The Young and the Restless spoilers has some sad news to pass on about a beloved Y&R star from years past. Actress Marguerite Ray, who portrayed Mamie Johnson on the CBS soap, has passed away at the age of 89. Marguerite portrayed Mamie from 1980-1990.
According to The East Bay Times, Marguerite passed away on November 18, 2020, in Los Angeles. Marguerite was well-known for her role of Mamie Johnson on Y&R, but she also appeared in other popular series, including Sanford and Son, Sanford, and Dynasty.
On Sanford, Marguerite portrayed Evelyn Lewis, the girlfriend of Redd Foxx’s character.
Marguerite was born in New Orleans in 1931 and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1948. Marguerite was a recreation and entertainment director with the US Special Services in Germany between 1954-1959, and in 1969, she moved to Los Angeles, eventually bursting onto the television scene with roles in popular series such as The Bill Cosby Show, The Odd Couple, and Bewitched.
According to the obituary, Marguerite “enjoyed traveling, patronizing the visual and performance arts, and serving on boards of several advocacy groups, notably Kwanza Foundation, Janesse Center, and The Actors Fund. Her many experiences afforded her a circle of close friends.”
Long-time viewers of Y&R will remember Marguerite’s character Mamie Johnson, who was portrayed in later years by Veronica Redd. Mamie was the Abbott family’s housekeeper for years, and she was an important part of the Abbott family.
Mamie was occasionally mentioned by Dina Mergeron (Marla Adams) as Dina was suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease in recent episodes.
Mamie’s two nieces were Olivia Barber (Tonya Lee) and Drucilla Barber (Victoria Rowell), who each became integral parts of Y&R in their own rights.
After Mamie left Genoa City in 1995, she was frequently mentioned on the show, returning in 1999 and remaining until 2004, when the character left Genoa City to travel the world.
