The Passage begins tonight with Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney) who reveals how she now believes in monsters; the story doesn’t begin with her, but two lifelong friends who wanted to make the world a better place.
Bolivian Highlands, 2015
A group of men are walking with a Bolivian soldier with all of them being led to a cave where their guy is hiding. The military brings them inside where a young boy releases him from the cage, calling him a “Vampire”. Dr. Tim Fanning (Jamie McShane) is immediately attacked and gunfire erupts, chasing the beast away while Dr. Jonas Lear (Henry Ian Cusick) tries to help him. Later, sitting in the hospital, Lear realizes Tim is still alive, but Amy explains that death would have been better than what happened. Tim’s neck is healed and feels amazing, saying they have found what they are looking for and will change the world. Tim begins to spit out his teeth as Amy explains what they discovered in that cave is where “Project Noah” came from.
3 Years Later (Huntsville State Prison, Texas)
Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) visits inmate Anthony Carter (McKinley Belcher III), explaining Project Noah, saying it is a trial for a drug that is a cure for all diseases and they would like him to partake in the drug trial, taking him off of death row. Anthony doesn’t want the deal until Brad says he can give him an ocean of time, something he won’t have if he remains on death row.
Project Noah (Telluride, Colorado)
Amy talks about so many things that happened, as it was the perfect storm. They are discussing how the avian flu has gone airborne and intelligence has put the death toll at 15,000 and exposure time is 12 hours. If they can’t contain it, it will hit the US within 3 months. They are not nearly ready for their drugs but they go down to the cells where everyone is introduced to Tim Fanning (Patient Zero) by Dr. Daniel Pet (Alain Uy).
He reveals how they changed the formula with each inmate, they are still lethal but they are getting close to a cure. He brings them to Shauna Babcock (Brianne Howey) who is Patient 11. She took 28 days to decline but when she did, her appearance and the immune system is immune to everything; the problem is she is still a vampire and can rip your head off and drink all their bloods. Daniel says they need a younger patient to make it work when he learns Anthony Carter is 25, he feels that he isn’t young enough, suggesting they try this with a child.
Dr. Major Nichole Sykes (Caroline Chikezie) stands outside the facility when Clark Richards (Vincent Piazza) joins her, saying he knows where everyone is, as that is his job. She knows this is hideous but has to live with this as millions of people will die without it. He says it is feasible but they need to find a child who won’t leave a paper trail and no one will miss.
Amy is arm wrestling with some boys, who offer for her to go home with them for dinner, but she says her mom is expecting her. She then sits in a diner until they close, when she leaves she sees several police cars, revealing she was 10 years old the night her mommy died. She became the girl from nowhere – the one no one will miss. Her name is Amy Bellafonte and this is how the world ends!
Anthony Carter arrives at the facility, escorted by Brad. He is told the place used to be a hotel, but not offered any other explanation; Brad admits he doesn’t think about what happens to these psychopaths after they drop them off. Clark gives Brad a file, saying he has a different job for him and Brad tells him, “No problem!”
At the foster home, Amy is called inside as there are a couple men to see her. Brad and Agent Phil Doyle (Zach Appelman) tell Amy they believe her mom was exposed to some sort of toxin and the CDC wants her to see a specialist in Colorado. She questions them about why they didn’t send a lady but her foster mom tells her to pack up her things and go with the men. She wants money for the food Amy ate, which baffles Doyle. Brad catches Amy who is attempting to escape, they chase after her with the car; Brad watches the situation, disliking how much attention they gather.
Brad stops the car a few miles away and smashes Doyle’s head off the dash, saying if he hits the kid again he will shoot him in the face! Brad goes to talk to Amy, concerned for her. Clark calls and Brad wants to abort this one but Clark tells him this is non-negotiable. Brad demands to know why he needs a kid as Clark threatens him to not cross the people they work for, nor test him.
Benton, Arkansas
Brad and Doyle continue the trip with Amy but have to stop when Amy gets car sick. Amy says she doesn’t know if she is getting car sick or its from being kidnapped. He notices that her book, “A Wrinkle in Time” is a book from her mother who died 3 days ago. She calls her a stupid crackhead and wants to know where they are going. Brad says to a doctor in Colorado to make sure she is okay, but she knows he is lying. Doyle isn’t happy that Amy is taking the front seat but silently sits in the back.
Lear plays Tim’s favorite song, as he hopes they will be able to find him somewhere inside. One of the soldiers reveal Tim is very much alive, as he tells him he wants to go home and take him with him; but its only in his dreams. He admits that several of the soldiers are having nightmares. Daniel says the tests show they have no brain function as it is muscle reactions. He learns that Shauna was on death row for committing suicide and releases the blood to feed her, which she thoroughly enjoys. Tim and Shauna approach the glass and stare into the doctors’ faces; causing them to question everything.
