The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers review for Friday, October 16, reveals that Dina Mergeron’s (Marla Adams) imminent death is at the center of the drama.
At Crimson Lights, Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway) feels guilty for leaving Dina to get coffee, but Traci Abbott (Beth Maitland) insists it was a rough night. Abby needed a break since she didn’t get much sleep.
Although Abby dozed off next to Dina, she awoke to the sound of her grandmother gasping for air. Dina’s on palliative care with no interventions, but Abby couldn’t just leave her like that.
Traci insists that Abby did the right thing by calling Dina’s medical team and getting her oxygen so she could go back to sleep.
Abby feels like Dina has taken a turn for the worse, so Traci admits she’s right. She thinks Dina’s fading fast and notes that they have to prepare for the inevitable.
At home, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) dreams about a young, pregnant Dina (Cathy Marks) – and a young John Abbott (Jonathan Stoddard), who has the “teardrop of love” emerald necklace.
At the park, Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) runs into Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davison), who feels she owes him a big “thank you.” Ashley is grateful that Victor helped Jack with “teardrop of love” necklace info.
Victor is sorry about Dina and guesses that Jack needs a goal, which leads Ashley to worry about Victor’s own goal.
Ashley warns that getting revenge on Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) won’t even begin to resolve the bigger issues that article brought up, but Victor doesn’t want to talk about that.
Since Ashley has to go sit with Dina, she admits her mother isn’t doing well. Victor decides he’ll go back to the house with Ashley so he can say goodbye to Dina.
Back at the coffeehouse, Traci assures Abby that Dina won’t be alone when the time comes. She has to believe that Dina felt some trace of family connection when Abby was there for her last night.
Abby’s still upset, but Traci thinks they have to get peace from the full, amazing life that Dina lived.
Talk turns to Chance Chancellor (Donny Boaz) and how Abby would’ve liked to introduce him to Dina. Abby reflects on Dina as a mother and hopes she’ll embrace better qualities in that department.
Traci has no doubt that Abby will be a good mom if and when she decides to have children.
“What if I told you that decision’s already been made?” Abby asks on Friday’s Y&R episode. Traci gets flustered and starts to ask if Abby’s pregnant, but Abby confirms she isn’t.
However, Abby does admit she’s been talking about having a baby with Chance.
Although Abby knows it isn’t likely, she wishes Dina could hold on long enough to meet her first great-grandchild. Traci assures Abby that when the time comes, she’ll be there to share stories – ones that don’t need embellishing since Dina lived such a wild life.
At home again, Jack dreams of Dina dancing with John when she was younger. Suddenly, young Dina realizes her necklace is gone and turns to Jack to ask why he took it away. “I didn’t take it! I swear it was stolen!” Jack insists.
Older Dina is then standing in front of Jack – urging him to find the necklace and bring it home. Nearby in a chair, Jack awakens and goes to check on Dina.
Afterward on Friday’s Young and the Restless episode, Jack calls Lauren Baldwin (Tracey E. Bregman) and gets the news that she found the necklace in the shipment that came in. As Victor and Ashley arrive, Jack takes off to meet Lauren at Jabot.
While Lauren waits at the office with Michael Baldwin (Christian LeBlanc), she gushes over Michael’s decision to let his hair go gray. Michael starts talking about superstitions next. “There are so many legends around that thing.
Depending on what you read, if you are the lover or the love-ee, possessing the teardrop is either a blessing or a curse,” Michael admits.
Michael hopes the necklace is currently in one of its benign, non-cursed phases. “Oh, honey. No necklace is going to change our love,” Lauren promises as slightly ominous-sounding music plays.
Lauren notes that they’ve been through so much and are more in love than ever. Michael praises Lauren for the gift she’s helping Jack give his dying mother.
Once Victor visits Dina and says some lovely words off screen, Ashley opens up to Victor and fears she might get Alzheimer’s someday. Victor downplays that possibility before the conversation shifts to his retirement, then Adam Newman (Mark Grossman).
