General Hospital (GH) spoilers tease that the ABC soap will continue to air classics until the cast and crew can get back in the studio. We’re all looking forward to General Hospital’s long-awaited return to production, which is hopefully a step closer now that The Bold and the Beautiful is filming again. While we wait for new episodes, let’s mull over the popular character of Jason Morgan (Steve Burton).
Many of these classics have featured Billy Miller in the role of Jason Morgan – or Jake Doe in some cases. GH later rewrote it so Miller’s Jason was actually Drew Cain, Jason’s memory-mapped twin brother. That made it so Drew could stick around after Burton reprised the role of Jason.
However, seeing Miller as Jason again in these encores has reignited an old debate. Was Miller a good Jason Morgan? Was Miller better as Jason or Drew? There are some strong opinions on this – just like with anything in the soap world! Let’s look at how some fans feel about this tricky Jason situation.
On Twitter, many GH viewers have been reflecting on Miller’s debut as Jason and whether they were open to a new version of the character at the time. People also shared their thoughts on whether Miller successfully put his own spin on Jason.
“I was happy to have ‘Jason’ back, but it wasn’t the same,” one fan admitted. “Recasts are hard…Honestly he just made me miss SB more & more.” “Tried to like him as Jason bc I loved the character,” another fan said about Miller. “Kept waiting for him to act like Jason, it never happened. So I could never truly love him as JM.”
Other General Hospital viewers appreciated Miller’s fresh take and onscreen chemistry with Kelly Monaco (Sam McCall). “As much as I loved Steve I just wanted Jason back…I even loved the chemistry Billy had with Kelly. He wasn’t the OG Jason but he definitely grew on me.”
Of course, some General Hospital fans put the blame on the show for altering how the character was written. “They changed the character on purpose and they were wrong for it,” one GH viewer insisted. There are plenty of people who would argue that Miller’s Jason just never really felt like Jason as a result.
Once Miller took on the role of Drew and didn’t have to fit into that Jason mold, that was a relief for many viewers. The only downside was GH never used Drew to his full potential. Drew should’ve been given the chance to get his memories back and become someone other than a man who used to believe he was Jason.