Mineola, Texas
Amy is watching videos, telling Brad he got a text from Dr. Lila Kyle (Emmanuelle Chriqui). He says that Lila is his ex-wife; Amy reads it off that Lila has left several messages and is worried about him, he says he isn’t going to call her. They see a sign for a carnival where Brad offers to take her. Doyle questions Brad, reminding him that Amy is only cargo; but he says they are going in and meet back in an hour and a half.
Sykes returns home, finding Clark sitting in the living room; but she doesn’t want to talk about any of it. He grabs her and they were to kiss and undress after they have sex and lay in bed, he reveals the girl will be there in a day or two and her name is Amy. He believes this is going to work and everything will be okay. Clark kisses Sykes but then sees Shauna, who says she has been thinking of him all night and they were made for each other, but he shouldn’t have lied to her and will make it up to her later. Her teeth grow and just before she bites him, he is startled awake seeing Nichole lying beside him.
Brad and Amy are enjoying the carnival when he reveals he has great marksmanship from the Academy; she taunts him about how long ago that was. He picks up the gun, saying she needs to prepare to apologize for calling him old. They need 3 shots for her to win the unicorn and Brad hands her the gun, showing her how to shoot, believing she got it. The carnie tells them to hurry up as people are waiting, Brad says they can “suck it!” smiling at Amy. She hits target after target and chooses her unicorn.
Brad’s phone rings and it is Lila, where they talk briefly about their daughter as it has been three years. She reveals David asked her to marry him and she said yes; feeling she needs to move on and maybe have another baby. She doesn’t know what he needs to say, but it was a terrible thing that happened and it wasn’t his fault. He says he can’t come home, but she tells him to call if he needs her and hangs up.
Amy walks up, asking Brad if he is okay but Doyle arrives, saying it is time. Brad tells Amy to take a seat and they will be right back; in the bathroom, Brad puts Doyle in a chokehold and steals his weapon, leaving him behind in the bathroom. Brad says they are not going to Colorado, as it is a bad place but they need to go on the run from these people. Amy immediately says she trusts him and they take off.
Clark and Nichole learn they need to get this contained as they don’t want Brad Wolgast as a liability. Nichole worries about Brad being Clark’s friend, but he says it doesn’t matter. Meanwhile, Brad and Amy finally stop, where Amy is sleeping against the window. Brad looks at a photo in his wallet of him, Lila and their daughter; remembering the moment with lots of emotion. Brad wakes up Amy, puts his shirt on her, walking to the river saying its the perfect place for her to say goodbye to her mama.
Brad suggests she say something nice about her mother, besides being a junkie, hoping she can leave the anger behind as it is poison and hopes she can leave some of it at the riverside. Amy talks about a donut birthday cake and then her sleeping in bed with her mama. She tears up as she remembers her mom saying she was the joy of her life. Brad holds her as she cries.
Anthony Carter is quickly examined by Dr. Tim Fanning, who says he will be an excellent addition to this trial. Carter wants to know what is going to happen to him, but he notices that Tim is bleeding from his mouth and reveals that things are going to be bad, get really bad and then it will get worse but he will be with him the entire time. When things get better, it will be glorious; Carter is startled awake, chained to his bed, as Tim smiles.
Brad is purchasing things in the store when he notices that he is on the news, where people are claiming he abducted a child. Brad quickly calls Lila, saying stuff has come up and if Richards calls she is to say she hasn’t heard from him in months. Lila is able to cover that Richards is there and she believes he is telling the truth. She tells him that he might have 6 days of recovery and he admits he is trying to do the right thing. He says she is right about everything, he loves her and never stopped. Lila returns to tell Clark she hasn’t heard from him and she is sure there is an explanation but he needs to remember that Brad is his friend.
Brad returns to the car, telling Amy to not make this a habit. Brad notices a sheriff’s car, making Amy question what is happening. Brad says he is going to surrender, which will put her face on TV and keep her safe, as that is all that matters. He tells her she is wick smart, tough, funny and fast; she can do anything with her life as that is a fact, not his opinion. She is upset he is going to leave her but says she is ready to do this. Brad exits the vehicle and approaches the squad car with both Amy and Brad escorted to the police station.
Inside, Brad hears that the Department of Defense is on the phone for him; Brad tells Amy they need to get out of there and tells her where to get the keys for the handcuffs. She is able to uncuff him but the Sheriff tries to stop him with a gun. Brad takes the policeman to the back, but DOD shoots the sheriff as Brad returns to get Amy, telling her to stay with him and hides her behind the desk. Brad puts up a fight with one of the soldiers, able to get another gun and takes Amy with him; unfortunately, Clark points a gun at him, begging him not to do this. Brad demands an explanation as Clark says he will kill him if he doesn’t give him the girl.
Brad shoots the light and a fire extinguisher, able to steal a police cruiser and flee the scene. Amy realizes Brad was shot, but he insists he will be okay and orders her to put on her seatbelt. She sees all the cars coming up behind them. He tells her everything is going to be okay and promises he isn’t going to leave her. Amy narrates that of everything that happened, this is the part she thinks of the most and whatever was coming, they would face it together. He speeds up, ordering her to put her seatbelt on.
THE END!
