The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that several characters are facing major overhauls. Now that Y&R has a new regime running the show, they’re making positive changes to steer the story where they want it to go. The perfect example of that is Summer Abbott (Hunter King) and her newfound maturity.
Summer was a manipulative, nasty nightmare in the weeks leading up to Lola Rosales’ (Sasha Calle) attack and the eventual transplant surgery. Roping Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) into a marriage sham was certainly cruel move. Summer used her own liver as leverage and forced Kyle to marry her if he wanted to save Lola Rosales’ (Sasha Calle) life. It may have been Kyle’s idea, but Summer made her terms crystal clear in the end.
However, a funny thing happened right around the time “Skyle” tied the knot. We began to see vulnerability in Summer and the capacity for love rather than just obsession. The circumstances that sparked this marriage weren’t ideal, but Summer has at least been understanding of Kyle’s feelings for Lola. She didn’t blow her top when she realized Kyle nearly had sex with his ex.
Instead, Summer has tried to be patient and show Kyle that he really matters to her. She’s doing everything she can to prove their love is the real deal. It may be working since Kyle seems so reluctant to break things off. Part of Kyle is worried about Summer seeking revenge, but another part of him surely just doesn’t want to see Summer devastated.
Of course, Summer also showed great remorse in her latest scenes with Phyllis Summers (Gina Tognoni). She admitted that her pursuit of Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) was cringeworthy and awful. Summer’s truly sorry and ashamed for sleeping with the man her mom loved.
Hunter King is doing a great job at playing this softer side of Summer and undoing some of the damage that had been done through the writing. Nevertheless, some viewers may not be willing to forgive and forget. Summer’s definitely made her fair share of mistakes, so plenty of people out there may hold them against her indefinitely.
On Twitter, The Young and the Restless watchers have been weighing in on their true feelings. “Summer will always be trash,” one resolute fan said. “Summer is pathetic,” said another.
On the flip side, some Y&R viewers have definitely been won over. “Kudos to the writers for forcing me to do a 180 on Summer,” one fan admitted. “I feel for her now and want her to be happy.” Another Young and the Restless watcher talked about “fully embracing new changed Summer.”
