The Village begins with Patricia (Lorraine Toussaint) rising up from her chair on the rooftop while Nick (Warren Clarke) wakes up on the floor beside his bed. Sarah (Michaela McManus) is still in bed with her pregnant teen daughter, Katie (Grace Van Dien), simply staring at her. Patricia comes down the stairs just as Gabe’s (Daren Kagasoff) girlfriend wants to make love to him, only to discover it is his father, Enzo (Dominic Chianese) who is under the covers. Patricia walks in to find Ron (Frankie Faison) dancing, she briefly joins him before leading him away from the living room.
Ben (Jerod Haynes) continues to work with young Sami (Ethan Maher), as his mother is still being held by ICE. Nick takes his dog, out for a walk as Sarah and Katie talk about her pregnancy. She admits missing being little and her mother making her decisions. She says they need to go to the doctor today and talk options, but Katie has to dash to the bathroom due to morning sickness.
Nick takes his dog to the waterfront, where he asks him to stay there while he attempts to job; but isn’t able to get far and the dog whines. Outside, Sarah and Katie spot a limping Nick, Sarah immediately helps him while Katie takes the dog. Nick and Sarah reminisce about how her helping him is payback, but she reveals that night he helped her with her sprained ankle is the night she got “grounded” for 17 years. They quickly curb their conversation at the steps where Katie is sitting; she tells Nick that with him living there, he is family.
Katie is at the nursing home playing cards with one of the residents who is extremely judgmental when she learns Sarah is her mother, not sister. Sarah says they can see the OB during lunch, but she doesn’t need to make a decision right now. She promises to reveal why she kept Katie, just not at that moment since this is her choice to make.
Enzo isn’t happy his stuff is in storage and that Gabe doesn’t make espresso. Gabe’s girlfriend is worried that he is letting people take advantage of him and reminds him of the big test he has that morning. Gabe admits he is missing it as he is standing up for a neighbor, Ava (Moran Atias) who got picked up by ICE. He promises to find a way to get to everything, but she is unconvinced. Enzo tells Gabe that his Nona wouldn’t have liked her.
Gabe asks Patricia for a favor, who goes to see Ava presenting her with all the forged documents her husband used to get her asylum in the US. Patricia suggests they simply focus on today and that she is not a flight risk, and can fight this from home. Patricia tells her it is never too late to tell the truth, especially about her abusive husband.
Sarah learns during the ultrasound that Katie is 14 weeks pregnant, the OB leaves so they can talk. Katie confesses she knew 7 weeks ago, but she cannot do what Sarah is hoping for her to do. Katie feels pressured from Sarah, who really has no expectations with it. She does learn from Katie that she didn’t tell her until yesterday because the day Sarah told her mother she was pregnant with Katie, is the day she lost her mother and she only wanted one more day.
Enzo gets dressed to go out, talking to a photo of his wife; hoping Bernie is showing her a good time in heaven. He runs into Nick using the crutches down the stairs; Enzo offers him a ride, but they end up on the seniors’ bus. Enzo says he can be a handful at the nursing home and is allowed overnights. He hands Nick back his credit card, who says it was his pleasure to pay for them to have a real send off for their Naval friend, Bernie. Nick opens up about the heroes he lost recently too; Enzo tells him he better make it a good life now since they died saving him and Nick is living for all of them now.
Ben and Sami are at the waterfront, attempting to skip rocks while Ava sets up her cot. Katie pleads with her mother to talk to her, but Sarah tells her to go pick up her prenatal medications. Sarah finally shouts that she isn’t looking at Katie because she doesn’t know who she is looking at. Katie lied, and Sarah feels stupid. Katie tells her that Jagger is the father of the baby and they won’t be dancing this one away. Katie leaves to help Ron as Sarah promises to pick her up after work.
Nick walks into the bar where he is introduced to Joe (Kurt Yaeger), who also lost a leg during the war. They all sit down, toasting to “all the missing pieces”. Ron laughs when Nick keeps insisting that he doesn’t work there. Ron runs out of army jokes and decides to leave, telling Nick what he needs to do if someone comes in; he is invited to go to a meeting, only saying he’ll think of it. Nick wants to go see Cooper’s widow, but he is told not to as it was his mistake that got Cooper killed.
Ava makes a call, saying she never said anything but that man swore this wouldn’t happen to her. Ava is called away.
Enzo returns to his room, where he doesn’t want the other man staying there, calling him a “Whining Wop” and orders him to get out of his room. Sarah arrives at the desk to find a box of pastries from John, Bernie’s grandson. Enzo rushes over, saying he has an emergency and it is sacred space. Sarah says there is nothing she can do to stop this; tears up and tells him that Katie is pregnant and lied to her about it.
