The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that there are two characters who could really use a career shakeup. As Y&R fans await new episodes, now’s the perfect time to think about what’s ahead in Genoa City. Let’s consider an interesting story idea and the excitement it might bring. Of course Y&R did offer a special 2-part GC Buzz series recently but we’re talking about making it part of the show again.
First, we’ve got Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes). The Young and the Restless writers have made pretty some bizarre choices involving Mariah’s career. After Mariah’s far-too-brief stalker storyline ended, Mariah decided to get out of the TV hosting business.
As luck would have it, Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) had another job waiting for Mariah. She was given the chance to run Power Communications, which led to a battle with Theo Vanderway (Tyler Johnson) that went nowhere at all.
Furthermore, the extent of Mariah’s job was making phone calls at Society. Y&R later had Power Communications fold, so the whole thing was a bust. To make matters worse, Devon didn’t even put in a good word for Mariah at Chancellor Communications.
Why hasn’t Devon reached out to Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) – who’s running Chancellor’s media division with Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) – and praised Mariah’s talents? Geez, Devon. Hook a girl up!
However, there are already so many people involved in that storyline. Billy, Lily, Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan), Traci Abbott (Beth Maitland), soon-to-be-hired Theo… Mariah could easily get involved as well, but why overcrowd Chancellor?
There’s a better option to consider – and it involves putting Mariah at odds with a familiar rival. Let’s say Devon’s new GC Buzz host leaves him in a tight spot. Perhaps Ms. Thang could land some gig on a major news network and ditch Devon for more money and fame.
Devon might need a fill-in host immediately, and Mariah would be the first person he’d turn to. Mariah knows how to do the job and was well-liked by GC Buzz viewers. She’s also a friend who’s unemployed, so there’d be plenty of reasons for Mariah to do this favor for Devon.
Mariah might make it clear that she’s only agreeing to this temporarily, but she wouldn’t want to leave Devon in a bind. That’s when Summer Newman (Hunter King) could come on as a guest to dish about Jabot products.
Naturally, Mariah and Summer would do what they do best. They would inevitably clash on the air and send the ratings skyrocketing. It’d give fans a taste of what always made GC Buzz work: the showdowns between Mariah and Hilary Hamilton (Mishael Morgan).
Devon could see the potential to recreate that sparring magic with Mariah and Summer. He could offer these foes big bucks to be his permanent cohosts. Part of Devon might be sad to replicate what Mariah had with Hilary, but business is business. It’s all about the bottom line – and this would be ratings gold.
Summer and Mariah are both quite content in their relationships these days. Now that Mariah’s reunited with Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks) following the cheating fiasco, they’re on solid ground again. Likewise, Summer’s back with Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) and things are going just fine.
By revving up Summer and Mariah’s feud like this, it would provide some good drama. Mariah would vent to Tessa, and Summer would complain to Kyle. It’s easy to imagine Kyle and Tessa jumping in to help calm down their partners. It’d keep these four key players involved in a story together, and they’re all going to need one after Y&R resumes production.
Summer’s job at Jabot is rather blah, and she could stand to interact with more characters. This story route would certainly offer the opportunity to do that. As for Mariah, her stalker’s long gone and she needs an income. Mariah might do anything for the right price – even work with her nemesis!
