The Red Line begins tonight with Tia Young (Emayatzy Corinealdi) going to the prison but told she needs to change her “too revealing” top or she can’t come in. She is given a sweater from her husband, Ethan Young (Howard Charles); they are there to see Dwayne Bodwn (Al’Jaleel McGhee). After introductions, Tia explains she is running for Alderman against Nathan Gordon (Glynn Turman), revealing they know Dwayne is friends with is son, Corey from the neighborhood. She simply wants to know what happened to Dwayne and the hit n run.

He explains that Corey hot-wired a car, driving over 100 around the corner and hit a guy who was walking. He was never behind the wheel but got all the charges. He told his public defender that Corey was driving but the next day a Prosecutor came with a special deal, swearing Corey was in the passenger’s wheel; it gave him 4 years in prison, rather than 30. Tia can’t promise anything, she just wants to prove that the Gordons did this to him; hopefully shedding some light on his story. He talks about how the system likes to keep them in, wishing them good luck and walks away.

Daniel Calder (Noah Wyle) is at an art exhibition when he meets a couple of men, confirming that the photos he has are not from some pride event, and was told the one man’s name was Scoot (Mitchell Fain), a bartender he was with for a month. Daniel is concerned that the only person who can explain this isn’t here, but Daniel is reminded that 1 month doesn’t erase 20 years, but he assures them that it does!

Matthew Lee (Rammel Chan) encourages Charisse (McKenzie Chinn) to sneak in to see what her mother is all about on Saturday night. Meanwhile, Tia and Ethan work on organizing things but can’t get their focus off of Boden. Suzanne Davis (Enuka Okuma) walks in, saying she has a big present for her, revealing they are polling higher than they ever have and second, her sorority sister works at the State’s Attorney’s office and she was there, finding out that Amanda Sharpe was the prosecuting lawyer that offered Boden his deal; someone who has been endorsing Gordon for years, ever since she was elected; Tia feels this is just like Chicago – power players doing favors for power players; wondering what he gave her to do this. Suzanne advises her to play it smart.

Jira Calder-Brennan (Aliyah Royale) asks her dad, Daniel, if she could see her mom’s speech tomorrow but he reminds her that her mother made it very clear to keep the campaign away from the family as much as possible. She wants to sneak in from the back, simply watching and learning. He relents, making her promise to stay safe and not betray either one of their trusts. Daniel quietly walks into Liam Bhatt (Vinny Chhibber) classroom, both enjoying the other night and agreeing to do it again, but without the paper bag thing. They agree to meet tomorrow where there is a gay bar on every block.

Several people are gathered at a bar, taking shots. They learn that Paul Evans (Noel Fisher) is suing Daniel Calder as a countersuit for defamation and emotional distress. Vic Renna (Elizabeth Laidlaw) thinks it is a terrible idea while the others feel everything has gotten out of hand and someone needs to push back. Finn (Roberto Mantica) found the lawyer for Paul, but Finn feels that Calder will back off; Paul can get his life back and start thinking about his own life again. Someone spills their drink on Finn and a physical fight ensues, calling for police and an ambulance.

Daniel returns home, sorting through the mail when he sees several envelopes for Harrison Brennan; until his hand lands on a bigger envelope addressed to him. He takes off his wedding ring and throws it across the room.

Meanwhile, Jim calls out for Vic as Finn says she is right there like she has been the last 3 times. Gary Evans (Conor O’Farrell) is furious at the situation, telling Paul he is supposed to be looking out for his brother, but Vic comes to Paul’s defense. Abby (Caroline Neff) finally meets Gary as Paul says they have to go because it is late. Abby defends Paul’s actions before they leave to meet with the lawyer.

The church begins to fill up where Nate Gordon and Tia take their places, he hugs Tia saying, “just think you could have been working under me!” She is very put off.

Daniel sits with Liam, joking that the bar has no women wondering if lesbians became extinct. Daniel explains his childhood and how he was never comfortable at home. Suddenly, another table of men joins them, commenting on how cute they are. They talk about how various ideas when Liam admits he is Indian and also Muslim. They immediately give him problems saying you cannot be both; he and Daniel leave the bar. Liam explains that according to the world he doesn’t exist. His mom didn’t approve of his choices but she always showed that he was real. Daniel says he is real to him, maybe too real and kisses Liam in the park.

Tia has no problem diving for Nathan Gordon’s feet when it comes to changing the narrative. He says she may live in the six now, and talk about the struggle but she is an outsider. Everyone claps, but she suggests they should talk about the outsiders that are the cops that come to the six for target practice. Gordon says they need someone who works for the back people and Tia doesn’t even work with black people.

