand, suggesting they go home and order in. Maggie wants to go home and crash there but Jackson says he loves her and doesn’t want to take it for granted, asking her to move in with him.
Owen wakes up to a message from Teddy after she got a message from Megan. He admits therapy was hard but it was good. Alex confronts Jo about drinking at work, he tells her this is done and they are not playing this game anymore. He suggests going to Pittsburgh to find out what happened to his wife. She stands up and says she will talk to him when she is ready and if he threatens to go to Pittsburgh again, she will leave him. He says if she comes to work drunk again he will tell Bailey. She agrees that it is a deal, walking away.
Meredith sits with her children and begins to explain why they saw Dr. DeLuca was there, admitting he is her boyfriend and she likes him a lot. They kids think it is gross that she would kiss him, he won’t sleep on the couch but will be coming around more. They all laugh and have fun
