Where are they now? Alicia started her weight loss journey one year ago. She was first given the task of losing fifty pounds in one month and she only lost eighteen. She was also suffering difficulties with her boyfriend, Tim. Tim had hoped this experience and it seems to have driven them future apart because now Alicia was focused on her health. Alicia had moved to Houston as was recommended by Dr. Now. She needed to be closer to the hospital and again this put a strain on her relationship with Tim. The two of them had a hard time dealing with the separation. Tim doesn’t like it if he can’t control a situation and he couldn’t control her weight loss.
Alicia pursued it in spite of Tim. She began dieting. She worked out and she even said that Tim has allowed her to join a gym. Alicia likes going to the gym. She likes to have that alone time to herself. Alicia’s weight loss has stalled some since she reached her one year anniversary in losing weight. She wasn’t losing as many pounds as she used to per month and so Dr. Now had talked to her about it. He wanted to know what changed. Alicia told him not much has changed. She mostly stays at home with Tim and she only leaves the house the few days she goes to the gym. She also wasn’t being open about her emotional state.
Alicia was being very vague with the doctor. He wanted to know why her mindset and she wasn’t really giving him an answer. The vaguer she was, the more concerned Dr. Now became. He suspected her boyfriend was being emotionally abusive. The doctor has seen incidents in which the significant others come to resent the weight loss because they feel like the person losing weight now no longer has a reason to stay with them and so he was concerned this was happening with Alicia and Tim. Tim was always around. Alicia couldn’t really talk about her emotional state with him there and so Dr. Now tried to help in whatever way he could.
He gave Alicia homework. He wanted her to speak to a psychologist who he said would help Alicia with her weight loss goals and this other doctor could also help her to take emotional control of her life. Dr. Now knew Dr. Matthew Paradise would help Alicia. Alicia saw this other doctor. She developed some goals for herself. She wanted to go back to school and become a kindergarten teacher. She was also dealt with her emotional state. Alicia had to talk to her mom and she went over her feelings about never being enough when she was a child. She also said Tim helped her. Tim encouraged her to change what doesn’t fit and yet it wasn’t enough encouragement for her to lose weight.
Several months went past. Alicia went back to Dr. Now and she had missed her goal weight. She only lost twenty-something pounds since she last saw him. She was supposed to be losing a good fifty at that time and so she fell short of her goal. She also didn’t seem to be thinking of her goal to become a teacher. Dr. Now asked her about goals and all she said is that she wanted to lose weight. She even added how she wanted to travel one day. Alicia needed to create concrete plans and she needed to do it alone. She couldn’t keep relying on Tim. Not when their relationship continuing to be unhealthy.
Alicia was told she needed to increase her weight loss or else she risked gaining weight. She should have been working twice as hard to lose weight and instead she went to a celebratory night out with Tim because he wanted to congratulate her on how much weight she’s already lost. Tim and Alicia’s relationship had also been mentioned in therapy. Her doctor wants to reconsider each relationship she has and what she’s getting from it. Alicia believes her doctor is being unfair to Tim. She said there have been times when she was frustrated with Tim and he has always supported her. Alicia believes Tim loves her. She refuses to see how bad for her he is.
Tim has encouraged her to break the rules. He told her it’s okay if she wants to snack here or there. He also told her she shouldn’t be so hard on herself and its because of that attitude that Alicia only came to lose two pounds since her last visit. She basically lost nothing. Dr. Now called it nothing and he asked how therapy is going and it’s not really going anywhere. Alicia ignores what Dr. Paradise has said because she doesn’t like what the doctor has said about Tim. She hasn’t seen the doctor as much as she should and Dr. Now has finally had it with Tim. Tim keeps talking to her. Tim tried to do that again when they were in Dr. Now’s office and the doctor called him out on it.