Daniel and Liam are getting busy in the house; Liam asking if he is sure he wants this as Daniel assures him he dies.

Back at the debate, Jira stands up to address Gordon, saying this is a debate but doesn’t give him the right to be rude and this whole time she has witnessed him disrespect Tia and everyone saw it. Ms. Young is qualified, inspiring, especially to girls like her. After witnessing his behavior how does he expect any woman to vote for him? He claims he never met any disrespect to Mrs. Young and has only been treating her like any man running for her position. Tia says that is interesting because when they shook hands he said she could have been working under him; asking if he would put a man in that position. The truth is people are who they are when no one else can hear. She can’t prove it because she’s the only one who heard it, but every woman has heard it before because powerful men think they can get away with anything they want.

The room silenced as Tia brings up Dwayne Boden, who served time in prison when he took the fall for the son of a powerful man and he is still there now; with circumstances making it virtually impossible for him to reenter society; like several other black men. No one cares, they elect these powerful men into their pockets. She cares about the people in the six because the people in the six care about each other.

Tia stands with Ethan, who is proud that she murdered Gordon, but watching him smugly greet people; Ethan says he is going to murder him! making Tia laugh. Nathan Gordon approaches her feeling she should be proud of herself with the old saying in Chicago politics is “do unto others before they do unto you” warning her to be prepared to be “unto.” Tia walks over to Jira, who says she was so brave today. Suzanne walks in between them, telling Jira that she is her aunt. Tia chastises Jira for being there and tells her to go home, without another word. Jira thought she was helping, Suzanne tells her she was great and sure her mom was proud of her.

Attorney Bev Connelly (Laura T. Fisher) shares that the Evans name goes a long way with her; the suit against Harrison Brennan family is ballsy but important. Abby feels it was a clean shoot. Bev says they have a long way to go, but first off, Paul is to have no more shiners as he needs to be spotless and needs people who can testify to his loss and damages; starting with his dad, as Gary Evans’ word carries more weight than anybody’s.

Daniel and Liam enjoy coffee, while Daniel confesses he hasn’t been with anyone since Harrison. He admits he found a photo of someone he didn’t know and it turns out Harrison has a “bartender;” something he found out very recently. Daniel says he feels better with Liam, but Liam questions what this is for Daniel, who doesn’t know what this is, but when he tries to explain, Liam throws his clothes at him.

Paul and Abby explain the situation to Gary, but Gary doesn’t think Paul is damaged whereas Jim is. Paul insists he is doing this for Jim (Michael Patrick Thorton). Gary thinks going to a lawyer to protect Paul is a “candy ass” move but Abby reminds him the whole world is after Jim and demands that Gary support Paul for once. Gary taunts her, wondering why she is so supportive because he surely can’t be that good in the sack. Paul tells his dad if he does that to Abby again, he will put him on the floor. His dad is proud that he hasn’t stood up to him like that in a long time, but Abby gets him to leave with her.

Daniel is back at home and opens the big envelope that has a videotape, saying Harrison’s surveillance.

In bed, Abby learns that Paul’s mom died of cancer, probably relieved that she didn’t have to deal with Gary anymore. Paul reveals that Jim always got the worst of it but since his dad always saw him as a mama’s boy he never escaped it either. Abby tells him the sooner he cuts his dad out of his life, the sooner he is free from him. Abby says she likes him because she likes people who try. He smiles, wondering where she’s come from.

Jira returns home, spots Daniel by the couch and wants to know what is wrong. He warns her that whatever on this tape could be a hoax, but they can’t take that chance as he needs to know what is on the tape before they even talk about her possibly watching it. Jira says she is staying in the room but understands. Daniel plays the tape, telling Jira it is real. It shows a man coming in a robbing a store, but when Harrison went to help the clerk, the police arrived thinking he was the shooter and they killed him. Daniel breaks down in Jira’s arms saying he was the one who sent him to get the milk.

Tia and Suzanne talk about how things are going to get harder since she really made Gordon mad today; both laughing as they feel they are going to kick that man’s ass. Suzanne is so proud that Tia said what she did, but she was a little harsh on Jira. Jira was fierce like her mother causing Ethan to agree with Suzanne. Tia is worried that Gordon saw them talking, Ethan said she maybe shouldn’t have but Jira deserved far more than the cold shoulder she gave her. Tia doesn’t respond when he admits he is a new fan because of the way she defended his wife.

