General Hospital (GH) spoilers reveal that the custody battle left off in a rather awkward place due to the COVID-19 aka coronavirus shutdown. Due to the pandemic, GH was forced to suspend production. That meant leaving fans hanging right in the middle of some juicy courtroom drama. Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) has just taken the stand and has vowed to tell the whole truth.
It’ll take some time before a winner can be declared in this custody battle. GH fans won’t get firm answers until the cast and crew can get back to filming again. While we wait, there’s a crucial topic to ponder. It’s one that Nina herself has had to think about, so viewers should think about it, too.
Does Nelle deserve custody rights? Should Nelle play a role in raising Wiley Quartermaine-Corinthos (Erik and Theo Olson)? Let’s consider some arguments that have been presented on the show and try to see how they really hold up.
When Nelle pushed Brad Cooper (Parry Shen) to switch babies with her that fateful night, she argued that her son would have a better life with Brad and Lucas Jones (Ryan Carnes). Nelle mostly didn’t want Michael and Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) to win, but she was right on some level.
As Michael pointed out when Willow Corinthos (Katelyn MacMullen) became his wife, she married into two very complicated families. That’s particularly true when it comes to the Corinthos side of things. Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) is a mob boss. His family has just come off lockdown because of Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober), Sonny’s latest deadly threat.
It wasn’t long ago that Michael tried to break up with Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson) to protect her. Michael wanted to push Sasha away from his family out of love – because being part of the Corinthos family has always been dangerous and is always going to be dangerous.
Jasper “Jax” Jacks (Ingo Rademacher) wanted Nina that if she was wrong about Nelle, Nina would have to live with that. Jax suggested that Nelle could raise Wiley to be vindictive like her. However, Carly locked Wiley’s mom on the roof and forged her signature. Grandma Carly didn’t care if Nelle froze to death up there or not.
In fact, Carly has delivered death threats to Nelle on multiple occasions. There have been other conversations within the Corinthos clan about eliminating Nelle if it comes to that. So what will that teach Wiley? If you can’t solve a problem, just murder your enemy?
Nelle tried to kill Michael, but his family has alluded to plotting to kill her, too. Michael may be good and kind, but he’s admitted he’s part of a risky world – one that nearly cost him his life in that shootout on the pier. Even Sonny’s stepdaughter, Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy), could’ve been killed that day.
Since Michael’s never going to just walk away from his family, it seems like a more level playing field than has been presented in court. Even Willow was duped as part of a cult for a while. Nelle saw through Shiloh Archer (Coby Ryan McLaughlin) from the get-go and used him to her advantage. What’s better: being the sucker or manipulating the manipulator?
Michael fell for Nelle’s tricks plenty of times, so maybe Wiley could use a mom like Nelle to teach him not to be so gullible. Wiley’s going to need some street smarts growing up in a mob family! He’s not going to get that from Willow and Michael.
The truth is Lucas was the best possible parent for Wiley, but we have to look at the situation as it stands now. Nelle doesn’t pose any more of a threat to Wiley than Michael’s mobster bunch. She’s a lot of things, but she doesn’t seem like a child abuser. Nelle’s vision board showed us that Nelle really wants to dote on Wiley.
Although Nelle’s not going to win any awards for mother of the year, she’s no more vindictive than those closest to Michael. It seems fair for Nelle to get custody rights – and she probably will score joint custody if Nina spots that half-heart pendant necklace and decides to support her bio daughter.