Dr. Now has had enough of Tim. He called Tim out for being a manipulator. He accused of him enabling Alicia to fail and he went as far as to call their relationship emotionally abusive. Dr. Now told Alicia that she needed to take charge of her life because if she didn’t lose the fifty pounds by their next visit – he wouldn’t be able to help her. Alicia should have taken what said under consideration. Especially the part about Tim. Tim was a manipulator and he was trying to prevent her weight loss. He wasn’t good for her and she was the only one that couldn’t see it. Alicia became so upset with what Dr. Now said that she considered dropping out of the program.
Alicia was seemingly choosing Tim over her weight loss. If she left the program, there would be no turning back for her, and she would be just like Pauline. Pauline started her weight loss journey three years ago. She was almost seven hundred pounds and she ended up losing a significant amount of weight. She lost nearly four hundred pounds. She was so doing well. She was progressing right until her skin removal surgery. Her pain tolerance is really low and she didn’t take pain killers after surgery nor she did do everything she was supposed to with her physical therapist. Pauline returned to food. She gained weight and Dr. Now had taken her to the task.
Pauline constantly complained about how hard Dr. Now was on her. He didn’t accept her excuses and he would tell her when he was disappointed. Dr. Now was very truthful with Pauline. She didn’t like that and so she dropped out of the program. She thought she could do the work on her own, but she couldn’t. Her weight stalled and the excess skin on her legs was still weighing her down. Pauline had needed Dr. Now. She later convinced him to see her and he was willing to take her on again if she lost the necessary weight by their next appointment. Pauline was still around three hundred pounds. She just needed to prove that she could lose weight and then she would be approved for further skin removal.
It’s going on four years since Pauline started her journey. She now wants to finish it with her skin removal and so this time she did what she was supposed to do. She worked out. She dieted. She even got out of the seven hundred pound mindset. Pauline stopped telling herself what she couldn’t do and she just did it. She later lost forty-seven pounds. It was a couple of pounds off of her weight goal and luckily Dr. Now didn’t hold that against her. He agreed to the skin removal surgery. He’s going to remove the mass from her legs and this free her like never before. Pauline had gotten her life back on track.
Alicia wasn’t where she was supposed to be. She was angry with Dr. Now for a while. She didn’t forgive him right away because of what he said about Tim. Tim is still the most important person in her life and she’s only now just seeing how problematic their relationship is. Alicia spends most of her time home alone. She waits for Tim to return from work and only then was she allowed a life. Alicia didn’t see how wrong that was until she finally mentioned going back to college. Alicia does want to go back. She wants to get her degree and become a teacher. She thought Tim would be supportive. He wasn’t and he told her it was too soon.
Too soon for what? Alicia could have dropped it like she normally would have. Except she didn’t want to this time. She really wanted to go to school. she went back to Tim and this time she didn’t take no for an answer. Alicia told him what she was going to be doing. Tim was forced to accept it and so Alicia was finally doing what was right for her. She even realized her mistake in walking away from Dr. Now. She went back to his office. She went to see him alone and she found out she lost seventy pounds in four months. She should have lost more than that. It wasn’t really a victory and yet that’s how she took it.
Alicia and Tim had also moved back to Illinois. They had no plans on moving back to Houston and so now Alicia will have to travel to see Dr. Now. Which was okay. She wanted to stay in his program. She wanted to lose enough weight to qualify for skin removal surgery and so she wanted to be like Pauline. Pauline had the mass removed from her leg. She dealt with the pain much easier now than she did before and so she didn’t gain weight. She stayed losing it. She had lost so much that she actually went in for her third skin removal. Pauline’s latest surgery shed seven pounds off her and so she’s now below two hundred pounds.
Alicia was also doing better. She started school and her newfound independence was helping her to lose weight. She met her task at her next appointment. She was doing better and Dr. Now was proud of her. He was even proud of the dynamic shift in her relationship with Tim. Tim didn’t get to control every aspect of her life now and Alicia got to pursue her actual goals.
THE END!
