The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway) and Chance Chancellor’s (Justin Gaston) future is bright, but they’ll have to overcome some struggles along the way.
So many of Chance and Abby’s conversations involve their desire for a family. Since there’s been constant talk about babies, it’s just tough to imagine Y&R giving them a child without any problems.
It’s possible Abby will battle some fertility issues related to her previous miscarriage. It’s also possible Abby will face yet another miscarriage – perhaps leading to news that it’s unlikely she’ll be able to carry a baby to term.
Regardless, this might be a situation where Chance and Abby have to explore other paths to starting a family. Finding a surrogate to help them might be what The Young and the Restless writers have in mind.
If so, it’d be a more interesting story if someone on canvas agreed to do it instead of some random woman. We can think of one potential surrogate candidate based on the hints Y&R’s offered so far.
Could Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) volunteer to help Abby achieve her motherhood dream?
Let’s consider some clues that would back that up. For starters, The Young and the Restless has been highlighting Abby and Mariah’s friendship lately. There’s been some criticism from fans about that, but it’s not honestly that out of the blue.
Abby has steadily grown closer to Mariah as well as Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks) over the past couple years. She gave Tessa a job when no one else would and even offered to let her perform at Society before Tessa got her latest big break.
Abby was also established as part of a friendship squad with Mariah, Tessa and Lola Rosales (Sasha Calle) before the “Kola” wedding.
Next, Abby let Mariah and Tessa have their 2019 anniversary bash at Society and happily helped celebrate the couple’s special night. Abby even went out dancing at the club with Mariah while Tessa was on tour earlier this year.
There have been plenty of other parties and interactions where Mariah and Abby were quite friendly.
This Abby and Mariah friendship really isn’t all that instant, but Y&R’s definitely kicking things up a notch – and there may be a good reason why. When Abby was scared about starting a family with Chance, it was Mariah who encouraged Abby to push past her fears and just go for it.
Later, Abby made Mariah her maid of honor after mentioning how Mariah had calmed her fears about those family plans. It’s been a consistent theme as Mariah and Abby have grown even closer over the last few months.
It’s reasonable to think that trend might continue if Abby’s worst fears come true and she can’t start a family after all.
Mariah is a “fixer” at her core. She always wants to fix the problems of the people she cares about. Mariah is almost motherly to people like Faith Newman (Alyvia Alyn Lind) and others in her life that she sees struggling.
There’s a lot of Sharon Newman’s (Sharon Case) nature in Mariah – at least that’s become the case since Mariah broke free from her cult mentality.
If it turns out Abby can’t have a baby, will Mariah step up as a surrogate? It’s a possibility to mull over, especially when you look at another hint from Y&R Head Writer and Co-Executive Producer Josh Griffith.
In an SOD preview earlier this year, here’s what Griffith had to say about Mariah and Tessa: “Mariah will make a surprising choice as we move into winter that will have a huge impact on this couple’s future.” Could that surprising choice involve serving as Abby’s surrogate?
That could certainly have an impact on what’s ahead for Tessa and Mariah. Despite not being into the idea of motherhood for herself in the past, Mariah might have a change of heart after this potential surrogacy. It could open the door to Tessa and Mariah starting a family of their own one day.