Daniel meets with his lawyer about the countersuit from the Evans. The video shows that Evans lied and it could prove the CPD lied and conspired. Daniel is concerned if this is the proof he needs against the Evans. Jira sits in her room, rewatching the video and recording it on her phone before anyone can see what she is doing. Daniel jumps to the floor to find the ring he had thrown earlier while they both learn Jira put the video online as people need to know what happened and now they will. She wants Paul Evans to suffer!!

EPISODE 6 – We Turn Up This Music Louder Than a Mother’s Cry

The video has gone viral and inside the precinct, Paul Evans learns about the graphic video is unstoppable; the question is where is the video, who has it and who isn’t sharing all the facts. Daniel goes to a bar, meeting Finn; who knows who Daniel is. Daniel had a whole plan to confront him, but this all seems a little small now. He hands the pictures over to Finn, revealing Harrison had it in a book. Finn apologizes, saying Daniel can say whatever he wants. Finn sits with him, saying Harrison came there and it was nice to have someone who would listen. He never understood why he came in, he was just glad. He shares that they spoke about Daniel a lot saying Harrison said Daniel was the best husband he had ever known, but Daniel says he wasn’t. He only wants Harrison to come back so he can scream at him and then he can hold him. Finn tells Daniel to be kind to himself before he walks out of the bar.

Tia comes to see Jira, folding her hands she apologizes for being awful to Jira. Jira isn’t sorry for showing up, as Tia is put together and smart; all she wanted was to see her be her, hoping it would help Jira be strong. She cries, saying she isn’t strong causing Tia to take her into her arms and comfort her.

Paul returns home, telling his father, Gary that he has been suspended indefinitely without pay; the countersuit is dead so Gary doesn’t have to do anything. It looks bad because if they are lying about the tape, they are lying about everything. Vic Renna is also taken down with the scandal, but Gary says he should have taken the fall alone. Jim told him everything, but when Paul tries to go to bed, Gary starts hitting him and throws him into the fridge. Gary stumbles to the ground, clenching his chest as Paul just watches him suffer.

Jira and Daniel sit with the media as she holds a photo of Harrison, saying he is still her dad and Daniel’s husband; they are not trying to get past him. Jira pushes for the media to call it “murder” as Daniel says that when Officer Evans had a chance to give them any closure, he lied. He claimed Harrison was threatening the cashier and couldn’t tell if he was black. At this point his words are directed to State’s Attorney Amanda Sharpe, asking her to please do what is right and file murder charges as it is the right thing to do.

Tia has her own press conference as she wakes about the city, people suggesting it is a war zone in the six. She says this is a community, greeting people and responding well to her. The polls are a deadlock between her and Gordon, but she promises there is still work to be done. Even though Boden isn’t from the six, Tia feels that justice for families of people taken by police violence is everything for the six wards and she will fight for that; reminding them that Nathan Gordon hasn’t said a peep since the video was released, wondering if he is too busy cozying up to the State’s Attorney to pressure her to do the right thing. Tia suggests the alderman must have a good reason for not speaking out.

Daniel asks Jira to invite Tia over for dinner, so they could apologize. She promises to call her. Daniel calls Liam, leaving a message, promising to try later.

A priest, Father Joe meets with Jim, who explains it was not his fault. Paul comes in, thanking him for coming as Jim feels guilty that their father shouldn’t have been left alone. Gary already made arrangements as he wanted a full funeral mass, they need to select some songs and readings. Paul is asked to do that, but Jim will do the wake; they plan to do it in a couple of days. He attempts to hand Paul a book for possible readings, but Paul hesitates to cause Jim to ask if it would kill him to do anything for his dad. Father Joe tells Paul that his father loved him, but Paul tells him to save all that for Jim because the only thing Gary loved was being a cop. When the tape was released all his dad could think about was an Evans being a “bad cop.”

A memorial shrine grows outside the store where Harrison was murdered. Daniel gets a call from someone asking if Jira is there but when he asks who is calling; Daniel is warned that his daughter talks too much. He continues to threaten that he will sew her mouth shut and put a bag over her head and then they’ll see how much she talks.

Daniel walks with her, but she is used to hearing worse stuff at school. Daniel just wants to be careful because they don’t have the civil suit to fall back on. She rushes him, saying she doesn’t want to be late.

Jim is reminded that his father’s death is not on him. He may drink too much and be a little messy but this was not on him as his father was proud of him; reminding him to not make this another reason to hate himself. A sulking Paul returns with Abby, quicking grabbing a drunk. Jim is frustrated that Paul hasn’t gotten back to the priest, as Abby once again defends him saying Paul has a lot on his plate. Jim doesn’t care, saying he just has to do one thing!

