She tells Katie she needs to keep her strength up as she needs to talk to her mother but Katie was going to move the rest of her stuff into their place.
Patricia reminds her that she has been there for a week, but Katie complains that her mother, Sarah Campbell (Michaela McManus) kept the truth about her father a secret for 17 years and she is lucky she didn’t call child services on her. Gabe has one month until he graduates and he can handle the internship at his father’s firm. Enzo reminds him that one month is vital to someone who is looking at being sent to another country.
Katie tells Sarah not to look so awkward as she tells her mother that the place has a playroom in the basement that is the size of their entire apartment. Katie orders her mother to stop crying because the potential parents won’t put themselves through this if she sees them wavering. They agree on the adoption but Sarah demands that they speak after this meeting; Katie is still furious that she could forgive Nick for leaving her when she was pregnant and a guilty Sarah tells her that Nick never knew she was pregnant. Her confession leaves Katie even angrier, telling her mother she hates her. Claire and Max arrive, hugging Sarah immediately.
Ron voices his concern that his son, Gordon (Guy Lockard) is vindictive and that is why he drove Olivia directly into their arms. He wants to know which side Patricia is taking, she would love to take Katie in, but taking in Olivia is a powder keg. She suggests she will talk to Olivia as Ron goes to speak to Gordon.

He is trying to prove a point by lying to her about wanting to only be friends. Sarah knocks on Nick’s door, telling him that she told Katie the truth, she feels Katie should hate her from keeping her from her father. She was afraid to tell him because she worried he would only stay for her; admitting she couldn’t love him. He pulls her into a kiss in the doorway, pulling her into his apartment and they make love again.
Nick tells Sarah about having another moment when a loud noise spooked him. He saw Rashad, but can’t figure out how none of his team seems to remember him. She promises they will figure this out, holding his hand. He wants to know how it is fair that he is all beat up and she looks great; she suggests making him feel young again. The buzzer sounds as Nick complains about them to go away, but it is Katie. Sarah sneaks out of the window to the fire escape while Nick goes to answer the door.
Neither one of them expecting to see each other, he invites her in, both sitting on the couch not knowing what to say to each other. He says, “long time no see” and can’t come up with anything else, as his talents lie elsewhere. Katie begins to ask him questions, him admitting that he loved Sarah and they were together for a year. When asked why he broke up with her, Nick confesses that he felt he had a duty. Katie learns that if Nick knew about her, he would have stayed. Gordon didn’t kick her out because she is gay, they didn’t approve of her coming home drunk and smelling of pot and stole money from them. Olivia overhears them, wanting to know if they are taking Gordon’s side. She tells them to forget it and she will find another place to stay, rushing out the door.

Sarah says Katie is handling this remarkably well, but Claire reminds her that the baby is her grandchild, offering her to share a bottle of wine. Katie and Nick cook in the kitchen, talking about their favorite stuff; thoroughly enjoying each other’s company. He jokes that she stereotyped him, put him in a box but he is a hopeless romantic. Katie says she is too, asking for a bandage as she cut her hand. She walks to the bathroom, finding Nick’s helmet and trying it on and staring in the mirror. She eventually puts it back finding a photo of her and her mother, saying “Sarah has a 10-year-old. Yours?” Katie takes the picture and bolts out of his apartment without saying a word to Nick. She barges into her mom’s apartment, saying she isn’t there for long. She feels Nick doesn’t care, saying she was ten in the photo and it was among his things. Sarah tells Nick he doesn’t deserve her as he tries to explain he was in a different world. Patricia asks Nick what he has done.
Gabe sits on the front stoop where Sofia finds him. She reveals she didn’t see that coming, but she didn’t need her deposition into a grand gesture. She says his father is wrong as he is smart and driven, lawyers will see that. Gabe smiles saying people become lawyers to get justice or to get paid, just hoping his dad would see him. Sofia says she sees him and they kiss, Gabe, saying he wanted to do that for a long time. She says she did it so he doesn’t get credit, he leans in to kiss her again, asking if he will get credit for that one.
