Days of Our Lives (DOOL) spoilers reveal that Camila Banus (Gabi Hernandez DiMera) is speaking out about her exit from DOOL as well as her upcoming return. Days fans have been curious about Banus’ decision to leave and then come back, so let’s see what she had to say in her own words. In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, Banus offered her side of the story.
Banus pointed to a couple different reasons for leaving, including the fact that she was involved in so many stories at the same time. The Days of Our Lives star suggested it was a ton of work to juggle all those scripts, hours and long days on set. It left Banus needing a breather when she made the decision to exit DOOL.
“I was just like, ‘I need a mental reset. My body needs a reset,’” Banus said. She went on to talk about another reason for her departure, which involved the desire to do something else creatively. Unfortunately, that part hit a roadblock due to the pandemic, which effectively shut down the film and television industry.
Although Banus was open to all different kinds of projects, the shutdown presented a problem. Banus thought she’d still be able to self-tape and book some gigs, but that plan didn’t pan out either.
“When that didn’t happen, when things really, really closed down, in my mind, I’m thinking, ‘Well, no, I still have to act. This is a part of me, this is part of my body, part of my soul,’” Banus said.
That’s when Banus decided she wanted to get back in front of the camera and hopefully back on Days. Banus, her management company and DOOL all had some back and forth before she signed on to return. “I need them,” Banus admitted. “They’re my family, they’re my home.”
We should mention that Banus posted an emotional Instagram story earlier this year – right around the time Chandler Massey (Will Horton), Freddie Smith (Sonny Kiriakis) and Galen Gering (Rafe Hernandez) were let go.
Banus’ video talked about how important it was to fight for what you’re worth, which led to speculation that a pay cut was another factor in her decision to leave. Days insiders insist that was the case, but Banus didn’t address money specifically in this new interview.
There’s no sign of Banus being back on set just yet, which makes sense considering Days already had 30-40 scripts ready to shoot when they returned. The writers didn’t know Banus would be returning, so she wasn’t included in those. As a result, it’ll take until later this year to put Gabi in the mix again.
Nevertheless, Banus is indeed poised to reprise the role of Gabi Hernandez DiMera and eventually continue Gabi’s messy love story with Jake Lambert (Brandon Barash). That’s something exciting to look forward to, so we’ll give you updates as other DOOL news comes in!