Daniel hands out papers to his class when Matthew Lee comes on the announcements. He hands the microphone over to Jira. She says for the first time ever there is a real chance to prosecute her father’s killer if the State’s Attorney decides to file murder charges; all they have to do is show they care. She is announcing a student walkout, this Friday after 6th period to march for an end of police brutality. Daniel is shocked but impressed before Jira rushes out of the office.

Commander Redding (Guy Van Swearingen) walks in the Evans house to extremely loud music and Paul drinking beer; Jim comes wheeling out shouting that he told no one to turn it off. They are both told it isn’t the right time to hold a police wake for Gary; at least not in public. They need to consider the optics as Harrison’s daughter is planning some kind of protest and everyone is watching. Jim feels angry but they are told the whole city is pissed off that tape is doing a lot of damage. He doesn’t think they should be picking their fights right now and Commander isn’t pleased about it either as Gary Evans was natural police, deserving better than this; ordering the boys to have a private wake and keep it small. Paul questions whether their dad deserved better, turning up the music so he didn’t have to hear Jim anymore.

Daniel is called into a meeting, told the walkout Jira is planning cannot happen; not thinking about the safety of the students in the school. The counselor feels it is a worthy cause and they all understand that she wants to protest her father’s murder. Daniel tells them not to lecture them on his daughter’s safety when he got a threatening call towards her earlier, but can’t call the police as they are not exactly sympathetic to their problems. He is told he needs to talk to her about the big picture, but Daniel defends his daughter, saying she has a better grasp on the bigger picture than any of them will. He says if his daughter decides this walkout is happening, he will be next to her walking.

SA Sharpe meets with Tia, understanding how she needs to win her race but unfounded insinuations against Sharpe doesn’t benefit anyone. Tia disagrees but Sharpe says she is coming across as a desperate candidate; asking if she believes there is a single person in this city that has nothing to hide? Tia is told, “Nobody wants nobody that nobody sent!” Ordering Tia to stick to her issues in her district and keep Sharpe’s name out of her mouth.

Daniel walks in, apologizing for not being able to make dinner; but Tia felt she owed him an apology too. He is sorry for what he said but she says they can both say sorry, shaking hands. Jira tells Tia that she is planning a walkout on Friday making Tia question if the school is supporting that, revealing Daniel screamed at a district big wig, defending Jira’s honor. Daniel reveals they have gotten some threats but Tia says Jira is part of a legacy. Jira is nervous but this is for dad and she wants Tia to be there with her and Daniel; Tia admits that she did just get some new campaign sneakers. Daniel agrees to it as long as Jira doesn’t leave his side and she can’t run towards danger. Jira wants Tia to make a speech, not as her mom but for her campaign. Jira excitedly leaves to call Riley (JJ Hawkins) and Matthew.

Once she is gone, Daniel finds out that Tia has her own admirers who don’t want her speaking out against Harrison. He says she doesn’t need to make a speech but she tells him he doesn’t need to worry about it. When he is asked about the threat they got, he bites his lip so Tia holds his hand, promising they won’t let anything happen to her and he just needs to watch her take a stand as it will be beautiful.

At school, they are all informed any faculty or staff that participates in the walkout will be subject to review, and possibly disciplinary action including suspension and possible expulsion. They learn there will be security and police in place for safety. Liam is defiant, saying their students are their responsibility and for their safety, if they walk; he does too, all of the staff agree with him as Daniel mouths “thank you” to him.

Father Joe finds Paul sitting in the church, claiming he needed some air. He admits that Jim is filled with guilt as they all should be. He hands the book back to the priest, saying he couldn’t come up with anything, so the Father says he will find something in Corinthians. He knows there was no room for Paul in the house as Jim was loud and Paul is quiet, but they both eat themselves alive. He and everyone can see he is on a precipice, and whatever they say there is between him and God. Paul confesses that he killed him, just let him die. The priest misunderstands him, saying he has been suffering from this for the past 8 months and justified or not, he needs to ask God’s forgiveness to take a man’s life. Paul says he was simply doing his job but as he walks away; Father Joe tells him he is more like Gary than he knows.

Ethan finds Tia who is busy with paperwork. She is determined to find in files that Sharpe and Gordon are both dirty. She needs to be ready for when Amanda Sharpe comes for her. She knows the risks of going to the walkout but promises she will be smart of it. He says she is a good mom and Jira has put a fire in her. Tia thinks they should introduce her to Benny, as they are siblings; they both agree.

