Life had changed! Los Angeles was shut down because of the pandemic. The governor encouraged people to stay at home because of the disease that was running rampant and so everyone was stuck at home, but unfortunately, this was creating a backlog. There were trials that were being pushed back. It was creating more work for the lawyer and judges. Judge Lola Carmichael was worried about people that were on the docket and she had talked about it with her good friend Mark. Mark was going stir-crazy with being at home. He couldn’t go to the gym and so he was working out at home. He was also keeping in contact with his girlfriend who was stuck at her own home as well.

This shelter-in-place order had separated everyone. They were all stuck at home and most of them were alone. It was the loneliness that was creeping upon them. It was making them desperate for human connection and so Lola was happy when she spoke to Benner. Benner had told her that cops were still making arrests. The backlog was getting out of control and so Lola made her suggested. Lola suggested that they try their cases via cameras. Lola was thinking about what the founders intended. She believed they would want justice to be served no matter what and that’s why she trying to do with her caseload.

Lola wanted to hear the cases out. She talked to Benner, Laski, Campbell, and Delgado. She told them what she wanted to do and naturally, they had some misgivings. They thought defendants deserved a genuine trial and a jury. Neither of which they would receive if they went ahead with Lola’s plan. Only Lola still thought they should go ahead with video trials. She told her fellow judges that it was the only way they could get on top of the backlog and so she eventually wore everyone else down. Lola’s plan was later approved. She went ahead and she judged Kurt Beto’s case. He was someone with a criminal past and he was accused of carjacking a vehicle from his brother Joey Beto.

Lola gave Kurt a hearing. His lawyer was Emily and she claims that the carjacking incident was a family dispute that got out of control. Emily was going up against Mark. Mark claimed that Kurt was a violent man and that he turned against his brother who didn’t have a record and so Mark believed Kurt should stay in jail. Mark and Emily both pleaded their cases to Lola. She heard them both out and she decided to go through with her virtual trial. She told Emily and Mark what she meant by a virtual trial. She also told them to start working on their cases. This was a little hard for Emily because she was staying with family and her nephews were plaguing her.

Mark was also dealing with some stress. He has his boss DDA Choi breathing down his neck. Choi wanted Mark to win this virtual trial because it was the first of its kind and he wanted to turn this case into an example. So, Mark couldn’t lose. Mark had to win and he couldn’t let anything distract him. He’s been having video sex with his girlfriend Quinn and he had to put that on pause. He also did his best to talk down Luke. Luke wanted to visit the prisons because he felt like he had to do something and so Mark and Choi told Luke what a mistake that was. They told him to stay at home because he wasn’t going to be much help anyway.

This was also one of the first cases Mark has ever had in Lola’s court. Lola couldn’t show him any preferential treatment and she had warned him about this. They talked about it beforehand. Lola agreed not to give him the “look” when he’s doing something stupid and he had to promised not to make her laugh. This virtual trial had to be flawless. It was Kurt Beto vs the People. Kurt’s girlfriend is pregnant and she wanted him home. Kurt’s lawyer Emily and the others had to learn how the virtual trial would work out. They all got dressed for court and they tried to act like it was a normal day at work. Things were going fine until Kurt’s brother Joey gave his testimony.

Kurt had wanted to intervene. He felt his brother was lying about what happened and he demanded his lawyer say something. Emily had to tell him to calm down. She already had enough on her plate with watching everything Mark said and Mark later tried to pull the friend card with Lola. He even called her Lola in a virtual court. Sherri had to call him out on it and she demanded that he be professional. The first day of the virtual trial was basically everyone trying to talk over each other. It did not go as planned and so everyone hoped for the best with Day 2. And in the meantime, they decompressed.

Lola settled up with a glass of wine. She talked to her good friend Rachel later on. Emily spoke with her boyfriend Luke. Mark talked with his girlfriend Quinn and he suggested to him that they spend quarantine together. It would mean they would move in together for possibly months. It would also be a huge step in their relationship and so Quinn wasn’t sure if she wanted to go there with him. Then there was Day 2 of the trial. Mark and Emily were constantly speaking over each other and it was the same with the defendant. Kurt came to hate virtual trials. He wanted a real trial and he didn’t care that waved away his rights. He wanted those rights back and he wanted them now.

But it was too late for him. He agreed to a virtual trial and Mark made his case about going ahead in spite of the defendant’s wishes. Emily tried to speak up for her client. She made it clear that her client wanted a traditional jury and so Lola had to put her foot down. Lola spoke to everyone in the courtroom. She even got through to Joey Beto. He later changed his tune and he didn’t want to press charges against his brother. He told Mark and Mark agreed to let Kurt off on time served. Kurt would be released from prison that very same day. He now just has to worry about his upcoming baby and following his probation for the next two years.

Kurt went home to his family. He later thanked Emily for all she did for him and Emily was so happy that it spilled over into her conversation with Luke. They enjoyed a wine date. Lola and Mark meanwhile moved past what happened in their courtroom. She never wanted to try one of his cases again and their friendship was still intact.

Luke also helped out the prisoners that were being released. He knew some of them didn’t know where to go now that this pandemic was in full effect and so he assisted those recently released. He also relied on his good friend/ coworker Sam’s assistance.

And Quinn later decided to move in with Mark and so they’ll be spending this quarantine together.

THE END!
