General Hospital Spoilers: Cyrus’ Tragic Backstory – Does It Evoke Sympathy For The Evil Druglord?

General Hospital (GH) spoilers tease that Laura Collins (Genie Francis) got a huge surprise this past week when it was revealed that she’s got two half-brothers that she never knew about.

Under regular circumstances, this would be a big reveal, but one of those half-brothers happens to be Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober), whom Laura has some serious animosity toward. Ever since Cyrus has come to Port Charles, it seems that he’s been after Laura and her family in some way.

Well, not only did Cyrus reveal that he and Martin Grey (Michael E. Knight) are siblings to Laura, but Laura got to witness some of Cyrus’ emotional exchanges with his mother Florence Grey (Anne Collings).

As it turned out, Cyrus and his mother have been estranged for years, ever since Cyrus spiraled out of control as a teen and ran over his father with the family car in a fit of rage. It’s something that Florence never got over and never forgave Cyrus for.

Now that Cyrus’ backstory is out there and viewers have seen him interact with Florence and basically beg for her love and respect, one wonders what kind of effect this will have on viewers and their perception of Cyrus.

Up until the scenes with Cyrus and Florence, Cyrus was basically just a one-dimensional villain who seemed to take great pleasure in destroying things for other people. Cyrus destroyed lives with his drug trade, and he seemingly wanted to run down Port Charles completely.

But now, viewers have seen another side of Cyrus, and they’ve learned about what’s driven Cyrus all these years. Cyrus was driven to make something of himself and be someone, all to overcompensate for not being able to have the one thing he’s wanted the most – his mother’s love and acceptance.

Cyrus apparently masks his great pain over being rejected by his mother and taking his father’s life by being ruthless and victorious in all that he does.

So, now will viewers feel some sympathy for Cyrus? The answer is probably yes and no. On the one hand, it seems that Gordon Grey’s death was an accident, and that Cyrus didn’t mean to run down his father with the car.

And for Cyrus’ mom to reject him was probably pretty harsh, especially since the accident seemed to be just that – an accident.

But as Laura rightly pointed out to Cyrus, the real problem is what Cyrus has done in the years following his father’s death.

Cyrus clearly made choices that he shouldn’t have made, and he became someone who traffics in destroying lives and communities, so he’s probably never going to be redeemed in viewers’ eyes. But Cyrus’ backstory does seem to nevertheless evoke some sympathy for what he went through as a troubled teen.

It will be interesting to see where Cyrus’ story goes and whether he ever does have a crisis of conscience as a result of the choices he’s made. If he does, it would make for some interesting drama for sure.

Do you think that Cyrus’s backstory makes him a more sympathetic character? Stay tuned to the ABC soap and remember that CDL is here for you with all the General Hospital spoilers, news, and daily episode recaps.
