The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic) has had a lot to deal with lately. As Y&R viewers know, Nate and Elena Dawson (Brytni Sarpy) slept together one fateful evening at the New Hope Clinic, and ever since then things have really been difficult for them both.
Of course, Elena is dealing with a terrible breakup with Devon Hamilton (Bryton James), but really Nate got the worst of it, since Devon totally attacked Nate after he learned about the affair.
It seemed that Devon intended to just deck Nate, but Nate ended up being knocked over such that he cut his hand severely when the glass he was holding broke in the scuffle.
This is a huge problem, since (a) the cut was deep, and (b) Nate’s a surgeon. Now Nate is saying that he doesn’t know if he’ll ever be able to have a steady hand for surgery ever again.
Of course, Nate can still be a physician in some capacity, which is the good news. But he apparently won’t be able to be a practicing surgeon, and that’s going to impact the rest of Nate’s life and his livelihood.
So far, Nate has basically been wallowing in self-pity and grief, which is completely understandable given what he’s going through – he’s lost not only his livelihood, but his relationship with his cousin, too.
So, how long before someone suggests to Nate that he should pursue legal action against Devon for his injuries? It’s actually somewhat amazing that Devon wasn’t criminally charged with aggravated assault for his attack on Nate, which occurred in a public place and resulted in a severe injury.
But what about civil litigation? What if Nate decides to sue Devon for the money he would have made throughout his working lifetime as a surgeon?
That would certainly be a contentious situation, if Nate dragged Devon to court and sued him for a portion of his $2 billion fortune. Nate could probably easily get by with asking for a couple hundred million dollars in actual and punitive damages, since his career as a surgeon has been ruined by Devon’s temper.
Of course, that would mean some very public and upsetting testimony about what precipitated Devon’s attack on Nate at the Grand Phoenix, which would mean that Elena and Nate would have to detail their affair on public record.
It could get messy, but Nate might be fed up enough with Devon’s cavalier attitude to go forward with such a lawsuit, especially if Devon continues to show no remorse for what he did.
We’ll see what happens, but we’d say that Nate would have a pretty good case against Devon. It would seem that Devon’s only recourse would be to argue that he didn’t intend to injure Nate so severely, which a jury might not buy.
