British royals news reveals some developments in Meghan Markle’s lawsuit against The Mail on Sunday. Meghan is engaged in a legal dispute against the newspaper’s parent company, Associated Newspapers. She is suing for breach of privacy and copyright infringement after the paper published excerpts from a handwritten letter she wrote to her father, Thomas Markle.
Portions of Meghan’s letter were published in the paper with the following headline: “Revealed: The Letter Showing True Tragedy Of Meghan’s Rift With A Father She Says Has Broken Her Heart Into A Million Pieces.” Meghan wrote the letter after Thomas Markle did not attend his daughter’s wedding to Prince Harry.
Back in early May, Meghan Markle suffered an unfavorable preliminary ruling in her lawsuit when the judge in the case dismissed certain parts of her case. Meghan had said that the publisher acted dishonestly, deliberately dug up issues, and that it had an agenda of publishing intrusive or offensive stories about her.
Well, now Meghan’s lawyers have submitted an amended reply to the court. The Times reports that in the reply, Meghan’s lawyers have removed a claim that that the defendant had “harassed and humiliated” her father, and that the organization “deliberately manipulated and exploited a vulnerable and fragile individual.”
Yet still the legal battle rages on and is far from over. Meghan’s consultants said after the ruling against her back in May that the core elements of the case have not changed and will continue to move forward. The consultants have stated that “the Duchess’s rights were violated; the legal boundaries around privacy were crossed.”
All these rulings and maneuverings are in anticipation of a trial that is scheduled to go forward in late 2020 or early 2021. At that time, Meghan Markle and her father Thomas Markle will necessarily have to appear, each testifying for the opposite side.
There will likely be further rulings as the case moves forward, and this process is not at all unusual.