Announcements at school reveal anyone who participates in the walkout will be marked as truancy for the day, disciplinary action will be taken. Jira takes her coat and leaves the class, they walk to Daniel’s class and he asks his daughter if she is ready. He says she is his hero no matter how many others are behind her. The bell rings and every one student in his class is ready to follow; Jira takes her dad’s hand and they leave and they are definitely not alone, walking down the streets with her mother behind her. Students and teachers unite with the community joining as they walk further down the street. Jira marches for her dad and injustice while Tia says Amanda Sharpe needs do her job, which is to seek justice. They march pass the lines of police, who are holding back adults who are with the police. Suddenly several cars block the road and prevent the children and marchers from carrying on.

It becomes physical when Daniel asks if they were the ones threatening his daughter. Liam comes to his defense but when he is called a “terrorist” the fight begins. CPD immediately arrest Liam as Daniel yells that he didn’t do anything. Daniel tells Tia to take Jira to her place while he checks on Liam.

Daniel comes to the precinct but is given the runaround, told it has been a busy day and she won’t have the name until he is processed which could be a while and suggests that Daniel goes home. He refuses, sitting in front of her desk he waits.

Paul sits in front of a memorial wreath when Abby walks in. She is impressed that he set everything up by himself as he is stressed, not knowing when this will ever end. She promises him they will get through it as he says he needs to tell her something. He admits to being there when Gary died, in the same room. He was so angry, worse than usual, threatening to hit him. He was clenching his chest, blaming him.

Before he can continue Abby tells him not to say it because everyone in her life can’t understand why she is with Paul Evans, but she always defended him saying he wasn’t what they thought and is a great guy. Abby says it’s her job to help people and that is what he is supposed to do; that is what a good guy does. He needs her but she feels she needs to go and there is nothing he can do.

Jira watches the news over how the march turned violent; Tia tells her not to let that get into her head and she is proud of her. Jira feels this might have been for nothing, it all comes down to the SA, and she definitely gave her a lot to think about. Benny walks in with Ethan, who also conferred with Daniel that it was time for Jira to meet her little brother. Tia explains how she had Jira a long time ago, but she wasn’t ready to be a mommy yet so another family adopted her and she is their daughter too. Jira cries as Tia tells Benny that she now wants to know their family too. Benny asks if she likes comics as Jira admits she is a nerd and would love to see his room.

Daniel waits and waits, making phone calls before Liam is finally released. He hasn’t been charged with anything, but was held 10 hours because he was Muslim, brown and gay who was protesting the police; that is why they could hold him. Liam wanted to be there but Daniel attempts to apologize, saying he was selfish and Liam is the last person he wants to hurt. Liam knows there is no room for him and Daniel isn’t ready. Liam says the problem is he is not allowed to want anything because he can’t ask Daniel for anything. He can’t get angry over what happened to Daniel and Harrison but Daniel cannot give him anything and that is why they need to go to their respective places alone.

Daniel tells Jira that Liam is not being charged, thanking Tia for watching over her. Liam and Daniel got suspended but Tia shows them the front page of the paper, saying this picture is going to be hard for the SA to deny; it says “Student Demonstration Roiled by Violence” and it is a CPD officer with a baton holding Liam down on the hood of a cruiser. Daniel can’t look at it but Tia says they need the world to.

The wake happens for Gary Evans, officers drinking and celebrating him inside the house. Vic learns Abby isn’t there due to their break. Jim gives a few words, saying he was a mean drunk, bad husband but a great cop. Up to the day he died, he gave his family everything he could. He wasn’t the “I love you” type, but he showed it. He pushed them to be better and he will be missed; everyone toasts. Paul claps, toasting to his dad. He says his dad was everything Paul was supposed to be and never let anyone forget that; Gary Evans’ way or it wasn’t happening. Paul feels everyone there things he is a good man but he really wasn’t. He was a bully to his mom, Paul and Jim until Jim got hurt on the job. Vic tries to take him away but he knows he is pissing everyone off. Gary Evans was a cruel man who never asked for forgiveness and got away with everything. Paul admits he won’t miss him nor trying to impress him as he can rot in hell. Laughing he says maybe Gary is atoning now as he was told it’s never too late. Jim smashes his bottle, saying their dad was right and Paul was a total disgrace.

Paul sits in his car hearing breaking news that SA Amanda Sharpe is meeting with a grand jury to indict Paul Evans in the shooting death of Dr. Harrison Brennan after the video was leaked. Paul starts screaming in his car, smashing the steering wheel.

Daniel and Jira also see the news, celebrating that Jira did this and made it happen for her dad. Car lights flash in front of their house. Tia is confronted at her doorstep with media wanting her reaction, but she quickly learns they are talking about her being Jira’s mother; completely shocking her of concealing the truth and ruining her credibility with the voters.

THE END!
