Days of Our Lives (DOOL) spoilers reveal that the NBC soap had an extra challenge to tackle before returning to work. DOOL is now back in production with plenty of testing and safety protocols to protect the cast and crew. However, there was a major writing issue that had to be addressed before this production restart. We’ll explain so you’ll know what to expect down the road.
When Days was forced to suspend production back in March, they still had 30-40 completed scripts. Due to the show’s advanced filming schedule at the time, Thanksgiving and Christmas were already written.
This ultimately became a problem because the pandemic shut down sports, too. That meant several preemptions were skipped, including a two-week break for the ultimately postponed Olympics.
Days of Our Lives Head Writer Ron Carlivati explained their predicament in an interview with Soap Opera Digest. “Once the Olympics didn’t happen, they pulled up all of those shows, so the result of that would be that our anniversary show would be a few weeks off, Thanksgiving would probably air on November 5th or something, Christmas would air at the beginning of December…” Carlivati said.
Although Carlivati acknowledged that the audience would’ve understood, it was something that just “didn’t sit well” with him. Carlivati thought maybe there was a way to fix it, so he pitched a mini storyline that would be filmed when the show resumed production.
The goal was to create a story that still fit with the ongoing action and get those dates lined up for the right holidays again.
Carlivati feels confident that they pulled it off. “There is a sort of seven- or eight-day incident that happens in Salem that was not there originally,” Carlivati said. He assured Days of Our Lives fans that it doesn’t feel like filler and packs in plenty of excitement.
Carlivati pointed to some unexpected people popping up, so it sounds like some surprise returns will be featured as part of this plan. Overall, “it’s a fun little story that does have some real consequences for the show,” Carlivati promised.
There’s no word on which characters will be featured just yet, but we’ll offer updates as other DOOL news comes in. This certainly sounds like an excellent idea – and it’s great that things like Thanksgiving and Christmas will still come on the right dates after all.
