General Hospital (GH) spoilers reveal that some fans and sites have been spreading the false idea that Emme Rylan (Lulu Spencer) might make a comeback as Abby Newman on The Young and the Restless. There’s been unsubstantiated talk about Rylan replacing Melissa Ordway in the role.
However, there’s nothing to indicate Y&R intends to recast Abby by letting Rylan reclaim the part. Rylan is currently airing as Lulu Spencer on General Hospital, but her final airdate is rapidly approaching.
Once the news of Rylan’s GH exit broke, that led some viewers to wonder if Rylan might make her way back to The Young and the Restless.
Rylan played Abby from 2010-2013 before Ordway took over, but Ordway’s been in the role far longer at this point. Ordway has carved a spot out as her own version of Abby and there’s really no need to change.
Swapping in Rylan wouldn’t make a huge difference to the show, so it’d be jarring and disruptive for no reason. Not to mention the switch would outrage plenty of fans and probably most of the cast as well.
Even if some fans would be happy to have Rylan back, the risks outweigh the benefits here. Ordway is doing a perfectly fine job and is in the middle of a big storyline with her main costar, Donny Boaz (Chance Chancellor on Y&R).
Y&R is really trying to sell Chance and Abby as their “it” couple right now, so why would they make trouble for themselves by recasting Abby?
Some fans have tried to act like this could turn into another Gina Tognoni (ex-Phyllis Summers on Y&R) situation – where a solid actress is cut for a past performer. However, that was a completely different scenario.
The Young and the Restless actively sought Michelle Stafford (ex-Nina Reeves) out and convinced her to leave General Hospital to return as Phyllis.
In Rylan’s case, she made it clear on Instagram that it was NOT her choice to leave GH. Rylan has also revealed that she wants to get out of Los Angeles for a while. Rylan is trying to make the best of her firing by using this as a road trip opportunity for her family.
In other words, Rylan doesn’t plan to work on soaps or anywhere else for the time being. She’s just going to take a breather and chill with the fam on the road!
Once Rylan returns home, it’s still doubtful that she’ll be back on Y&R as Abby. Ordway seems to have a lot of support behind the scenes, so we just don’t see The Young and the Restless pushing for a recast.
Of course, many viewers are hopeful that Rylan might return to General Hospital one day – and you never know! We’ll keep you posted as other GH updates emerge.
