Night 2 of the Knockouts was brutal! The judges all wanted to trim down their respective teams until just the best of the best remained and yet the trimming process was hard on them as well. They didn’t want to eliminate anyone. They would have kept their whole team together if it had been possible, so again the Knockouts were brutal and just because they happened to be more brutal on the judges than the contestants didn’t take away from the artistry of the night.
There was a lot of great music out there tonight. Take the first pairing. They were from Team John and he paired off Khalea against James. James has been his Steal from Team Gwen and she still hasn’t forgiven him for it. She holding onto her grudge as James was out here taking risks. He chose the song “Stay” by Post Malone. The song was a great fit for him and so all he needed to do was add some flair to it.
His coach wanted him to add a high note to the end because he knew it would leave an impression. The strength of the song was in its nuances and that meant James couldn’t keep his eyes close or go wandering around the stage. He had to hold his position firm as he hit that high note else his voice would have wobbled. So, James soon came around. He got to where he needed to because of his coach and John went on to do the same with Khalea.
John had wanted something different from Khalea. She chose the song “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion and the song lacked emotion on her part. She was great at the execution of it, but it sounded like she was merely reciting the music and not actually singing it. John and his advisor Taylor Swift had needed to get Khalea out of her head. She had the voice for this song and so all she needed to remember was to pour the emotion in there as well.
Khalea went on to do a great job on stage. She was also the clear winner in her battle because James’s best performance couldn’t be her best performance. John ended up choosing Khalea for his team. He couldn’t have made any other choice and unfortunately, this was James’s last night because no one chose to “Stea”l him. Afterward, it was onto the next pairing. The next two hailed from Team Gwen. She paired off Jessie and Kyndal.
Jessie chose the song ”Dancing With A Stranger” by Sam Smith. His coach tonight merely helped fine-tune a strong performance. Jessie was really great in knowing what to do with his voice and so he didn’t need much coaching and neither did Kyndal. Kyndal chose the song “Elastic Heart” by Sia which was crazy because Sia first sent the song to someone else and the song had been rejected because they said, “no, this is your song”. And they were right.
This song has become synonymous with Sia’s voice. It was bound to be hard for anyone covering the song and that’s what Gwent thought when Kyndal selected it. Then she heard Kyndal sing it. Kyndal did her own rearrangement of the song and it was a great fit for her voice. She even sounded a bit like Sia towards the end. She also won her round because she stayed true to her voice even if it meant her voice had cracked a little in the middle.
Her voice doing that was considered a plus for her. Kyndal was a rare one and Gwen chose her over Jessie. Then no one chose to save Jessie. He was eliminated tonight and soon it was onto to the next one. The next pairing was from Team Blake. Blake decided to put together his powerhouses and so he paired Joana off with Ricky. Both were unique and they could hit those high notes like no one else. Blake knew he would get a great battle out of the two. This also the perfect example of how this was going to be because neither of them deserved to be eliminated.
Joana chose the song “California Dreamin” by The Mamas and The Papas. The song was a strong choice for her and she did rise to the occasion. She sang the song beautifully. It just wasn’t enough compared to Ricky. Ricky chose the song “She Talks to Angels” by The Black Crowes. He picked the song because he was told once his voice sounded like the lead guitarist from the Black Crowes and it had been a great selection on his part.
The song resonated with him because it happened to be his girlfriend’s favorite song. He also had Blake and Taylor guiding him into rocker mode. He was originally going to slow down the song when he was told his voice could do more. His coach told him to lean into the harsher edges of his voice and one he did – it became magic. The judges had all loved his performance and it was an easy choice for Blake.
Blake chose Ricky and thankfully Gwen was there to Steal Joana. So, win-win!
THE END!
