The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) seems to be entering territory that will be very difficult to come back from. As Y&R viewers will remember, Adam tried to kill his dad Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) months ago when he tampered with Victor’s medication.
Adam basically doubled Victor’s dosage, causing Victor terrible distress and putting him in deadly danger.
Now Adam is planning something even worse, it seems. In recent episodes, Adam has been seen with schematics of Newman Tower and what appears to be an explosive device that he plans to detonate while Victor is in the CEO office.
The good news here is that Adam’s plan to do bodily harm to Victor and the rest of his family is going to be thwarted, but there’s the very real chance that Adam’s plot to harm Victor is going to be discovered.
It certainly seems to us like Adam is going down a road that is going to be hard to come back from. It’s a little confusing, because when Adam nearly killed Victor with his meds, he seemed to be genuinely upset by his actions afterwards.
And yet Adam has gone ahead and come up with a bigger, more intense murder plot. So, what’s going on here?
Well, we suspect that Adam could be truly suffering from something worse than just a desire for revenge and hatred of the Newman family. Might Adam be seriously mentally ill?
After all, Adam has been hallucinating recently, with visions of Young Adam (Dane West) talking to him about what he’s planned to do to Newman Tower. This could be a sign of a break from reality.
And if TPTB are going to go in the direction of Adam having a mental illness, then that would certainly be a way for the character to get redeemed in the end.
We could even see a situation in which Adam gets forcibly committed to a mental health facility against his will, perhaps at his family’s request. And after some intense psychiatric treatment, Adam could become redeemed.
Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) could even play a key role in Adam’s treatment, although we suspect that Adam would need the help of psychiatrists and some serious medication to get back on track – something that Sharon as a counselor really can’t provide.
It seems that Adam needs treatment to deal with his childhood trauma, abandonment issues, and murderous tendencies, and that could take a while to treat.
We’ll see what happens going forward, but there certainly are plenty of signs that Adam could eventually be diagnosed with a severe mental illness, which could soften some of his family members to his plight.
Certainly, Victor would be sympathetic to Adam having a mental illness, as would Sharon, but others like Victoria Newman (Amelie Heinle) and Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) might suspect that Adam is faking.
At any rate, a mental illness storyline is certainly one way that things could go for Adam’s character. Do you think it will turn out that Adam is suffering from a severe mental illness?