Enzo takes Sarah outside, trying to find a valium for her. Enzo says his son, Gabriel threw everything away and who has the right to say what time is right ever? Sarah admits that it’s not Katie who lost her, but the other way around.
Enzo calls Gabe, complaining about his new roommate, but just before he hands up, Enzo encourages his son to “Go get him!” Gabe tells Ava she does have good representation but the bad news is the judge has a son who was an NYPD Officer that was knifed by an illegal immigrant. Ava swears she wouldn’t run as she has a son is in school and couldn’t even afford to flee. The Judge orders Gabe not to speak, but Officer Ben Jones walks in admitting he lives in the same building as Ava for the past 2 years, she is a teacher and mother to a great little boy. He knows she is a great person, as she took care of him during a very low point in his life and she is as good as her word and there’s a cop in the building. The Judge grants bond, asking Ben to keep an eye on her.
Ben meets with Ava, telling her that they have one minute, but he can tell her about Sami. Today is a win as she is going to get out. Ben admits that Sami isn’t really talking to him, but is willing to give anything a go to help Sami. Her time is almost up, but Ben pulls out his phone with an idea.
Nick is shocked Sarah allows Katie to work at a bar. She admits she is too young to serve alcohol but she helps out for the extra cash. She knows they need the military but they also have drones that drop bombs on wedding parties. Nick wants to know what Katie would do if she knew about someone who created bombs and has the know how to kill hundreds of people. She says she would wait for him to walk away, but Nick says she might get lucky or one of those kids have 10 different identical cars that can kill thousands; which kid are you responsible for now? Katie says “just one, that she really wishes she was bringing into a nicer world!” Nick is shocked, as Katie says Sarah can’t even look at her. Katie admits she no longer is with the boy; but when Nick asks her if she has told the boy, believing her mom thinks it is a bad idea, Sarah interrupts them and takes Katie away.
Ben joins Sami in his room, pulls out his phone saying it is time for his song; and lucky for him Ben isn’t the one singing it. Ben says his mom, Ava is coming home soon and thought he would give little Sami a preview of Ava and her love for him.
Ron feels it wouldn’t be responsible to pay the $10,000 bond for Ava. Ron promises that the bar will pick up, but they both laugh at it. Patricia has an idea of her own to help Ava, saying cancer came back; halting their entire conversation.
Gabe asks Sarah to get his dad another roommate. She knows Malcolm Moore is an instigator, but it is communal living and everyone drives each other nuts; Enzo was lucky he got to live with Bernie for as long as he did, plus a wife he loved dearly. He should be grateful for the life he has lived. Gabe’s girlfriend tries to get him into the apartment to show him how nice it is to live alone, but he doesn’t go with her.
Sarah walks into Nick’s place, telling him that he isn’t allowed to give Katie advice and not make this conflicted. Nick insists she doesn’t know if things would have been different if she told him about Katie. Nick reminds her that she gave him an ultimatum and he chose war over her! He saw horrible things and is angry, but he chose war. Sarah put in 17 years alone as Nick scoffs that she still has the martyr part down. Nick insists he is not an alcoholic and doesn’t know if he has PTSD, but he does get uneasy with things; how is that make him a bad father? Sarah feels that Katie will hate her if she tells her the truth, but Nick is sure Katie will hate him too – a conversation Ron hears. Sarah tells him he has only known about Katie for 3 weeks, but she has known for 17 years, so he will still be the hero.
Sarah sits with Katie, saying she was conceived after 9-11 and nothing made sense. Sarah says the guy wanted to be a firefighter since he was a little boy but when he was working at ground zero; his mind changed and he left. Sarah was devastated, but as she kept seeing those towers fall on the news, she couldn’t get it out of her head that she had to do something radically good in the victims’ memories. She couldn’t crochet a heart, but she gave birth to hers at 18. She tells Katie that she is her radical good thing and she orders her to look at her. Katie will always be her good thing.
Sarah gets up, turns on some music and says in this family when there are problems, they dance. She grabs Katie’s hand and together the mother and daughter have a dance-off in the living room.
Patricia washes up as Ron joins her in the bathroom, surrounding her with his big arms and love. Gabe wakes up Enzo, saying he is taking him home as he is going to live with him. Gabe unplugs the TV, helping his dad taunt the roommate. Ben comes in and sees Sami shooting some hoops in the room and together they finally laugh and cheer together, celebrating.
Nick sits on his staircase and looks at a folded photo that says, “Sarah has a 10 yr old. Yours??” He sits lonely on the iron stairs.
THE END!
