Days of Our Lives (DOOL) spoilers tease that Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) will be flying solo when she returns to Salem this summer. Lucas Horton (Bryan Dattilo) mentioned that EJ DiMera (last played by James Scott) had another setback in Italy, so we know EJ won’t be well enough to accompany Sami.
Allie Horton (Lindsay Arnold) also pointed out that EJ was where most of Sami’s attention went. Sami’s been doing her best to support EJ and get him back to the powerful, confident DiMera he used to be.
Of course, some Days fans may be wondering what the delay is on EJ’s return. What’s with all the setbacks? Why are DOOL writers refusing to let EJ fully recover?
EJ is an incredibly popular character, but James Scott isn’t interested in reprising the part. Days obviously knows this and kept it in mind when they gave EJ severe burns in the warehouse fire. Kayla Brady (Mary Beth Evans) even acknowledged that EJ probably wouldn’t look the same once the bandages were removed. It was a clear setup for the role to be recast someday.
However, some Days of Our Lives viewers are starting to worry someday may never come! DOOL certainly hasn’t been in a hurry to bring EJ back, but we’d say there are some great reasons why. Let’s discuss them before we think about when EJ might actually reenter the picture.
For starters, filling James Scott’s shoes is undoubtedly a tricky task. In the past, there have been casting calls that seemed like they might’ve been looking for a new EJ before scrapping the plan.
It’s possible Days just hasn’t been able to nail down just the right actor. They may think they should hold off until they have someone worthy of replacing Scott in the role.
We also have to look at what’s happening on canvas. There’ll be plenty of drama for Sami to contend with due to pregnant Allie and her adoption plan. EJ honestly just isn’t needed right this very moment.
Sami, Allie, Lucas, Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow), Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall), Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan), Nicole Walker (Arianne Zucker), Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering), Will Horton (Chandler Massey) and Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith) are all going to be involved.
There are more than enough characters for Sami to interact with, so it’s easy to see why EJ’s sitting this one out.
Plus, we’ve already got Jake Lambert (Brandon Barash), who will most likely be revealed as Stefan DiMera (Brandon Barash). Stefan can fill the DiMera swagger void sooner or later. Philip Kiriakis (Jay Kenneth Johnson) is also headed back to Salem, so that’s another charming leading man in the mix.
If EJ returned now, there wouldn’t be much airtime for him. An EJ recast would be a huge deal for the show, so they definitely want to wait until he can take center stage.
Nevertheless, Days undid EJ’s death for a reason. EJ will surely recover and return to Salem at some point, so it’s still something to look forward to. We just have to be patient!