Ashley points out that Adam tampered with Victor’s meds and nearly killed him. Adam’s done horrible things, so Ashley wants to know what Victor’s plans are where Adam is concerned.
Victor argues that he didn’t take it as a serious attempt on his life, but Ashley insists Victor was already incredibly ill. It was at the very least dangerous.
Ashley thinks Adam’s done horrific things to people Victor loves and wonders if he’s any closer to washing his hands of Adam. Victor asks what would happen if Abby seemed to be a lost cause.
Would Ashley just turn her back on her daughter? Ashley says of course not, but she adds that Abby isn’t Adam. Victor eventually relates this to Ashley not being able to turn her back on Dina in the end.
Back at Jabot, Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) shows up and finds Lauren with Michael. They congratulate Kyle on his elopement, so he’s forced to admit things didn’t go as planned.
Kyle’s saved from more questions when Jack appears and opens the necklace box. Jack’s hoping it might spark a reaction – even just a moment of clarity from Dina.
After Jack tries to avoid bringing up Summer Newman’s (Hunter King) name, Kyle insists it’s OK. He ends up filling Michael and Lauren in on how Summer bailed on him before the ceremony. What Kyle wants to focus on now is Dina and this teardrop of love necklace.
Lauren assures Jack that he can keep the necklace as long as he needs. Jack wants everyone together for the big reveal. Over with Traci and Abby, they get texts about the necklace discovery. Just as Victor’s about to leave the Abbott mansion, Ashley gets a text and updates Victor, too.
The Abbotts all gather in the living room later, so Jack makes a speech and acknowledges that Dina doesn’t have much time left. Abby was hoping Dina would rally somehow, but Ashley’s never seen Dina so weak and frail.
Jack shows off the necklace and mentions that it’s from the home movie when Dina brought Jack home from the hospital.
After Jack explains his recent dream to Abby, she suggests maybe Dina came to him in a dream because that’s the only way she could. Traci talks to Ashley about how it was such a shock when Dina abandoned them, so it’s a bit easier knowing in advance that Dina’s leaving this time.
Ashley thinks maybe it’s harder because they’re saying goodbye forever.
Jack asks if Kyle’s hoping to hear from Summer, so he admits part of him expects her to tell him she made a huge mistake – though he’s starting to lose faith. Jack doesn’t think Kyle should give up hope.
He’s got a lot of regrets and not finding the right woman to love is one of the biggest. If Kyle can fix things with Summer, he should according to Jack.
Abby calls Chance and tells him not to wait up. She thanks Chance for being so supportive during her family’s crisis. Back with Traci, she’s so proud of Jack for what he’s done for Dina and thinks John would be, too.
Dina appears in the doorway out of her room, so they get her settled in a chair and Jack shows her the necklace.
After Dina gasps, she takes the emerald in her hands shakily, kisses it and cries with joy. “Thank you,” Dina says to Jack. Dina turns to the group and urges them to listen.
She admits she ran away from her life, but she was with them always – and she always will be…forever. Dina doesn’t want them to make the same mistakes she made.
Traci is deeply moved as Dina assures her that she’ll never be forgotten. Dina also tells Ashley she’s so sorry – and Ashley knows what for. “You know who you are…an Abbott,” Dina declares.
No one can take that away from Ashley. Dina tells Jackie this is his family now and gets him to promise he’ll keep everyone safe.
After they all assure Dina of their love, she insists she loves them, too. Dina ultimately dies in her chair, still clutching the teardrop of love. We see Dina step out the front door into bright light.
John calls out to Dina and leaves her smiling. “Goodbye, Mother,” Jack says to Dina’s body in the living room.
The Young and the Restless spoilers say Dina’s death will bring some difficult moments for her family next week, so stay tuned to Y&R. CDL will have lots of other great Young and the Restless spoilers, updates and news to read up on, so pop back in soon.
